All great jokes from "Airplane" aside...let's hope that this isn't anything more serious than influenza...which of course for some can itself be VERY serious and even deadly.

What concerns me the most is the apparent timing of passengers all showing similar symptoms.

If you are already "coming down" with something flying is aggravating stress.

( noticed that recently. started the flight with just a little roughness in the nasal cavity.
I left the plane with fully stopped up nose and feeling "glassy eyed".)

As someone who was once quarantined in his doctor's office by the CDC after succumbing to flu-like symptoms after a trip, I do not envy anyone on board this flight. You have not lived until you've had the upper respiratory culture taken - think long q-tip up your nostril. Mine ending up being whooping cough not directly related to the trip, but I had transited LGW Customs along with pax from Virgin Nigeria and they needed to rule out any outbreaks of avian or swine influenza near any origination. Quite the experience!

Flu symptoms take days to appear after contracting the virus, not hours. If you were infected by the flu on a flight, you wouldn't start feeling it until long after the flight.
They were either sick when they got on or it was something else...

Absolutely. Completely attributed to change in pressures. I've noticed the same. After my two sons had their ear tubes put in, the doctor told us (as he knew we were about to go on a flight a week later) would be the happiest people on the plane as they would have no problem with the pressure changes (since the ear tubes allow for immediate equalization in the sinus cavities).

This makes me think of a House episode where a lot of passengers started feeling ill due to psychosomatic illness. Maybe that's the case here.

That wouldn't explain the passengers with fevers. One can exaggerate symptoms (e.g. not feeling well, having pain, etc.), but how does one fake a fever that's documented by a thermometer?

They don't fake a fever, they really believe they have a disease. And you can develop fever because of stress, this is proven.

Yes, the incubation period is days. Onset, however, happens very fast. You can go downhill in 6 hours.

I remember going to a birthday party once and about 30 of us came away with a horrible flu virus.

It looks like today it was a case of food posioning, or a really bad bug has done the rounds throughout the cabin really quickly.

100 can reported as sick, 12 can be reported as taken to the hospital. Symptoms are often various. I suspect public health authorities want to get a handle on this. And it most likely will be nothing serious. But competent medical people need to make that decision.

Seconded - we have more accurate information now so it should be amended.

The whole thing sounds like a flu virus of some sort. It's nearly inevitable on long-haul international flying that you'll end up sick with that many people in one confined space. Although flying out of Australia recently, I ended up with food poisoning which I'm thinking was caused by a chicken panini that I ate on the flight (in business class). About two hours before descent I started to feel sick. Thank goodness I had an overnight stay in a hotel before my next flight.

If the plane wasn't ground stopped for long, we can assume health officials ruled out things which would be really bad such as weaponized anthrax, ebola etc.

This may have come down to a bad batch of food but whatever it is, if there was a concern about an aerosol based pathogen, this would have played out much differently.

As to why the cabin crew was removed ... if you're investigating this, you look first at the common items that could affect all passengers : the crew, the food, and the air. A sick cabin crew member walking up and down the aisle ... you can see what kind of effect that could have.

Clear the crew, clear the air, you have only food left ... and given 3 or so different meal choices, you can easily see how 1/3rd of 300 or so people could get sick.

Any contagious decease transmitted on board would not come into effect during the flight.
incubation times are invariably longer than 12..20hours.
