COK (INDIA) Closed Due to Major Flooding

Wed Aug 15, 2018 5:07 am

CIAL (Cochin International Airport Limited, http://cial.aero) has posted on their site that Airport Ops are closed until 2pm IST due to heavy rain in the state. Nedumbassery Airport, as it's also known to locals, has been using pumps to help clear out water in the area to continue operations and have had to shut down ops a number of times already. Also famous for being the World's 1st airport to be fully powered by Solar. It's an airport that is near and dear to me, especially after seeing the images of destruction from flooding.

Update: Now closed until Saturday 8/18/18 until 2pm.
“Operations were suspended after water reached the runaway in the early hours of Wednesday. Most of the incoming flights are diverted to Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikkode airports,” CIAL director ACK Nair said.

Great to be solar powered, bad to have insufferable dranage, runway height, and pumps. Was this a 500 year storm? If not...

Its the worst rain Kerala has ever recorded to date. And this is a state which sees torrential rains every monsoon

500-year storms are becoming more like 5-year ones, but yeah no climate change is happening as some want to believe.

from multiple news source "The Cochin International Airports Limited has announced that the Kochi airport will remain shut up to 2 pm on August 26. The city continues to received heavy rains and water level inside the airport is rising. The Air Navigation Services wing of the Airports Authority of India has issued suspended air services till August 26"

its a devastating monsoon season, a national disaster

So beyond typical design criteria. Thank you.

Much of the climate change has been increased fuel for power plant use. But we go off topic quickly discussing solutions.

However, I modeled global warming decades ago. We are approaching my predicted peak year... Let us see if the trend reverses and the major inputs I modeled were on track. For example, June 21st should be the highest solar input day of a year, but the hottest day of the year in the northern hemisphere is later. I'm curious as to the model I simulateded's accuracy.

Lightsaber

Whats not helping COK is its on the river delta of Periyar unlike other airports in Kerala, as long as dams upstream are overflowing it will be flooded.
