Alaska Airlines adds SEA-CMH (from March 7, 2019)

Tue Aug 28, 2018 8:27 pm

Word is circulating CMH will be announcing new service tomorrow at 9:30am. It's unclear if it's airline AND destination or one or the other and CMH's social media is mum as usual (they've tended to promote day-of before), but whatever it'll be has led to a press release inviting the media. (In other words, it's not a F9 dart throw, random point-to-point add, or a 5k. I think they learned their lesson with the 5k. :rotfl: )

For context, the airport has long sought service to SEA, SFO, SAN, and SLC, as well as a TATL flight of some sort. CMH-SLC was announced in April to return in 2019, so...AS to SEA and/or SFO? DL to AMS? The return of B6?

If it's AS announcing SEA -- I'd love it to also include SAN but I doubt it -- then AS will have an announcement at the same time (if not earlier.) AS tends to announce new routes on Wed mornings (early) so that would fit. And of course AS is supposed to be making some new-route announcements soon -- there's a thread on that.

Whatever it is, good for Columbus -- new service at any level is a great thing!

AS typically does route announcements on Wednesdays...just saying.

EDIT: Looks like someone beat me to it. Going straight to the point, my money's on AS to SEA, with an outside chance of SFO as well.

AS to SEA makes a lot of sense. Wasn't IND announced near a similar time last year?

AS to SEA sounds likely as they have alot of slack in their fleet coming up. That would be my first Guess

DL has announced SLC will return so that also is pretty high odds

Since they recently announced a 5k, will they announce a 10k in the near future  Hopefully it is something good though

Could also be the Aer Lingus route that got thrown around a couple weeks ago.

I’m pulling for UA nonstop service to SFO. It’s long overdue.

Also adding some mainlines in the IAD-CMH mix would be great. Whenever I’ve been on that route in the past, it’s been beyond full on the CRJs.

With the number of cities besides SEA on the coast that AS is now growing to some degree -- PDX, SFO, SJC, LAX, SAN, all hubs and focus cities -- I wonder if the days of AAG announcing a single new route (SEA) from their new cities (a la TPA, IND, PIT, ICT, etc.) are over. It would seem to me better to start at least 2 routes from new cities in order to more quickly recoup the costs of opening that new station.

I'm sure AS figures SEA will do fine from any new station they add, but why not start another route at the same time?

All I'm saying is if tomorrow's announcement IS in fact AS to SEA, I wouldn't be totally shocked if a second AS route from CMH is also announced. (I know, I know, I would really like it to be SAN but being realistic, it won't be...) That reminds me, I need to check and see if CMH-west coast is within range of their EMJ?

I also wonder if the route won't start for 11 months, like PIT? (Announced on 11/15/17 with service to start 9/6/18!)

My first thought when AS and VX merged was this. UA has added SFO to literally every similarly-sized city in the region except CMH. Maybe AS pulls the trigger on both.

CMH is too far east from SAN to be served nonstop from SAN on an E-175 regional jet since CMH is 1964 miles east of SAN.

Well, personally I think these are the possibilities

UA to SFO
AS or DL to SEA (I think AS is more likely)
DL to AMS/CDG

It's gotta be one of these, I don't know what else could be worthy of a press conference announcement.

Looks like some of those SFO Airbuses age being moved around a bit.

If somebody in their scheduling department really wanted to have a twisted sense of humor, they could schedule the inaugural on one of the two A319s which once belonged to Skybus.

Seems to be kind of a trend lately with AS -- loading new routes before the official announcement. (It happened last with SAN-GEG a while back.)

Whish is kind of nice for A.netters as it allows us to discover things before they're officially announced!

Well, no offence to CMH but to me, the fact that this is the first Ohio airport served by AS is quite interesting to me. Or maybe I've got things confused about size of cities in Ohio?

Anyway, that being said, congrats to CMH on landing AAG! Hopefully there will be further AS destinations added in the future.

Columbus is centrally located, 2 hours from most Ohio cities on all sides, and is the fastest growing metro area / youngest / educated / blah blah. Makes sense for their first dive into Ohio, to be honest.

A perfectly logical addition for AS. I wouldn't be surprised if B6 gives CMH another shot too.

I figure it's a big longshot but, for whatever it might be worth, Columbus is also one of the cities still in the running for HQ2.

Congrats to Columbus fliers! Nice add. The airport and area desperately needs more West Coast service.

BA, Cleveland is still quite larger due to the proximity of Akron and Canton. The Cleveland CSA is the largest metro in the state. The article is wrong, Cleveland-Akron has about 750k more people than Columbus.

Congrats to Columbus fliers! Nice add. The airport and area desperately needs more West Coast service.

BA, Cleveland is still quite larger due to the proximity of Akron and Canton. The Cleveland CSA is the largest metro in the state.

izbtmnhd, did you open the article I referenced?

Yes, reporter is wrong. See above.

"Northeast Ohio" is the most populated region of the state, but is composed of several different metro areas, principally Cleveland and Akron, which are not a combined MSA. This is somewhat accounted for in the larger CSA numbers. That said, the region is stagnant at best. Central Ohio, home to Columbus, has traditionally been smaller than both NE and SW Ohio (Cleveland and Cincinnati), but is fast growing and currently the dominant engine of economic and population growth within the state

Cleveland’s suburbs merge with Akron which is why it’s a CSA. Likewise Akron and Canton.

Columbus is faster growing no doubt.

You're both right. CSAs and MSAs are flawed and imperfect ways of estimating a market for aviation service. The important questions are always 1. How many people live within a distance of X from an airport, 2. How often to they fly, and 3. Where do they fly?

There's really no point in splitting hairs. I'm inclined to support the view that CLE has a larger catchment, even if CMH is posing stronger growth.

Fair point. I did not see he was talking about CSA (Combined Statistical Areas).

The Cleveland-Akron-Canton CSA has two commercial airports also, CLE and CAK.

I tend to think CSAs sometimes overstretch themselves, but when it comes to airport catchment, it's probably an appropriate measurement.

Is there a subsidy involved?

Perfect timing. My daughter was just asked to be a bridesmaid near Columbus in May and is an AS ff. Hopefully they have some intro fares.
