KLM announces AMS-LAS

Fri Sep 21, 2018 1:57 am

https://worldairlinenews.com/2018/09/20 ... las-vegas/

Beginning in summer 2019, Las Vegas will be accessible up to three times a week with a nonstop KLM flight from Amsterdam.

The flights will be operated using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner equipment and will seat 294 passengers.

The flight schedule will be as follows:

KL0635 will depart from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol at 12:30 and arrive at 14:15 local time in Las Vegas at McCarran International.
KL0636 will depart Las Vegas at 16:05 local time and arrive the next day at 11:05 in Amsterdam at Schiphol.

Another push into the AMS-US market for KL/DL. We've got new service to LAS and TPA, and added metal on BOS and LAX. Any other substantial additions to come?

So the “Emirates cancel ISB A380” non-thread attracts 11 replies, but a brand new route launch attracts zero?

a.net what’s going on?

On KL and LAS...a smart add getting into the market before they all come likely makes for a successful route in my view.

Cool add.

I'm unfamilar with LAS TATL flying, what else goes across the Atlantic from LAS?

Skyteam is not messing around, new non-hub routes to LAS, TPA, IND, and MCO in the last year!

There's seasonality and some are just one day per week but this year they include... VS from MAN and LGW, interestingly BA from both LHR and LGW, MT, EW and Condor. I might have missed one or two.

WK flies ZRH-LAS too, which saw more seats than any of their other ZRH-US markets this year. A big winner for them.

I should have specified non-hub TATL routes:
MCO-AMS A330
IND-CDG B763
TPA-AMS B763
LAS-AMS B789

Nice add, I think it's a good addition to the AMS hub & overdue, given the number of successful TATL entrants to the LAS market. I think they will do well, the 787 seems to continue to make more & more routes look viable.

I mean its not confirmed or anything but I definitely would not be surprised to see it especially considering MCO-GRU has been known to get it. MCO-AMS will be a walk in the park for the A330.

Seems like a good add. In addition to the tourist / business convention draw of Vegas, it is also one of the fastest growing cities again, lots of population, doesn’t have to be a one way route. AMS is a great hub for 1 stop connections both ways

VS:
LAS-LGW, daily year-round
LAS-MAN, 2x weekly summer seasonal

BA:
LAS-LGW/LHR, 8-10 weekly flights year-round depending on the season

DE:
LAS-FRA, 3-4x weekly year-round depending on the season
LAS-MUC, 2x weekly summer seasonal

MT (Thomas Cook):
LAS-MAN, 1-5x weekly year-round depending on the season

EW (Eurowings):
LAS-CGN/MUC/DUS, 1x weekly each summer seasonal

WK (Edelweiss):
LAS-ZRH, 3-4x weekly summer seasonal

Norwegian was also did LAS-LGW/OSL/CPH/ARN but appear to be "temporarily" suspending their service.

It's another "unserved route of the week" that is being filled in.

The demand is there for sure.

This shall see high demand on both P2P + 6th freedom.

P2P round trip pax demand in 2017 AMS-LAS-AMS was 63,000 versus 55,000 in 2016 so having a 3wk B789 caters perfectly year round for all market segments.

Their niche focus will be getting tourists from the Scandinavian cities of OSL (11,000) CPH (23,000) ARN (20,000) HEL (7,000) + BRU (15,000) to fly them via AMS along with spillover from UK when VS + BA are full / too expensive.

Amsterdam is a hub for SkyTeam (KLM / Delta), but Las Vegas isn't. That means this flight will have no transfer passengers at Las Vegas, it's O/D only at that end.

There is some possibility of DL LA transfer pax (though not a lot) to SLC and southern California: SNA, SAN, SJC + LAX overflow. KE used to route their SLC pax via LAS- not sure if still do.

Norwegian can only fly in winter months to LAS due to B787's performance in hot months in LAS is not very good, apparently. I believe it is seasonal service.

On January 6 and 7 KLM wil also fly with a Boeing 747 to Las Vegas, specifically for the Consumer Electronics Show:

KLM scraps their flights to Freetown and Monravia (KL511: AMS-FNA-ROB-AMS) to allow the Las Vegas flights because of the slot problems at AMS.

Why is it that Norwegian can't fly in the Summer but KLM would be able to when they are both operating 787s? Is it the variant, or different engines?

The issue is the Norwegian 787's are configured as high capacity aircraft so the extra weight can't handle the Las Vegas summer heat- too many seats need to be blocked which makes the flight unprofitable. FYI back in 767 days Hawaiian couldn't roster their ex Delta non ER aircraft to PHX/LAS in summer, although they could do the 2AM LAS departure as the temperature cools down in the middle of the night.

Should be an easy fill. Hope this works out fare wise. LAS has no shortage of flights to Europe, but on the other hand it can support alot. It's like MCO a flight really can stimulate demand in these markets.

Totally anecdotal, but my experience is that the existing CDG-SLC and AMS-SLC carry a lot of passengers bound for LAS. This might affect the SLC
flight a little bit. Hopefully there is enough growth in the TATL market to keep all of the planes full.

You might want to consider time zones, and when this thread was posted here versus what time it was for a large population of users on this site, especially ones who would be interested in this news.

I have trouble believing that this is correct. KLM can fly a 787 out of SLC to AMS with no problem on hot days, AFAIK. It’s higher elevation. LAS to Europe isn’t even close to the 787’s range.

EDIT: Okay, I wrote this before I saw another post that describes the issue in more detail.

limited growth opportunities due to environmental rules, there is a whole discussion going on now in the Dutch Parliament about it. Schiphol has the physical capacity but that's limited due to legal rules.

This seems like a great add. Right now the only TATL service from LAS to a traditional European connecting hub is BA to LHR. There should be plenty of room for KL to fill up a flight to AMS as well (especially considering the fact that there should be plenty of SkyTeam frequent fliers in Vegas due to DL's strong presence there). Most of the rest of the TATL service from LAS is an interesting/unique mix of LCC type carriers each flying a few times a week and/or seasonally: MT, DY, EW, DE, WK... And then there's VS, who are moving their LGW flight over to LHR come Spring.

I wouldn't be surprised to see KL go daily in the winter if this meets their expectations over the summer.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.
