FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: There was an addition made to last week's report that some people may have missed.

3 daily flights next summer? I wouldn’t have expected that from outside the East Coast.
Remind me to send a thank you note to Mr. Boeing.

I was told many years ago by a member of the executive suite at JetBlue that TPA was their worst performing Florida city.

Since then smaller cities like SRQ and DAB have come aboard so TPA may no longer be worst.

But 2 daily JFK TPA in January does say a lot

Not that surprising to see the CLT F9 reductions. Not only is it the slower winter period but it is AA's sheer dominance in schedules (4-5x day each on CLT-SAT/AUS) that leaves very little low hanging fruit for F9.

DL CVG-PHX isn’t supposed to start until November and it’s already getting dropped.

PVC-HPN? That’s gonna be one gas-heavy 402 for that little runway.

Which is surprising given all the New Yorkers in the Tampa Bay area. It's certainly no Miami/Ft Lauderdale/Palm Beach, but there's a lot! Really surprised it's only 2x daily in January. You think they'd downgauge to an E190 and at least do 3x for a better schedule.

PVC-BOS is a quick 15-20 minute flight across Cape Cod bay. PVC-HPN is more like an hour + flight. Definitely further than BOS.

There's plenty of NYC-TPA capacity in January - it just isn't on B6. Using Monday, 1/14/19, DL has 8 flights JFK/LGA-TPA; UA has 5 EWR-TPA; WN has 2 LGA-TPA.

HPN is much, much further than BOS. You’d have to take double or even triple the gas, especially considering weather and other possible delays.

Enilria's title is misleading, we already discussed this on the Ohio forum. DL just loaded a default schedule on CVG-PHX to match CVG-SEA, but the intention was always to operate the route in the fall/winter/spring. IMO, I think we will see CVG-SAN this summer to fill in that gap. Back when I first heard the possibility of PHX returning, SAN was also being considered.

The better news is that CVG-SEA is back in the winter!

Agreed. TPA is different from the more successful east coast markets, but 2x (on 200-seat A321’s) from B6’s largest focus city during a fairly busy travel period is quite uncompetitive.

B6 also runs 2x from EWR and 1x from HPN, and if we count SRQ (1x B6/JFK 1x DL/LGA 3xUA/EWR) it gives a more complete picture of the market. DL looks like it is, unsurprisingly, the leader.

RDD has been wanting LAX for awhile and felt left out when ACV got it. I’m sure they’re pleased now. RDD has slowly been building up the past couple years.

Not really. PIA's departure just means more people will use MLI to connect through DTW. They're not that far away from each other.

SNA is worrisome. The flight is doing well yet they cut it down to 5x weekly. Maybe they just dont get enough premium traffic on the weekends. SJC is still daily though. At least they didn't end SNA.

CUN is not a big deal. People aren't going to CUN as much. NK's MBJ add displays that people are finding new places to go like MBJ and PUJ. However, Delta's schedule on DTW-PUJ is ludicrous. PVR, SJD, who cares, at least DTW still has them. Until DL starts ending services there's nothing to worry about.

It is notable to mention that all Florida stations this winter will see increases in seats besides MIA. MCO in particular will see mostly 75Y's while FLL, RSW, and TPA will see more 757's and A321's. The only service where DL lacks in the market is the subpar SRQ service and the nonexistent VPS service.

Don't worry, NK is picking up the tab for most flights this winter. A Spirit A321 has almost as many seats as a DL 75Y.

Put it this way, if DL ends SJD and PVR, the Spirit comes marching in.....or they'll just march in regardless and takeaway market share, which shows their dedication to the market.

Indeed, TPA and SRQ are closely overlapping markets.

Even with B6's growth in SRQ, my impression is that they have essentially withered in the Tampa Bay regional market.

Wonder if this will be year-round? A pretty hit for Central Florida, where local and regional institutions have been trying to cultivate demand from Peru in particular.

MLI is an alternative to PIA, to people who live in like Galesburg, but is is 90 minutes away from PIA. STL is almost 2 1/2 hours away. PIA pulls quite a bit from Bloomington, Springfield, and Decatur. MLI nor STL are really good alternatives. The fact is, it is pretty easy to get south or west from Central Illinois (BMI, PIA, SPI, CMI), but it is becoming increasingly difficult to get to the northeast other than through ORD.

I did think of that. But I haven’t seen anything from FI that would suggest they added a 3rd flight. I mean if the market can handle it I say go for it. I didn’t think that many in the PacNw were drawn to Iceland. SEA already has plenty of non stops to Europe. I don’t know where else SEA would be getting pax.

Regarding the DL changes:
1) Are the adjustments in SNA potentially due to changes in allocated slots? It's not just DTW-SNA that is seeing a reduction, but also JFK-SNA and LAS-SNA. A total of 11 weekly frequencies cut.
2) I wonder if DL's seeing a decline in corporate traffic through PIA since Caterpillar moved their HQ to Chicagoland...
3) I'm pretty sure CVG-PHX was announced as a winter-seasonal route, so the bigger surprise to me is that it was for sale in May/June in the first place. MSP-ORF is also a route that has been seasonal for the past several years, so the change here is just back to the normal.

Also, it's cool to see AA starting PHX-MSN and PHX-GRR!
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

PVC-BOS is a quick 15-20 minute flight across Cape Cod bay. PVC-HPN is more like an hour + flight. Definitely further than BOS.

I mean HPN-BOS is about the same as HPN-PVC. HPN-BOS in a small plane doesn't seem like an unusually long flight to me.

If DL would have removed one DTW-PIA flight, I would not have been surprised. The second daily flight was oddly timed and comparing numbers to MLI, it looks like PIA-DTW had some lighter load factors. Completely removing that service surprised me though. I think MSP will hold on though, as DL's drops in BMI means they are no longer even offering connecting services to a lot of cities from BMI.

I read an article that PIA's other recent gains have meant that departing seats are up by one of the largest percentages in the country. It was probably just time for something to give.

Other stations that rely heavily on 50 seaters should be on notice.

Well, you know, DL hates DTW and regrets keeping as a hub. :banghead:

The OAG filing has 17 7M8s and 13 75Ws and that continues through August. No idea beyond that. Perhaps they did not initially cancel the original flight when they swapped eqp?

I wondered the same "slot" question.

So, PDX is getting more than daily flights to KEF this summer? That’s very interesting if true. 1.5 is like 10x weekly?

Shocking to see frequency fall so low even with EWR/HPN-TPA and SRQ nearby. B6 will be operating more TPA-BOS flights at 4x, but how long can that sustain with DL growing in BOS?

Rather anemic for summer VFR traffic, and it would be almost 2 years after Hurricane Maria.

I see the GRR additions as just capacity moved from DTW to better serve the Michigan market. DTW lost frequencies to both MIA and PHX on American while GRR saw adds so to me that's just a shifting of capacity to better serve the states market

Wonder if this will be year-round? A pretty hit for Central Florida, where local and regional institutions have been trying to cultivate demand from Peru in particular.
I'm very surprised they're choosing to discontinue this route, I've always thought it was decent.

Me too, and now that Avianca just started flying LIM-MCO, I don't see a reason for them to leave, is just like telling Avianca to continue with a market they started with.

This week I saw Latam was flying the A320neo in the route, that was a capacity increase for them there, because it was usually flown in a A319, so I don't know why they are quitting.

Something appears to be wrong with FI's reservation system. The only SEA-KEF flights they are selling in June have an AS segment and a connection in SFO.

Is it possible that the 3rd flight is not yet being sold? I think it's possible considering FI is rebanking some of the European flights.

I dont know anything about the the 3rd flight, but AS provides a lot of feed in SEA, not just from the NW. I recently flew ABQ-SEA-KEF-CPH, and there were a few others from my ABQ flight going to KEF.

Agreed. TPA is different from the more successful east coast markets, but 2x (on 200-seat A321’s) from B6’s largest focus city during a fairly busy travel period is quite uncompetitive.

There's plenty of NYC-TPA capacity in January - it just isn't on B6. Using Monday, 1/14/19, DL has 8 flights JFK/LGA-TPA; UA has 5 EWR-TPA; WN has 2 LGA-TPA.

B6 also runs 2x from EWR and 1x from HPN, and if we count SRQ (1x B6/JFK 1x DL/LGA 3xUA/EWR) it gives a more complete picture of the market. DL looks like it is, unsurprisingly, the leader.

I can say that at least out of JFK, B6 outperforms DL (by quite a bit actually) especially when considering that B6 is flying higher density planes on this route. I wonder if they is other reasons here, because they are back to 4 a day by Mid February. Maybe they are out of planes.

B6 vastly outperforms DL on BOS-TPA also.

2019 SNA slots allocation is not due out for another month or so. More likely DL is preemptively trimming, aware it cannot make full use of its recently expanded slot portfolio.

That may be true today, but DL will be up to 3x in BOS-TPA on mainline capacity not seen since the Song days.
