Eurowings announces Newark

Thu Sep 20, 2018 6:31 pm

I know this has been spoken about in previous threads but it's now official. EW will take over DUS-EWR from LH beginning December 1, 2018. Here's the link below. In German though.

This is part of Lufthansa closing their Dusseldorf base, once again concentrating on Frankfurt and Munich only. EuroWings takes over all Lufthansa activities at Dusseldorf.

That brings EW to six U.S. routes from two German bases, if I'm not mistaken:
DUS-RSW
DUS-MIA
DUS-EWR
DUS-JFK
MUC-LAS
MUC-RSW

I could see DUS-LAX being next on the radar.

On a separate note, this removes EWR-DUS from the UA/LH transatlantic JV, no? I assume UA will still codeshare on the service, because otherwise it would just appear to duplicate what they already have in DUS-JFK... Any plans for EW to be included in the JV at some point in the future?

Don’t forget they also announced DUS-LAS starting 07/2019 3 weekly with A343.

Kind of surprised no DUS-ORD service yet. UA/LH and even AA served the route for years up until a few years ago.

Interesting is that this will be on the A330-300, while JFK is on the A340-300 (ex-CityLine configuration). Why not have both on the A330-300 and save the A343 for longer routes? (These A330-300s will be coming from LH mainline via a reconfiguration.)

Since Eurowings is 100% controlled by Lufthansa I believe it is already included in A++ for TATL itineraries.

So with that could they think of connecting Asia to DUS and create a sort of mini bank to feed those flights ?

EW is picking up the old LTU routes which were German touristic destinations. EW already fly to BKK, and they could start HKT maybe even MLE and CMB. Long shots would be GOI and DPS.

You're missing the seasonal Cologne routes:

CGN-LAS
CGN-SEA

It would be interesting to know for sure, as in the past CO flew both EWR DUS and CGN at different times.

DPS is pretty far at 6501 nm DUS-DPS. The A343 probably could, though I doubt that it's efficient enough on such a long flight.

I expect some flights from Berlin sooner or later. Perhaps TXL-JFK or TXL-Florida.

Doubtful you'll see EW fly TXL-JFK. LH could not make it work (mainly due to slot issues at JFK), and with Primera entering the market, probably not much more demand there to pick up. I could see LH using a JFK slot, if it still exists, held over from the AB days, for another mainline flight to FRA or MUC.
