BA A320neo registrations

Thu Sep 06, 2018 2:31 pm

BA's new A320neo fleet all have registrations beginning G-TTNA, B, C, D...

I know that historically BA registration codes always have a 'hidden' meaning. Does anyone know what TTN stands for?

The A320neo (Three Twenty Neo).

The A321neo (first Nov 2018) are going to be G-NEOx.

The A350 (first early 2019) are going to be G-XWBx.

All cool but assumes no more than 26 of one variant right? Or do they move to TTO/TTP and so on?

Probably a whole new set. Like how the B744s went G-BNL* > G-CIV* or the B772s that went G-VII* > G-YMM*

There could be some overlap with numbers. So a few more, skipping the pairs that confuse.

Additionally, the UK register doesn't currently permit the re-use of marks, so any G-TTNx mark that's previously been used by any British aircraft is also off the cards. It's why the 772 that should be G-VIII is instead G-RAES (for the Royal Aeronautical Society), as VIII was used until July 1993 on a privately-owned Spitfire.

But yes, 26 marks maximum in each "range".

Thanks for that, I've gone and updated my post about all the secret registration meanings at BA on Travel Update which is linked here.

Is the comment about the 787s on that site correct? ZB as it was reallocating Monarch's order?

In theory 26 available but the UK have never used the letter Q, so 25 in reality.

I’m not sure about the 787s. The -8s are ZBJx the -9s are ZBKx and the -10s will be ZBLx.

It seems the -8s are the meaning and then they followed the alphabet for the -9/-10. i.e. from J to K to L. Probably no meaning in the -9/-10 and I’m unsure about the -8. Maybe ZBJ looks a bit like 787 but that’s a bit straw clutching I think.

Just fyi, they already have a G-TTOB and TTOE for a pair of A320s.

I agree with you there. Someone on another forum said the ZBJ looked like 787 but even I was like, "Yeah, really? I don't think so".

Makes sense then if they're going for J K L. Thanks for that!

Yes they do. These originally belonged to BA franchise carrier GB Airways whose IATA code was GT for non-BA-numbered flights they made, which explains their choice of registrations (series G-TTOA to TTOJ for A320s and G-TTIA to G-TTIG for A321s). All flew in full BA livery. Eventually the owners of GB Airways decided to sell out, and BA wasn't interested (perhaps to their subsequent regret), so the planes, crews, and Gatwick and Manchester slots ended up with Easyjet. They didn't keep the planes long as they were non-standard to the Easyjet versions of the A320 family, but these two were sold on to BA. All the others were also sold but have ended up with other airlines and new registrations.

I'm not sure about that. Monarch only ever had 6 787's on order for the -8 if I'm not mistaken, though I too noted the coincidence. Had they taken that order as intended and not changed their business model, it would have replaced the A300's and A330's in the fleet.

For a short while, easyJet also inherited the A321's GB Airways had on order. There were one or two that were delivered from Airbus after the takeover was completed. If I remember rightly, it was the GB Airways takeover and experience gained from operating the larger aircraft that led to easyJet exercising options in their large A319 order to swap to the A320 and they recently started operating A321's full time. I wonder how much easyJet regret not ordering A320's sooner? It also got a foot in the door into MAN and they've since expanded their base there, including duplicating some LPL routes and launching services to destinations that GB Airways wouldn't have typically flown to.

As for BA, it's interesting that most of the former GB Airways destinations are now part of the main BA network out of the London airports.

ZB on the BA 787's is nothing to do with Monarch, the ZB is as close as you can get to representing "78" but the J and K bit always baffles me as I'd have thought logic would have mean the -8's were ZBH- (8th letter of the alphabet) and the -9's were ZBI- and the 10's ZBJ for the same reason.

on the triples, VII- series is just the roman numerals for 7 and YMM- stood for year 2000
except RAES which is in honour of the royal aeronautical society

ZBJx is reference to Z as in "zzzzzzz" for sleeping on the "Dream" liner and B for Boeing and J for Jet. K and L are most likely just following the alphabet.

But what made them skipping G-VIII and naming RAES instead?

G-VIII was (or still is?) on a Spitfire. The UK CAA doesn't allow re-registering of numbers so once used it cannot be used again.

So what about the four Embraers that BA Cityflyer have on order.??

They have already used up G-LCYA to G-LCYZ (LCY - London CitY)

G-LCZx was the rumor and most likely. It is completely clear and the follow on registations.

It's just as plausible as any of the other reasons. The K and L make sense of course. Be nice to know this one definitively :)

The GB Airways aircraft were G-TTOx on the A320s (Three Two O (as in the number '0') and G-TTIx on the A321s (Three Two I (as in the number '1').

When GB Airways started taking their own 737s they also whent with the registrations G-OGBx, with the middle two letters being for the airline. A few UK airlines used the G-Oxx series that way - G-OBYx for Britannia Airways 767-304ER aircraft (BY was their IATA code), G-OBMx for British Midland 737 aircarft and G-OZBx for Monarch A320 family aircraft (ZB was their IATA code).

I always thought G-STBx on the 77W fleet was in recognition of the Heathrow maintenance hangers rather than being STretched Boeing Aaircraft.

G-BOAC was BA's first (and flagship) Concorde, with (hopefully) the registration's historic significance being obvious. The other Concordes then took in sequence registrations in the G-BOAx series.

When BA ordered the British Aerospace Advanced Turboprop they registered those in the G-BTPx series for BAe ATP.

I have never found an explanation for why the 737-436 fleet took registrations in the G-DOCx series. I know the last two became G-GBTA and G-GBTB after initially taking in sequence registrations with G-GBTA being in honour of the Association of British Travel Agents, so G-GBTB was registered to just follow on.

Brymon Airways, a one-time BA subsidiary, registered its Bombardier Dash 8 fleet in the G-BRYx series (self explanatory) and then when it got Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft they took registrations in the G-ERJx series.

Likewise, BA franchise carrier British Regional Airlines went with G-EMBx for its Embraers. It also had BAe Jetstream 41 aircraft in the G-MAJx series from when it was Manx Airlines (Manx Airlines Jetstream) and BAe ATP aircraft in the the G-MANx series (as in MANx).

BA franchise carrier Loganir registered its Saab 340 aircraft in the G-LGNx series (as in LoGaNair) having previously operated BAe ATPs (in its own colours) registered in the G-LOGx series (as in LOGanair), many of which were re-registered in the G-MANx series.

Wasn’t it the Guild of British Travel Agents for G-GBTA? Great thread.

Anyone know where BMI (now BA so on topic!) got G-DBC*’from?

Actually, I think you're right with that one.

Another good BA was G-KILO for their short-lived new build dedicated freight 747-236F, which was sold to CX after only a couple of years service in the early 1980s.

The ex-BCal A320s were also registered in the G-BUSx series for obvious reasons! If I recall, BCal was going to use the G-BRSx series, BR being their IATA code and the S possibly for shorthaul?

Something to do with British Midland's origins being Derby Airways, I believe.
