FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

***HOPEFULLY NO MORE BUGS IN THE NEW REPORT!

Looks like AA is trying to lock up some TCON markets, IND-LAX went 2x daily as well. Probably trying to put DL on their heels, your move DL...

Like I said, expect more Crj 200 cuts in the future. With all the regional cuts from DTW, the focus is becoming more on an O/D hub. Expect APN, CIU, IMT, ESC etc... to be cut as well in the near future...

Some of you boys better eat some crow!

I called JFK DFW 4 daily on AA last week.

I see AAs game at JFK. Sadly, many of you dont

As for WN at LGB...B6 doesnt fly to DEN from LGB.

I think B6 has been very clear about LGB.

It is a loser...look for a pulldown to JFK
BOS 1 or 2 daily each.

And dont expect a WN hub to replace it. Remember all those unused slots sitting there when B6 came in...

A lot of that stuff is OO at risk. Is OO cutting the 50 seater at risk fleet?

This past winter was the first time OZ operated SEA daily. Prior winters it's always been 5x weekly with daily service only in the summer.

Perhaps they realized daily was too much for the winter. Last month they switched the route to their new A350s.

in that case would UA attempt serve the markets thru ORD? I would expect state of Michigan to step in before all those markets drop off grid entirely.

Looks like AA is trying to lock up some TCON markets, IND-LAX went 2x daily as well. Probably trying to put DL on their heels, your move DL...

That doesn't even match DL's established frequency on LAX-MSY. I don't see how this is putting DL 'on its heals.'

A lot of that stuff is OO at risk. Is OO cutting the 50 seater at risk fleet?

OO keeps signing EAS contracts, so I would think they would be keeping the at-risk fleet.

Disappointing as a frequent traveller on this route - but the downgaging of pretty much everything CAK on DL ( ATL went from all mainline in the spring to CR9s now ), combined with DL following the other carriers trend of adding/upgaging CLE and the reduction of CR2 operations made this move not all that surprising. I'd also imagine the DL redcoats there will be or have been re-assigned as well.

This route has been around since the NW days, looking at departedflights.com I'm thinking at least since the mid 1980s.

Oh no jfk-dfw going to 4x daily I agree is not a good sign. More connections coming for flyAArs. Not a good sign but I still say they keep the main business core flying at JFK. It's a fantastic asset for oneworld it's just going to be more of a oneworld terminal than a AA one.

AA has some hits don't expect to see lax/SFO/lhr/LAS/EGE to take hits they make money and those are established. Other leisure routes could take hits I guess, but I hope not.

I think AA had a chance of making NYC work, but they were never willing to put in the amount of resource to keep it going the way DL was willing to. They've picked strengthening LAX first and then ORD second amongst the competitive hubs. I'm going to enjoy the low fares on some of these AA flights for as long as they are still operational.

i cant believe F9 is completely exiting the DTW-MCO market, and during Christmas to boot, what the heck. Those cuts by DL are odd too, SAN down from 3, have not seen that, and thinking its a misfile. Likely the same with the new SJC service. CAK makes sense, sad to say, but I doubt they will cut service to those Northern Michigan cities, those cities depend on that service, and have been loyal to NW and now DL. They pay big fares too.

For the WN nails in the coffin comment at LGB, fun for you to say I am sure but this is B6 saying "peace out" LGB, you didn't want a good carrier here, so you get WN. I am sure they are not seeing it as a coffin

CLE-SLC i bet is that the airport is really busy in January with Sundance. The airport has been asking Delta to watch its schedules with construction and things. It could be all this is.

There is no way they would have enough data to cut already, and its pretty far away at this point. Lots of ski traffic etc at that time, i dont think its demand more SLC construction scheduling. That flight has few people booked at this point since its new, easiest to rebook the low numbers on. Its so new it just the most convenient to rebook and reschedule the people on.

Where are you seeing that F9 is exiting DTW-MCO? Frequency was cut from daily last winter to 5x weekly this winter (not running on Mondays or Fridays), and both F9’s website and this thread confirm as much

I doubt that. Most likely, a seasonal reduction during the slowest travel period of the year. CLE is a long, thin route and it isn’t like it generates a lot of traffic to the Elkos or Redmonds of the world. With the price of fuel swelling, overflying DTW and MSP makes less sense. Long term, if fuel remains where it is, I’d expect DL to peel back the secondary, long, thin markets it’s recently added to SLC, especially outside the summer months.
We don’t care what your next flight is.

F9’s reduction isn’t surprising. They could easily fill flights, but at trash yields — $29 fares ($19 “Den Deals”) were fairly common. Ultimately, NK’s a better known carrier in the market, and there is significant faction willing to pay a premium to fly DL. There’s definitely no shortage of capacity, and it will remain one of the cheapest places to fly to from DTW.

Regarding SAN, DL - to the best of my memory - has never flown SAN more than 2x outside the peak summer travel season, when it increases to 4x. The planned reduction is simply DL scaling back planned growth. Interestingly, DL’s retaining the 6PM departure from DTW - historically the flight’s operated at 8:30PM.

Concerning DTW cuts, I really do believe that having AA and UA hubs at ORD is really beginning to take a toll on DTW. AA and UA at ORD are both adding flights an new destinations increasingly and diminishing the need for lay-over flights to DTW. Also I doubt if DL has the level of commitment to DTW that Northwest had. AA starting CAK to ORD was probably the deathnell for CAK-DTW. Matter of fact I would fly a CAK- MSP more often than CAK-DTW.

Great to see SYR getting some love. What it really needs, though, is LUV.

*LF PGA-PHX SEP 0>1.7[0] OCT 0>1.7[0] NOV 0>0.2[0]

Well that explains an odd routing when Contour/LF swapped the E135 that's been doing the OAK-CEC route for a few months now. N16502 routed CEC-IGM-PGA-PHX-MQY (div to JWN) returning to base at Smyrna. Must have done a road-show visit or proving run for PGA. The OAK-CEC aircraft now is N11526, which was doing MCN-BWI, having routed out west MCN-ABQ-CEC to pick up the rotation. (ABQ is not exactly a straight line routing, so I don't know that reason.)

Is this a short-term PGA-PHX subsidized fill-in, since the frequency drops down in November?
Worked for WestAir, Apollo Airways, Desert Pacific, Western, AirCal and American Airlines (Retired). Flight Memory: 180 airports, 90 airlines, 75 a/c types, 403 routes, 58 countries (by air), 6 continents. 1,117,006 passenger miles.

What was the issue at MQY that caused the diversion? The E135 isn’t a big bird but it’s big for JWN, especially with BNA closer to MQY.

I'm perplexed by this one as well. Wasn't Boutique in the process of replacing ZK on the PGA-PHX EAS route?

Route just started and announced not long ago. No need to go crazy on predictions just yet. Let’s see what happens by the following winter.

I assume because it looks like they are trying to feed traffic through DFW and thus pull down the “hub” at JFK?

I think because service has been quadrupled year over year to hide slots. Just a hint of the broader direction, though.

Regarding the discussion about DL ending DTW-CAK:
DTW-CAK was a capacity-purchase / fixed-fee route, typically operated by OO CR2, prior to that 9E CR2 and going back further XJ SF3.
It was not an at-risk route, although in theory has the hallmarks of potentially being one. There are a few other routes in the past few years that moved from fixed-fee to at-risk/pro-rate flights, typically ones that OO took over from 9E.

Note that the pro-rate/at-risk routes, are not all EAS. A good portion are EAS so in essense a good portion of the revenue is subsided, but there are some that are not EAS routes. Here's a fairly recent list of the routes that OO operates under the pro-rate / at-risk agreement, that utilizes 24 CRJ-200s:
For Delta Express flight number range from 4277-4296 and 7359-7439

From SLC:
BTM - Butte, MT
CDC - Cedar City, UT
COD - Cody, WY
CPR - Casper, WY
EKO - Elko, NV
GJT - Grand Junction, CO
LWS - Lewiston, ID
PIH - Pocatello, ID
SGU - St George, UT
TWF - Twin Falls, ID
WYS - West Yellowstone, MT (Summer Seasonal)

From MSP:
ABR - Aberdeen, SD
BJI - Bemidji - MN
BRD - Brainerd, MN
HIB - Hibbing, MN
IMT - Iron Mountain, WI
INL - International Falls, MN
LSE - La Crosse, WI
MQT/SAW - Marquette, MN
RHI - Rhinelander, WI

From DTW:
APN - Alpena, MI
BGM - Binghamton, NY
CIU - Sault Ste Marie, MI
ERI - Erie, PA
ESC - Escanaba, MI
IMT - Iron Mountain, WI
ITH - Ithaca, NY
MQT/SAW - Marquette, MI

Seems F9 is giving BNA a little love. I will never step another foot on them, but it looks like they are growing a bit.

Expert AA fanboy? You correctly predicted a 4th DFW-JFK frequency and apparently know what AA is planning while thousands of other users do not?. Have you called Doug about an executive position yet?

The AA hub at JFK is nearing its end.

The fat lady hasnt sung yet...but shes warming up.

They will hold as many slots as possible by flying to hubs and a few token partner hubs in Europe along with SFO

The moves are already being put in place...FAAboys dont want to see it though

IT'S Roll has changed its not going to be a connection hub or ATLANTIC Gateway, ITs a large OD focus/mini Station. Get over it its been known for awhile. TILL a new direction or DP leaves this is it. Moving on

So what’s with the LGB slots that were supposed to be announced this month that B6 left earlier this year? I hate to see B6 being treated this poorly by competition and NIMBYS after putting all that money into the airport.

CAK is a DGS station... Sadly, DGS Redcoats are expendable to Delta. They cant vote for a union at Delta, and they don't get DL profit sharing.
