Oman Air adds ATH with the 737 MAX

Wed Sep 19, 2018 3:44 pm

Oman Air will be adding a flight from Muscat to Athens as part of its expansion with the 737 MAX from 2019. No starting date or frequency just yet, but the airline's chief executive has confirmed the route will be launched with the MAX 8.

This is great news! Congratulations to Oman Air and ATH for this new flight. It's great to see more and more airlines coming here, and adding some very welcome sights to the airport.

More details in this article: http://aviationtribune.com/airlines/mid ... to-athens/

WY will operate the new service using their newly delivered Boeing 737-8MAX aircraft with the below mentioned schedule:

Days - Daily

WY 191 Dep MCT 1445 Arr ATH 1950
WY 192 Dep ATH 0020 Arr MCT 0635+1

P2P round trip traffic demand between MCT and ATH in 2017 was 5,600 passengers only.

I feel launching this route as a daily service from the get go is an extremely high risk move by WY. Maximum this route needs to be operated is 4 times per week for them initially for the first year at least. In winter season, demand will fall a bit hence having a daily operation would not be commercially viable.

I can't imagine O&D being much higher for ATH-DOH or ATH-AUH. Just like EY and QR, I am sure Oman Air will rely on transfer passengers. Seems like ATH market is massive, I can't remember the last time an airline failed there due to low loads.

Exactly, when it comes to ME3 & TK its never about the O&D. When they have billion+ people living just around them, all they do is funnel them.

QR and EY have Australia to feed ATH adequately as well as a much larger SE Asian network. This WY cant match currently.

AUH and DOH had much higher P2P to ATH than MCT in 2017 i.e. DOH had 29,000 round trip pax whilst AUH had 28,000 pax each respectively.

Maybe their O&D was larger overall but given the amount of seats they offer it's, relatively speaking, smaller than Oman Air's. Also, Oman Air gotta start somewhere the same way all these other airlines did two, three decades ago.

Many thought Scoot was going to fail yet ATH was a total and utter success for them.

Quite a few Greeks working in the GCC after the crisis. After all, Doha to Athens is the same distance as Dublin to Athens, and those countries are tax-free.

Also Greece is a popular destination for GCCers. It is the closest (with Cyprus) European country, so for a long weekend or bank holiday, Greece works better than the longer trek to Western Europe. For instance Jeddah to Athens is the same distance than Stockholm to Athens. One can easily imagine a Swedish couple taking a quick Ryanair break in Athens, so a Saudi can do the same with Aegean.

What does the MAX have to do with flying to ATH. They already have 737s.
I can drive faster than you

Great to see WY expand! They are a great airline to fly with and now they have a decent terminal in MCT they off a far better transfer experience! I hope they continue to add smaller routes to expand at an appropriate scale

Great news, bound to happen at some stage as Greece will now now have connections to all the GCC nations with this addition.

Arrival at MCT at 6:35AM allows for good connections to the whole Asian and African network of Oman air.
They fly to 8 Indian destinations among many other places!
So this is the reason they are going daily from the start, to offer good connections from Asia and Africa to ATH and the rest of Greece.
O&D traffic will develop in time like it did with AUH, DOH, KWI, BAH.
