Utah Man Crashes Plane into Own Home after Domestic Dispute

Mon Aug 13, 2018 5:39 pm

An experienced pilot was arrested for domestic violence yesterday, bailed out of jail, then took his employer's plane and crashed it into his own house in the middle of the night. It appears that he clipped the garage of the house across the street, and maybe also caught the top of a car parked on the curb in front of his house (no other explanation for the overturned car in the front yard). He crashed into the front porch, the house caught fire, and everybody inside luckily survived.

This case in Utah today is tragic, but also interesting in contrast with the Seattle Q400 incident. It shows the difference in what can happen when an aircraft is flown with malicious intentions.

A shame someone can be so angry and feel there is no other way.

Commonality is that both cases of mental illness. Difference is one was ground ops and this one was an experienced pilot. Also, one only wanted to take his own life and this one wanted to take lives.

Yikes. This is scary. Imagine you sleeping in your home next door and boom, jet crashes next door.

Worst part was that the kid in the marriage, actually said that his dad was a great guy (step dad actually), and he loved him. He said the last words were something like, it's only going to be worse for a little bit then it will be better. Next thing you know he's plowing into the very home you're sleeping in.

Thankfully no one else was injured which is insane for what actually happened.

RIP.

Anger + a very bad Idea taken from a suicidal nutjob= nothing good. How many more copycats still outhere? I wonder if he did a barrel roll, or maybe loop the plane before throwing it against the house. What an Idiot. :irked:

This premeditated crash has many similarities to this other one, which happened 8 1/2 years ago . . . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Aust ... ide_attack

Security experts over at the SEA QX thread, any ideas to stop this one?

The pilot was a contract pilot at one time for the company that owned the Cessna Citation CJ1. He took the aircraft from a local airport late in the night. Pretty sure he didn't seek owner permission to use his aircraft for this mission...Sad evolving story!

This crash site shows that he didn't want to kill anyone but himself and the house.
Had he smashed into the house at full speed, there wouldn't have been any survivors.

People sometimes fail to consider all their options.

Not to mention his wife and stepchild in the house.

Looks like a very low speed impact. Odd, if his goal was to harm those in the house, I would have expected much more damage. It almost looks like the plane practically stalled into the house. I wonder if he intended to impact the house itself nose high, but catching the neighbors roof through off his path just enough...

Yeah it Looks like it was a slow impact. I'm thinking maybe he was rethinking weather he wanted to harm them and that's why it is looks like such a slow impact

Nothing will, hence a lot of the discussion on the QX thread is pointless. If an individual wants to perform such a crime, they will and there is nothing that can be done to stop it.
this is another sad set of events, glad to see the family was not harmed!

With such a low energy impact there is a good chance that guy survived the crash but burned to death. Man if your going to do it, do it hard and end it quickly. Glad the wife and kid survived though.

It turns out the pilot simply had a very bad sense of direction.

Seriously though, it was a citation 525. Must not have been carrying much fuel because the house appears to be only superficially damaged.

The wings didn't even penetrate the structure. The BA 747 which while taxing clipped the building in Johannesburg back in 2014 did more structural damage than this. But the subsequent fire was pretty bad.

I think the plane may have crashed on the sidewalk right in front of the house, otherwise I can't imagine it would still be standing at all.

Looks like the same thing happened here in New Hampshire years ago. Saw this on the local news.
