JJ A320 hits trees under tow at CGH

Fri Sep 28, 2018 10:36 pm

A JJ A320, registration PT-MZJ was being repositioned from a hanger, when the tug pushing the aircraft back had its brakes fail.
The result was the rear of the aircraft impacting trees.

I guess trees within the airport perimeter isn’t a good idea.

I read the thread title and was thinking, why was someone towing trees?
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.

I can fix it! Have Bondo, will travel.

Just kidding, everybody knows it'll only take one roll of speed tape to mend.

The google translation is a riot!
A plane crashed into a tree when it was taken out of a hangar at Congonhas Airport, south of Sao Paulo, on Friday afternoon (28).

I only ask "How?" The video is really poor, but it shows how much visibility there was (assuming the tree was lit, that I do not know).

Where was the 2nd Tech in the cockpit to stop the a/c? During the Eastern strike was pushing back a 757 in MIA when the tow bar broke. The plane was drifting back into the International Concourse when I radio'd the cockpit to stop just as the interphone cable disconnected. The Tower started yelling to move the airplane - replied that the tow bar broke and if they want it moved to come on down and help. Later found out that there was a batch of tow bars when under hardened parts. Miss those days!

Other than around the old VASP facilities that are mostly deserted, there are only about five trees within the entire perimeter of the airport. This airplane happened to find them. I wonder if running into trees or a building is better. I think a building is better since all the damage is confined. Branches scraping alongside the fuselage could result in having to Reskin sections of the fuselage.

Was expecting to see a dent from W tree trunk, not what looks like it’s been dumped in the middle of a forest.

Doesn't look like such heavy damage on the plane, but then again, it is an 18.3 year-old frame.

You can't be serious. The outer half of the right stab is sheared off.

At least it didn't crash into another aircraft. Silver lining and all that.

I'm sure there are plenty of A320's awaiting the scrap man that could donate their tail feathers. :)

A thorough investigation ought to get to the root cause of the accident.

I suspect it means that the manufacturing process to harden the metal in the tow bars was not done correctly.

Doubt they'll write it off - it's a 2000 A320 not an A306 or 757.
Stuck at age 15 thanks to the certification date of the A320-200 and my parents' decision to postpone having a kid by 3 years. At least there's Dignitas...
