FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

enilria... thanks as always for these..

Good to see JAX finally get NK... I was always surprised they were not there already. Kind of surprised they did not do a JAX-FLL for the int'l connections like they do with MCO and TPA

With the weekend AA PHLSRQ announcement this past week was also PHL-MLB/EYW weekly service, all on Ejets, wonder why AA didn’t load those

Those F9 route planners have some serious job security.

Most of the DL drops in CVG are OO operated routes, not a coincidence, IMO. Reflective of the staffing situation over there.

GRR is looking pretty good for F9 Maybe they can move into Flint and bring back the Florida nonstop that were lost when AirTran left. Interesting how every week Delta seems to end one or two nonstop links this week it's MKE-CVG also of not is the roll back of GRB-ATL from two to one pretty quickly. Also of note the Delta reductions in DTW-EWR and DTW-BOS

the truth does matter, guys. too bad it's often quite subjective. the truth is beyond the mere facts and figures. it's beyond good and bad, right and wrong...

Of course the 3M drops are old news , but I still shake my head at them. I thought there was considerable promise, esp if they could get the UA code share on those routes, but alas, so many of their plans don't seem to come to fruition. I did question an October start for BKG, although I understood the reasoning for the delay beyond the initial June '18.

DL dropping CLE-SLC in the middle of ski season and 8 months after launch? Is this an error?!

Thanks as always enilria.

I am a little surprised about CHS-DTW. I’m assuming this is just a seasonal suspension. Has it been seasonal in the past? It is a market that I would think could support year round service, but on the other hand, DL does not have very robust service in many DTW to southern markets.

Ski season is not at all where PDEW peaks to SLC

Looks like UA going 3x on ORD-ANC was an error after all.

Well I don't know about "error" ... they did have 3 daily's loaded and bookable - but you're right, gone after one week, fairly bizarre

That seems to be a general trend across the DL network lately. Low performing OO capacity purchase flights have been cut over the past several weeks - DTW-CAK, DTW-PIA, MSP-FNT, plus an assortment of CVG flights.

DTW-BOS is trimming weekend and holiday frequencies. Since the way enilria generates the report, it sums the # of flights for the month divided by number of days to show the average flights per day. In January, for example Mon/Wed/Thu/Friday are 6x, Tue is 5x and Sat & Sun are 4x. In May weekdays are 7x but weekends are 4x.

No, I don't this US ever flew the route. They flew SRQ-CLT forever and SRQ-DCA off and on seasonally for quite some time as well (sometimes only on weekends). Perhaps FL flew the route at some point around 2006-2008?

SRQ is a great little airport that is quite underserved that seems to be picking up service again. In addition to this PHL service and the new F9 service, DL has added weekend service to BOS for the upcoming season.

Seems there's two possibilities:

2) They're actually underperforming routes DL doesn't want to keep

I am a little surprised about CHS-DTW. I’m assuming this is just a seasonal suspension. Has it been seasonal in the past? It is a market that I would think could support year round service, but on the other hand, DL does not have very robust service in many DTW to southern markets.

Its been seasonal suspended in the past. Last winter they didn't operate it in January but it returned in Feb. With this week's change, it was already not operating in Jan but they now aren't going to operate it in Feb. It returns in March as 2x CR9 as usual. For a few brief periods, typically in Apr or Oct they swapped one of the CR9 flights with a 717 but thats not very often.

I don't read a whole lot in the deep-winter / slow season cuts in Jan/early-Feb since its the slowest time of the year for demand everywhere (with the exception of a few destination ski markets, but even then its the slowest part of the winter for ski markets). However even for larger markets adjacent to skiing (DEN, SLC) summer demand far, far exceeds ski traffic which is just one component of the traffic mix.

F9 still amazes me all this expansion with only 78 aircraft. Not sure the pace of receiving new ones but they are always up to something. As for AA PHL to SRQ service this is pretty much a response to F9 response announcement since PHL has never had service to Sarasota before

I pulled some PDEW numbers during Q1, 132 combined so 66 one way. There's no reason they cant have a CR9 run this time of season. Potentially, this unlocks an opportunity for someone like G4 or F9 to go in less than daily.

i think most of it isnt expansion, but funded with cuts elsewhere that arent listed.

Ehh, no one like F9 or G4 is going to jump into a market like DTW-CHS during low season Jan & Feb.
Jan & Feb are relatively cold in CHS and its not regularly comfortable again until March. Its low season for leisure traffic to CHS.

I'd be interesting to see how that PDEW data averages in Jan, Feb, Mar.

The majority of DTW-CHS traffic is going to either be DL nonstop, DL via ATL, or AA via CLT, with maybe some UA via IAD.

It's weekend service when there is already reduced schedules. Not really a need to further reduce schedules to fund this service.

I see DTW-CHS as a better opportunity for NK rather than F9 or G4.

US did fly this route about 25 years ago for about 4 winter seasons. FL never flew SRQ-PHL. US always flew daily SRQ-DCA from what I remember. As far as F9 response, I'm hearing this was in the works for a while. Again, they added PHL-EYW & MLB also and ORD-Fla panhandle. All flights weekly.

F9 is increasing SRQ-ATL to 4 times weekly?

That seems to be a general trend across the DL network lately. Low performing OO capacity purchase flights have been cut over the past several weeks - DTW-CAK, DTW-PIA, MSP-FNT, plus an assortment of CVG flights.

Thank you for your clarification.

Because there are finite number of CR2s in the fleet for DCI and a majority are at OO? Sure they may be underperforming, but OO staffing and performance improving because they’re losing flying has to help

Too bad seeing AA* brand leaving St George (SGU). Guess fairly difficult to change pax habits of LAS flying. But at least UA* still there. All SkyWest I know, so no real big loss. Now G4 can have the whole market lol.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

SGU is closing from April - August. All airlines must stop service during that period.

SGU is going to be shut down for a period of time next summer to deal with unanticipated runway work. I believe that all commercial traffic may have to be suspended.

OO/AA* is all CR7 equipment at PHX except for the PHX-SGU route which is CRJ. Wonder if that has anything to do with the market being dropped. Wont be dropped til June however, maybe a seasonal thing as SGU gets pretty toasty in the summer.

Thanks

NK doesn’t run flights without a lot of local so that weighs against a connector plus they haven’t done that well with short haul, although JAXFLL is longer than you’d think. I think people take few bags on short haul which really hurts them.

With 2/wk routes you can add 9 routes with a plane easily.

Well I don't know about "error" ... they did have 3 daily's loaded and bookable - but you're right, gone after one week, fairly bizarre

This seemed like a big strategy change for. UA on ANC to fight East rather than West. I think somebody higher up saw the change (possibly on this thread) and said it was a dumb move. You see they put the DEN flight back as well. SFO is still reduced I guess.

DL's teetering with SLC-TPA to less than daily is frustrating. It's a freakin' hub. Make it work and flow some passengers over it if need be! (ATL can afford it).

F9 PWN-TPA will be a great route!

Enilria, as always, your hard work on these threads is very much appreciated. Thank you very much!

I have just discovered a new appreciation for your OAG threads. I now realize that your F9 sked extension summary is the best, easiest and I'm sure, most reliable way for me to understand F9's schedule at SAN for the months you include. In other words at a quick glance, I finally have an easy way to learn which cities are served from SAN next winter, and how frequently! Before now, I would have spent probably hours searching through the F9 booking engine, month-by-month, to try to figure out which cities they happen to be serving at any given time. And if I want to create an exact turn schedule -- as exact as possible anyway -- I can use your great recap to guide me. Wonderful!

(I'm actually quite surprised to learn that F9 plans on serving 9 destinations from my home airport next winter, and that 2 of them are daily or better.)

I realize I'm probably very late to the party in realizing all this but I'm glad I did, and so glad you provide this data for us! Thanks again.

Are you sure it includes everything? Looking at PHX, unless they’ve dropped the DEN nonstops it isn’t all-inclusive.

Finally dawned on Gol that 4 flights per day from secondary cities in Brazil to Florida cannot be filled outside of very peak season. Their connectivity is very limited in FOR with flights feeding traffic to/from NAT/REC/MAO/SSA/BEL only. FOR is a bit of a limited airport with an apron for 14 aircraft near the terminal - 7 bridges and 7 remote stands. At least the Florida flights arrive and leave in the morning. In the evening some days of the week the small terminal is double stacked with passengers from TAP, Air France and Condor.

F9 PWN-TPA will be a great route!

I’ve heard AS SEA-TPA is doing very well. I’m sure this is not helping DL on TPA-SLC for those looking to connect in SLC to the Northwest/PNW area.

It’s not getting dropped. It’s just not operating in February and resumes in March.

US flew the route when they opened the PHL hub as well as late as 91 when Midway 1 was flying it also.

Quite a few reductions for transcon flying out of SLC by DL. CLE suspended for the winter. TPA down to 5x weekly. PIT was just reduced to 6x weekly recently. BWI also gets trimmed.

Does this have to do with this construction project at SLC?

Thanks as always enilria.

I am a little surprised about CHS-DTW. I’m assuming this is just a seasonal suspension. Has it been seasonal in the past? It is a market that I would think could support year round service, but on the other hand, DL does not have very robust service in many DTW to southern markets.
I pulled some PDEW numbers during Q1, 132 combined so 66 one way. There's no reason they cant have a CR9 run this time of season. Potentially, this unlocks an opportunity for someone like G4 or F9 to go in less than daily.

I see DTW-CHS as a better opportunity for NK rather than F9 or G4.
Well, NK is probably less ample to do it because of MYR.

It has to do with demand to SLC being lowest at that time of year, and demand to the west coast from the east being lower during this time as well.

There is a misconception on this thread that ski season at SLC is the biggest time of the year for demand to SLC from the east coast, but there is much less of that travel than one might think especially when you consider most people from the east coast/midwest head to Florida/Arizona to escape winter.

Did I read that right that FAT is getting cut next March on F9?

No, it's continuing through the spring with 3x weekly flights. You might be confusing the zero in brackets next to the 0.4 as the frequency, but it's just a YOY, showing that they didn't fly the route at the same time last year.

You know the Delta business plan EVERYTHING over Atlanta and we'll throw a bone or two to the other hubs here and there. Atlanta could afford to shed a lot of capacity and it would still serve it's purpose in the Delta network but that's not going to happen..

Well keep in mind if the schedule is the same as last year it is theoretically not shown, although with F9 it is unlikely anything is the same so that may work!

Are you sure it includes everything? Looking at PHX, unless they’ve dropped the DEN nonstops it isn’t all-inclusive.

Yeah, that's the thing. It's still only changes, so if that is static it won't be shown.

Yes, the format is LASTWEEK>THISWEEK[LASTYEAR].
