Hainan plans Xian-LAX

Wed Sep 05, 2018 10:27 pm

Per DOT filing, twice weekly effective December 6th using 787-9s.

This makes HUs 4th LAX destination.

Seems Chinese carriers have not lost their appetite for new US routes.

Well with millions of dollars of subsidies that sure will help with profitability.

Meh, more like with millions of dollars of subsidies, HU can at least use that to cover some of their debt. :duck:

This marks the return of TPAC service to/from XIY since UA dropped SFO-XIY, though. Predicted load factor? 65% max.

Yep and Hainan group (including GS, JD, 8L and such) are known to like flying subsidised routes (virtually all their intercontinental network from places outside PEK/PVG/CAN is subsidised). They might get better load factors than UA though, since their bargaining power to those price-sensitive travel groups are quite big and their XIY marking team are one of the better ones within the entire HNA group.

I think they will do fine.
They have point of sale advantage and flight is only proposed twice weekly. They already do several secondary cities to LAX - CTU, CSX and CKG.

Good to know. Have long wanted to visit Xi'an to see the Terracotta Army. As far as HU they are a pretty good product among Chinese airlines in my experience.

Does anyone have a listing of all the Chinese secondary city flights to the US? Has to be a rather big list by now.

Thank you for the list. Quite impressive. LAX has 10 secondary flights not counting this new proposed XIY link.

CZ SHE-LAX starts in 18Dec18 from what I recall. It was also reported that Tianjin Airlines had applied to start TSN-LAX also starting this December but I haven't heard any new info on that for many months so not sure if that will happen or not.

Is it just me or do the Chinese carriers really know how to use the 787 for its intended purpose?
I know not all the routes listed are 787 routes but im willing to bet the majority are.

Helps when you have local governments heavily subsidizing such ops...

I mean, AA would op longhaul flights from Dubuque to Duderstadt, if the states were subsidizing it against direct and/or opportunity losses.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

Wow, yet another secondary China route out of LAX.

Are there any other that are planned or pending approval?

JFK-SZN is rumored on HU. Also Juneyao has expressed their interest in starting flights to the US once they have all of their 787's.

Well LAX is one of the financial capitals of China. Along with SFO, YVR, SYD and perhaps PEK/PVG/TPE/HKG/SIN. :stirthepot:

I visited last year and it was worth the trek. If you have time, do a day hike up Mt. Huashan which is a short train ride from Xi'an. It's one of the five sacred mountains in China. A non-stop from US is a wonderful option. I know it's heavily subsidized but maybe it will prove it's metal.

Hey guys,
Xian is absolutely my favourite Chinese city and I encourage everyone to add it to their itinerary if travelling to China. So much to see and do. I employed a private guide for the first time I was there and it made such a difference. The Entombed Warriors were spectacular as were the 'medieval' city walls, bell tower, Emperor's tomb and the museum. The airport was great to see many 'regional' types in Chinese service, and over the years I have even logged Dornier 328s there.
My home city, Sydney, has a huge range of Chinese flights to primary and secondary cities and it's great to see LAX likewise get a range of services.
I have never flown HU but have heard good things about it!
Cheers
