I am starting this thread to share and discuss aviation news in Algeria, mainly the two Algerian companies : Air Algerie and Tassili Airlines

-Air Algerie will open two new African destination beginning of December 2018 : LBV & DLA (3 weekly each)-
-Air Algerie will unlink BKO and ABJ. BKO. BKO will be served 4 times a week, ABJ 3 times a week
-Tassili airlines will receive 3 new 737-800 NG before end of 2018. New domestic and international routes are expected

In 2018-2019 winter season, AH will increase ORN-IST from 2 to 3 weekly flights (237)

In winter season, AH will have 20 flights per week between Algeria and IST (12 ALG-IST, 3 ORN-IST, 3 CZL-IST, 2 AAE-IST). TK 35 flights per week (3 daily ALG-IST, 1 daily ORN-IST and 1 daily CZL-IST)

AH and TK are code sharing flights between the two countries including summer flights between Algiers and Antalya

Regarding Algerian aviation I've always wondered with the growth of the Algerian economy if either AH or BA would ever consider a LGW to ORN route as it was previously flown by BCAL in the eighties and it would be an additional entry point into the country from the UK other than Algiers.

This is interesting. First time I hear about it (from a quick scan, no press release from CRL authorities, and nothing in Belgian media).

This summer, CRL offers the following to Algeria, all on TUI Fly Belgium:

ALG: 2x weekly
BJA: 1x weekly
CZL: 1x weekly (combined with BJA in October)
ORN: 2x weekly
TLM: 1x weekly (combined with ORN in October)

From what I gather, the flights are pretty full (especially during the peak summer season) with fares going up steeply in July/August.
From my observations at CRL, the VAST majority of customers on those flights come from the Algerian diaspora in Belgium and northern France.

So, Air Algerie will be competing with TUI Fly Belgium on the ALG route. I seem to notice that AH suffers from a negative image in the diaspora (at least in Belgium), but then again, a bit of competition is always welcome (as is a new tail in CRL...). As a CRL local who needs to fly to Algeria from time to time (granted, not so often), I welcome the addition, if for no other reason than having a less "boring" option.

Yes, any new competition is welcomed. I guess AH wants to open CRL rather than expanding BRU or LIL (ZI withdrew from it), because of lower taxes

Any update on AH's fleet development plans; I would have thought that they'd be an ideal candidate for the 737 Max - probably 787 as well (although politics might dictate an Airbus order into its fleet mix)?

According to Algerian media, AH is planning to acquire 35 new aircraft between 2020 and 2025. The decision is awaited in December or beginning of 2019

For long haul, the 788/789 will be logical choice as current AH fleet (8 A332, 3 767-300) is using exclusively GE engines. A330neo and A350 are not proposed with GE engines

737 Max (737-8/737-9) will also be the logical choice as AH has currently 32 737-600/737-700C/737-800

ATR72-600 will be a logical choice to replace older ATR 72-500

E175/190/195-E2 will be a good add in AH fleet to fill the gap between ATR and 737 and replace 737-600

Air Algerie has transported 6.5 Million passengers in 2008, + 4% compared to 2017, this is a new record for the company

in 2017, Air Algerie carried 6.25 Million Pax and was the 5th company in Africa. I don't know what is the situation of SAA in 2018 but probably AH has carried more pax than SAA and finished the year at the 4th position behind ET, MS and AT

When you hear the political vitriol on both sides of that flight it's a bit surprising to be honest.

Considering these figures, it show that ALG-PAR routes (ORY+CDG) represents roughly 10% of the entire number of pax of whole Algeria, that's a huge dependancy ratio just for 1 city

ALG-PAR is up to 22 flights per day in summer 2017 : 9 AH, 6 ZI, 5 AF, 1 SF, 1 5O + 4 to 5 extra flights (2 AH, 2 ZI, 1 5O) per day during end of august / beginning of September

I don't understand why Algeria does not allow visa free access for EU passport holders like Morocco or Tunis do. That would increase those numbers.

Looking at the first photo it looks as if there is an A380 capable gate at the end of the pier with the airbridge arrangement being on two levels.

Last flew out of ALG in December, looked exactly like this. No word (official or otherwise) that I can find suggesting a date to commence ops. It was meant to be 'beginning of 2019'. Safe to say we are past that...

Starting June 5, Transavia will start Nantes-Oran 2 weekly

This is the 3rd line opened by Transavia between France and Algeria

Nantes-Algiers : 2 weekly, to be increased to 3 weekly during summer 2019
Lyon-Algiers : 2 weekly

I was last there in February. I was hoping to at least fly out of the new terminal but I wasn't lucky enough.

You can thank the political situation in Algeria for the standstill. The terminal has been ready for a while and was first scheduled to open at the end of January, unfortunately the ceremony was cancelled as former president Bouteflika, at the time in Geneva seeking medical care, was deemed unfit for a public appearance. Now, with the continued demonstrations in the country, opening the new terminal has been put on the back burner - word on the street is it'll be opened, along with the Grand Mosque, by the new leader once the situation stabilizes.

Personally, it's incredibly frustrating that such a significant project must suffer at the hands of Algerian politics. I wish they would open it without having to put on a big show, but then again, I remember reading an article about the Moroccan king opening the new Casablanca terminal around the same time the new ALG one was set to open, and I am reminded of the real motivations behind these projects in the first place. Sigh.

1st flight from Algiers new international terminal is planned April 29th
The 9 Air Algerie daily flights to Paris (4 ALG-ORY and 5 ALG-CDG) will be transferred to the new terminal April 29th
Then AH will transfer all flights to France by May 6th
All AH international flights to be transferred to the new terminal by May 13th

Has there been any news about the new terminal? According to Wikipedia, the terminal opened end of April and then gradually moved all international airlines to the new one. Unfortunately, no source has been mentioned, so I'm not sure, how trustworthy this information is:

The west terminal opened on April 29. Starting its operations in three stages. The first was granted to flights bound for Paris by Air Algérie. A week later, the second fade was to operate flights to all the cities in France of Air Algérie. The third phase after another week, was to operate all the international flights of Air Algérie. As of May 15, the other foreign airlines would also begin operations in this terminal. The Wing 1 terminal 1 will be dedicated to domestic flights.

Some news sources say, the terminal is opened, but besides that Wikipedia note, no other source mentions any changes of the old international terminal or any airlines, that moved to the new one. As I am supposed to fly to ALG in two weeks with Lufthansa, I'd like to know what I have to expect and also organize my transportation from the airport to my hotel.

Air France will move to the new terminal by June 2
Lufthansa will move to the new terminal by end of June

The old international terminal (T1) will be split
Hall 2 : Air Algerie Domestic flights to allow easy transfer to the new terminal. T1 and Terminal Ouest are linked
Hall 1 : will be kept for international flights to/from ME

The new terminal Ouest will be used by Air Algerie to develop its Hub

So Air Algerie is trying to develop the same hub as RAM next door? I wonder how successful they will be. Is there any local demand from Algeria to countries in western and south-western Africa or will they have to rely mostly on transfer passengers?

With it is geographical situation, Algiers is more "natural" Europe/West, South Africa Hub than CMN

In the seventies, Algiers was linked to many west-African cities and had even traffic rights between many African countries

The demand from Algiers is important to some Arabic or French speaking cities like NKC, BKO, NIM and OUA. Business is also increasing with DKR and ABJ. Next AH routes will be LBV and DLA. Of course putting in place a competitive Hub means opening new routes to Africa / increase frequency and adapt flight timing to attract transfer passengers
