Gatwick IT Outage: Whiteboards Used For Flight Information

Nice way to go vintage here... Gatwick's Flight Display Screens went offline after a Vodafone glitch caused them to go black.

The airport's staff is updating all flight times through the use of a whiteboard. Flights are departing on time, so that says a lot about their efforts to keep the airport running despite the tech woes.

So long as regularly updated with staff present throughout, it's a considerably better than nothing in an emergency-type situation as no IT.

The UK will be singled out for all kinds of hacking attacks after Brexit, as the infrastructure is very weak and the country is preoccupied with the chaos there will be. The country should brace itself for a rough ride when it comes to glitches like this.

Honestly does BREXIT have to be brought into everything associated with the UK - this example was Vodafone related nothing to do with the EU/BREXIT as per airport post on facebook :
"Due to damage to a Vodafone fibre optic cable overnight, we are continuing to display flight information manually. Our contingencies are working - we have a our whiteboards out and our friendly staff are on hand to help direct passengers. Tens of thousands of people have already departed on time. Apologies if you have been inconvenienced by the issues today."

Next people will be blaming the issues with the Weather on BREXIT - let's just remember this is an Aviation Forum - an airport (could have been anywhere in the world) had an issue caused by their provider and the contingency plans were put in place. Nothing else to see here.........

Shouldn't be to much trouble for the average traveller, your boarding card has gate number and departure time.

Just look at your boarding pass, check your smartphone, glance at the whiteboard and carry on. Can't see that this is a crisis that it's being made into.

Many UK airports don't list the gate until an hour or less before departure. Including on boarding passes.

Buy yes, easy to get online.

Quick thinking at gatters - they deserve credit (assuming it is regularly updated)

for sure savvy travellers have apps etc to find their gate, but there are a lot of once a year travellers at Gatwick and without this it would be carnage

Another person who thinks the UK will descend into a dystopian North Korea style world.

As an IT guy it seems quite remarkable that a single fiber problem would cause what seems to be a complete network outage for an outfit like this. I have a lot smaller customers than this with dual or even triple fibers for redundancy. Then again, redundancy may also fail from time to time; nothing is ever 100 %...

The outlage lasted nearly eight hours, not a great advertisement for an airport which wants a second runway and many more passengers.

That is absolute utter nonsense!!. Scare tactics to influence voters (since some are on here).

Good job it was at Gatwick.
Stansted don't display gate info on their website

I came through Gatwick yesterday morning. The biggest issue for me was no flight information on the baggage claim conveyors, so they were relying on PA announcements and a couple of staff to tell people where to go to get their bags.

Have you been through Gatwick? My experience (three or four times, at least) was that there are no gates on the boarding card so they can hold you standing in front of the screens in the shopping-mall/prison area for as long as possible - presumably to get you to buy something. Gates only show up about five minutes before departure, so you end up sprinting all the way...

Yes, Gatwick is my prefered airport. Each time I have flown with BA and picked up my boarding card at the airport the time and gate are printed on it.
