It will be interesting to see what happens. OMA had OMA-CUN lined up with NW in 2006 and CBP basically told the airport they wouldn't staff it even if a FIS facility was built. Similarly, LGB within the past couple of years had B6 wanting to fly to multiple destinations, but wasn't guaranteed CPB staffing either.

OKC already has a CBP office on-site on the north side of the airport. Now I'm not sure what kind of capabilities that office has nor if anybody in there could do clearance related duties but the presence of an office might help the cause.

OMA has CBP on site already as well to process general/business aircraft and was still essentially told don't bother building a FIS. Like I said, I'm interested to see what happens. The quotes I've seen from the OKC airport director and the one rendering are a bit ambiguous on how much of the FIS is actually being built.

I believe the space will be made ready to be built out but I don't think they are actually doing a full FIS buildout.

According to another thread, looks like UA will be going 1x mainline in the summer on OKC-ORD to supplement the E175's already on the route. Gotta give UA some credit on this one, offering a much better product to AA's CR7's but then again AA going 8x mainline to DFW during the summer is a nice capacity upgrade from the current mix of RJ's and S80's. I wonder if we'll ever see AA upgrade ORD, it has been CR7's forever.

OKC is quite simply a much larger city than Tulsa. Tulsa's latest metro population (MSA) estimate is 961,000 while Oklahoma City metro (MSA) is 1.37 million. That's a difference of 412,000 people. Oklahoma City metro population is also growing nearly at 10% while Tulsa is growing at 5%.

More people and more jobs, just more people traveling.

MSAs are typically not a great measurement of an airport's catchment. CSAs (when possible) are far better.

CSA-------------------------------------------------2014-----Ch 2010-2014------TUL % of OKC
Oklahoma City-Shawnee, OK-------1,408,578-------------+6.51%
Tulsa-Muskogee-Bartlesville, OK---1,139,468-------------+2.99%------80%

Airport ------Enplanments 2016--------Ch 2015-2016-------TUL % of OKC
OKC----------------------1,796,473-------------------(0.37%)
TUL-----------------------1,342,315-------------------(1.27%)------75%

Not a great deal of difference between the two cities.

AA's inaugural OKC-PHX starts today! Hopefully this route performs well. WN has had the OKC-PHX market cornered for a long time. HP appeared to be making this route work but it was scrapped post US merger. Given the large AA FF base in OKC though, I think they've got a good shot.

Quick question:

What's the 744(?) doing over by the JPATS/Federal Transfer Center ramp? It looks like it's ex-World Airlines (WO)?

I could just barely see it when we were taxing to 13L this morning.

Surprised it's only daily to start - surely 2x/day would work? We would certainly use it on our trips to SoCal.

Agreed... Considering LAX, and CLT started 2x daily and PHL will be 2x daily it’s not typical of what AA has been doing but I’m glad OKC got the flight. My guess is they still want to funnel the majority of OKC traffic through DFW which will be 8x mainline and 1x Eagle over the summer. I’d be interested to know why they went with a CR9 instead of mainline because WN has been filling 737’s going west out of OKC for years but I don’t know enough about the business to make a guess. The flight times have already changed as well with the OKC-PHX leg departing around 1600 but still within an hour of the 2nd LAX flight. I figured to make the flight more attractive it would either be spaced between the LAX flights or a few hours after the 2nd to allow more options for customers going west.

AA kicked off PHL-OKC today! Looked like the first flight out of OKC was about 1.5 hour delayed due to the weather there this morning, hope this route works out.

Glad to finally see WN announced DCA and will be interesting to see how SAT does on F9.

Oklahoma Aviation | 2018 discussion

Tue Sep 11, 2018 3:19 pm

Hey folks!

Newbie here (well, went from "lurking" for 16 years to a poster just yesterday! :P), just want to say a quick hello to everyone, and if you'd like to know more, here's a little blurb about myself.

Anyway, hope it's cool to create this thread. I did an advanced search on topics for Oklahoma City's airport and found a bunch of topics scattered around, so I thought I might make a one-stop thread for all things aviation-related, not just for OKC but air service developments for other Oklahoma airports that receive commercial air service as well (Stillwater, Tulsa, Lawton).

Not sure if you guys have seen this but here's a pretty cool video showing how the new terminal expansion and first part of the east concourse at OKC will look like. Shows the new security checkpoint and the airside/gates of the expansion. And the most exciting part of it all for me: the observation deck!

Not too long ago, TUL was awarded a $750,000 in federal grant money and is seeking nonstop service to Seattle (SEA) on Alaska Airlines:

Granted, it's just a short article that was released two months ago, but if this develops further, we could see nonstop SEA-TUL flights sometime...

Looks like the OKC-DCA flights are loaded on aa.com and the flights are going to be timed very well for people looking to do a day trip to DC. WN had initially had similar times but has adjusted them to not be so business friendly. It'll be fun to see how this route plays out going from no carriers to two in such short time.

On another note, sounds like F9 is drawing down flights again and the airport trust is none to pleased because of the incentives they offered that F9 gets to keep. But the fact they agreed to allow F9 to have incentives with no recourse if they pulled down service is their own fault.

September totals are in:

OKC September passenger traffic

Overall nice gains by all carriers except Via (of course), though difference column-wise UA/UAX are both the big winners this time. Big gains for G4 and AA as well.

Not sure what Via's modus operandi is, it's not doing that well. I'm actually surprised it's adding flights next year. Huh.

On a side note, the SkyWest maintenance facility is officially open for business.

Hopefully that pans out. That could be a route where AA could codeshare as well, so Alaska would have a large pool of flyers to draw from. Would love to see both of the coast regional players Alaska and JetBlue come in.

MCO is out as well according to The Oklahoman even though at the end F9 says it's seasonal... Guess we'll wait and see.

According to the OAG thread, AA will be going 2x PHX in the spring. By my count this will bring AA up to 21 flights/day at OKC in the spring: 9x DFW, 3x ORD, 2x LAX, 2x PHX, 2x CLT, 2x PHL and 1x DCA. Lately ORD and CLT have seen an increase during the summer meaning OKC could see 23 AA flights. WN will still be the leader in terms of capacity since most of these are RJ flights but AA should be the leader in terms of flights. If AA keeps with the early morning departure out of OKC and evening return out of DCA, I could see that flight becoming very popular and maybe going mainline at some point.

It is unusual for a market the size of OKC to have only 1 daily nonstop to MDW since most of the other similarly sized markets have at least 2 daily nonstops to MDW on WN on weekdays and Sundays. WN could add a 2nd daily nonstop to MDW from OKC, and the 2nd daily nonstop would make it easier to connect to other destinations east of the Mississippi from OKC.

Southwest finally began nonstops between OKC and DCA yesterday. American Eagle will follow suit in February, apparently with E175 service. AA/Eagle seem to be doing pretty well in the Oklahoma City market. After the DCA addition AA/Eagle will have around 20 daily departures combined (about 22 in summer when frequencies are added back).

Looks like DL will be taking over the four new gates when the East Concourse expansion is completed in two years. I'm assuming they'll be giving up the three gates they currently occupy but the article doesn't specify. It's interesting they're getting all four because I was under the impression one of the gates would be built to accommodate a FIS facility and be used to attract international service from either G4 or F9. The airport has made it clear that LGA is the top target for new service and DL seems like the perfect candidate so I'm curious if they might have used that as a bargaining chip when offering the new gates to DL.

Doesn't make much sense when you look at AA/Eagle ops (currently at 20-21 departures, rising to 22 this summer with the peakday departures). They both have three gates which are utilized quite decently, so you would think AA/Eagle would get priority.

Now if DL/DL Connection get all four gates (which I still doubt since both carriers have less flights combined from the current three gates than AA/Eagle or WN), who gets the three gates emptied by the DL/DL Conn moves? Is the airport just reshuffling airlines around the terminal?

I've noticed AA utilizing Gate 1 (G4) and Gate 12 (F9) during the early morning departures and late evening when things get really busy so maybe they're content with their current arrangement. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see AS get moved in to one of the DL gates once this happens and AA take over Gate 2. I don't see WN wanting to move from their current location just on the other side of security but possibly they could pick up one of the old DL gates when this happens.

I'd be interested to hear what the airport folks plan on doing with the vacated gates. Maybe they think the extra gates will be enough to lure a new airline or two in a couple years.

Quick question for y'all as I head home:

Was there a reason given on the AA 3193 (ORD-OKC) diversion to PWA?

I'm currently waiting on UA 4170 that's been delayed for flow control reasons into ORD. Everyone's having bad delays today, but AA seems to be in a very bad way.

MSAs are typically not a great measurement of an airport's catchment. CSAs (when possible) are far better.

CSA-------------------------------------------------2014-----Ch 2010-2014------TUL % of OKC
Oklahoma City-Shawnee, OK-------1,408,578-------------+6.51%
Tulsa-Muskogee-Bartlesville, OK---1,139,468-------------+2.99%------80%

Airport ------Enplanments 2016--------Ch 2015-2016-------TUL % of OKC
OKC----------------------1,796,473-------------------(0.37%)
TUL-----------------------1,342,315-------------------(1.27%)------75%

Not a great deal of difference between the two cities.

Tulsa is benefitting from leakage from booming NWA and folks skipping out on higher fares at XNA. It is a fact, I and many other do it all the time, particularly via WN.
