FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".
NOTE: Sorry for the delay. OAG has not been updating Sunday morning reliably the last few weeks.

The AA PHL reductions are more evidence that AA is completely slashing the PHL schedule around Thanksgiving and Christmas (schedules cut by 50-75%). Though, on 12/24 the lone PHL-LAS flight is a 763

Nice adds for DTW, whats up with the Air Europa Cancellation, anyone know? Isn't that imperative to get people to their network?

DTW did quite well with this update. A majority of the routes were beefed up.
Remind me to send a thank you note to Mr. Boeing.

I am really amazed F9 lasted this long in BOI. Shocked they even restarted the routeeto begin with.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

UA BNA-SFO FEB 1.9>3[1.0] MAR 1.8>3[1.8] APR 1.9>3[1.9] MAY 1.9>3[2] JUN 1.8>3[2]

THREE flights a day on a route they didn't even serve a couple of years ago?! This is nuts. So is pricing on the route. VX was practically giving seats away before the merger. Then UA went to 2x daily and it seemed like United dropped fares to get butts in the seats. Now AS seems to be pricing higher than UA did the last few itineraries I have looked at. For New Year's, for example, AS was coming in at almost twice what UA was charging.

Going to 7x on YVR-SEA next June. I think they’re already on YVR-JFK seasonally. Might be starting the season a few days earlier next summer.

For 3M, those are some pretty significant cuts. It looks like they’re exiting RSW.

An MSP airline attempts to break out into the PNW. Even if their head honcho in Network Planning is an ex-ASer, wouldn’t it make more sense to start your non-MSP expansion closer to home, like in say MKE?

Many airlines have significant cutbacks beginning the Tuesday or Wednesday after Thanksgiving, until the week before Christmas (around 12/19).

In past years Thanksgiving day the afternoon are no ops (at least in PHX and I believe PHL), and no TA departures that evening (out of PHL).

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Yeah, it’s always a depressing Sunday when I grab the schedules and the file is exactly the same size as the prior week as was the case today. I guess somebody was asleep at the switch.

I’m shocked ANC-ORD 3x is Real and all red eyes. That’s nuts.

DL’s had a daytime ANC-MSP going back to the NW days; right now it’s seasonal since they started flying ANC-SEA again a few years ago.

Continuing on ANC... Looking at UA’s capacity next summer, looks like they’ve obviously significantly shifted focus to ORD connections at the expense of DEN and SFO.

IIRC DEN had up to 3x (2 redeye, 1 daytime) daily to ANC this summer and SFO up to 2x on peak days. Both appear to be reduced to 1x daily next year.

Combine that with the fact they run FAI only out of ORD and I guess it’s clear their Alaska flight strategy is clearly centered on Chicago and East Coast traffic. Guess it makes sense, I’d much rather connect from East Coast-ORD-ANC than fly 4-6 hours to Seattle only to do 3-4 more.

It will be interesting to see how AS responds. They typically have two daily in summer. That would be 5 total! It could also be an attempt to keep AA off the route.

Btw, we are on your schedule Enrilia, so don't fret it. Thanks for all the weekly updates.

Or UA could just use a larger aircraft. I suppose though they don't have many to spare in summer.

Wonder if this has more to do with pilot shortages then anything else

It seems 3M cannot get it together. I suspect they will be a footnote in a long list of airline failures.

Some significant adds to SEA for the summer compared to what was previously for sale, although in some cases it just brings things back to last years numbers.. (there were some small decreases in BOS, FAI, BOI and LIH.

Obviously they were doing well since they dropped the route. Full flights don’t always mean profitable, especially when Frontier is selling $2-20 fares out of DEN.

UA does BOI-DEN 4-5x per day and WN 2x per day. F9 two or three times a week just didn’t make sense on a route with decent daily service.

I was waiting for the BZN QX ticket counter to open and saw maybe 40 people check in right next door at F9 on a Sunday. Meanwhile my QX flight to SEA was sold out. I wondered how much longer F9 would last.

I'm honestly surprised about F9. Flights were full to nearly full most of the time. #1 complaint I kept hearing next door was the airline constantly losing people's luggage through DEN. #2 complaint was several cancelled flights and massive delays at least once a week. Lots of pissed off folks at the F9 ticket counter in BOI.

Doesn’t really matter; NK and F9 aren’t necessarily competing for the same types of passengers as the legacies, which is why both can be very successful on routes they’re slaughtered frequency wise (ORD-LAX, for example).

Obviously, F9 wasn’t generating the revenue necessary to continue service.

This was an interesting one. At one point Delta was operating this with a daily morning CR7, then it went back to a CRJ 4-5 days a week, and now it's twice daily.

I went for a peek and now it's loading in July as 3 daily. I had heard the yield was high, maybe they are trying to add connectivity to other cities via LGA. I know US/PDT used to operate this up to 4x on some days with a Dash. Interesting, regardless,

And thank you as always Enilria, I have always enjoyed letting my inner avgeek out reading these.

Several of those are flat with last year, but yes a few.

So for June they are only up 1 rt. They will scale back May later.

When will KE finally put the new BOS-ICN on sale. Wasn’t this announced over a month ago?

It's loaded in Amadeus so I would think very soon. I'd be shocked if it doesn't go on sale this week.

Has anyone heard of the UP BOS-NAS launch that was reported in this thread a few weeks back?

This might be to link up with WS

JFK-YVR is an existing seasonal route that DL has been on for the past couple of years in the summer. Nothing new.

Per United.com, UA is indeed going 3 daily on ORDANC. Wow!

The cruise industry is adding a lot of capacity to Alaska itineraries in 2019. UA is likely looking to route that traffic thru ORD.

In 2019, Princess will move the Royal Princess to Alaska routes and have its largest total Alaska passenger capacity in the 50 years it has cruised that area. Royal Caribbean will add the 5,000-passenger Ovation of the Seas to Alaska service. Celebrity in 2019 is replacing the Infinity in Alaska with the larger Eclipse. There are also other capacity adds from other lines for 2019.

Where does Delta fit into this equation? Haven't they done 5x 757 MSP-ANC In the past...

How many daily scheduled passenger flights link ANC with the rest of USA? I think 3x ORD is right in line and probably not the frist time it has been done, but any thoughts appreciated.

BZN is a market that F9 has been in consistently since even before the transition to ULCC. They’ve even added a frequency recently, going from 3x weekly to 4x weekly, and they’re running through the winter this year after it being summer seasonal for the last several years. Given they’ve recently extended it to year round, added frequencies, and have kept the route through the last several turbulent years of network changes for F9, it appears that DEN-BZN is performing decently for them.

ABQ and BOI look like the first two of the 21 routes F9 added from DEN that were added as part of the 85 route mega-expansion last summer to be cut.

Goodie! There should be some great cruise fares available out of SEA with so much capacity! ;-)

Word around BOI today is that F9 will be back in the spring, BOI is seasonal. Not sure how much truth there is to that rumor.
