Could we see LCC becoming flying billboards?

Sat Aug 25, 2018 12:47 pm

This picture got me thinking.

Could LCC start renting out their fuselage to all and sundry as a way of making more revenue and just keeping their id/logo on the tail? HSBC seem to own all the jetways around the world, are Ryanair missing a trick?

Ryanair use to do this. As did Western Pacific before they went bust, as did Skybus planned to. It is apparently not as profitable and lucrative as one might think.

I would think the reach for airborne ads is pretty low since the only people who would see them are people at the airport

And at airports where passengers inside terminals don't have good views of the aircraft, and passengers board by jetbridge, not many people will see the planes close enough to read the ads. This is where Ryanair's preference for using stairs instead of bridges wherever possible could have an unexpected side-benefit

On a limited scale this could work. I'm not thinking of whole fuselages but rather on details. For example you could put advertising on the inside of the winglets. This is what passengers see during the flight when they look out the window, and therefor it might be the most seen part of an aircraft. At least it is what passengers see for the longest amount of time. Not only is it being seen, but passengers also take photos or videos out of the window and often capture the winglets in it.

I don't see why not. The San Diego Trolleys are used as billboards. The entire car is covered with an ad. Since LCCs are in business to transport people and cargo, using the plane for ads would be another way to add to the bottom line. On a philosophical note, this would add to the visual pollution and the question why do we want to use every available space to promote consumerism.

Putting an ad on a trolley, bus, billboard, etc is much cheaper than wrapping a plane, all while being seen by more people. Cost matters. Since they are localized it is easier to cater to a regional market with specific ads. Planes move across countries and sometimes borders. The return of investment of advertising on an entire plane fuselage is questionable for many companies.

Umm...does for former Shamu One for Southwest count? It's definitely a flying advertisement for SeaWorld back when they still have the partnership. Or Westjet's Disney Plane.

But otherwise, it's not done widely b/c repainting an airplane is not cheap, nor they can just take down the ad after a few months like on a bus/trolley/train. Most of the time it's more of a "partnership" (i.e. Airlines put up an ad in the form of special livery, and that airline become the "official airline of (insert company/event)").

Advertising on seatbacks and tray tables is more cost effective. Maybe it should spread to overhead bins. "Hurt in an accident....?"

How about displaying ads non stop over the IFE and PA speaker system? Passengers can’t tune it out and they can’t leave..

SkyBus did it. it does have some exposure. Good target market if you want to reach people on this site.

I quite like that Vodafone livery, it's very VS.

ANA have had some too, Pokemon and Hello Kitty come to mind. But they don't count as you asked about LCCs.

Ryanair already has ads on its planes. It is not as evident as it was in those photos from the past, but they do with stickers on the outside, and covers in the overhead lockers.

Currently, most adverts are about destinations, such as Gdansk, Vigo, Vitoria or South of France.

Skybus has planned to sell their fuselage space. I think Nationwide actual did buy space.

I believe there is a HARIBO plane, a Deutsche Bahn Plane, several HV planes with other tour operator branding (who don't own planes).

There is also several charity planes, which in some way you could see as bildboard advertising. such as the Peter Pan foundation for Transavia or the Pink delta plane for breast cancer. Hi-Fly even has a A380 for ocean awareness.

Let alone sport team planes (Man City, American Football teams etc etc) or large sport events (Emirates and Rugby World Cups for example).

It's not just something LCC's do, even if an airline does not directly get money from it, they somethimes do it for goodwill..

Norwegian has been and continues to be a big supporter of United Nation\s UNICEF and has a Boeing 737-300 and currently has both a Boeing 737-800 and a Boeing 787-9 with UNICEF tail and other branding on fuselage:
