AA New Uniforms Revealed

Sat Sep 29, 2018 1:23 pm

AA employees voted on Thursday and selected a new uniform supplied by Lands End called Modern Voyage. The uniform will be debuted in Q4 2019.

They look quite nice - definitely more premium than the current outfits. But those female neckties are huge, and choosing to incorporate purple seems an odd choice, given how big a part it plays in Delta's new uniforms.

It’s not purple, the suiting is navy and the ties/pocket squares are blue with red detailing making them appear purple in the photos.

I was hopeful. This is simply horrible. I worked for AA in the 80's ... I feel like this is a retro-uniform. It looks hot, stuffy, very corporate-esque. Absolutely no modern style.

The navy looks fine, but those neck ties look a hot mess.

The mannequins they used are all slim/petite. Not exactly representative of the AA workforce. Wonder how they'll look on larger figures.

Oh no! Well, it is Land's End. So dated. I agree with the poster above that this feels like a retro uniform. Very TWA Ralph Lauren 1980s - although the TWA uniform was far more distinctive. This is like retro without style. I hope there is a window for public feedback so they can try to do at least something to spruce it up. But blue polyester is real tough to make interesting.

Not representative of any workforce! Those slim-fit jackets aren't going to be very flattering to most folks....in any industry.
The only thing that makes these resemble an airline uniform is the stripes on the arms of the jackets. Otherwise, these could just be suits that one could buy at Men's Wearhouse, Marshall's etc.

What do you people mean "this is not representative of any workforce?"

I wear slim fit uniforms, and pretty much half of my colleagues as well. Why? Because that's our size and figure. Not a very well thought out statement.

I don’t understand their choice at all, so unimaginative when AA’s peers have debuted (or soon will) much more modern and stylish uniforms. As I said above, these are plain boring. They lack color and boldness, and don’t correlate to their livery at all ... so disappointed.

The huge neckties are probably the feathers from the eagle they killed.

I like them, makes them more distinct from other carriers’ designs in a world of conformity.

I had to check my calendar to make sure today wasn't April 1.

These look AWFUL! Though it's worth noting that the version worn by actual people in the second photo doesn't have the silly red stripe(s) on the lower sleeve.

Just terrible. I like the current uniform with the gingham shirts for men. Just find a different supplier if the fabric is causing issues. I might make Platinum Pro this year and I am NOT looking forward to seeing crews in these fashion disasters every week. I hope AA execs are reading this thread.

These uniforms were chosen by a group of American Airlines employees in an attempt to give the employees a since of ownership. They chose between two different concepts. I would have love to have seen the other concept that they rejected. The problem is that designing by committee just results in a very boring non-creative concept.

They should have left the design phase to a fashion designer. What do a bunch of random employees know about fashion!! Anyway, supposedly some more bold signature pieces will be added to the uniforms to debut later in 2020 or 2021 long after these designs are flying.

I actually really like them. Especially the woman's white blouse with the navy swooshed lines. It isn't EK or SQ or even DL but it gets the job done.

I think the most important thing to remember is that these uniforms were designed by employees, essentially giving them a greater sense of ownership. I do wish however the men's ties were in a similar style to the women's scarves.

Hideous. Sorry. They are are not retro. They are ugly. The shade of blue is neither here nor there. The design is boring and uninspired. It would seem American's brand management is asleep at the wheel.

As much grief as folks give United and the continuation of Continental's 80s globe, United does a far better job managing it's overall brand image.

What I mean is that a slim fitting uniform is not a wise choice if like you said only pretty much half of the work force has that size and figure. Perhaps AA will have a version of these uniforms that will be tailored for those who are of larger size. The pictures shown did not suggest any accommodation for larger sizes.

These are so terribly unimaginative! It is like the result of someone going uniform shopping at a combination of K-Mart of Ross. I think I can actually smell the polyester from here in England.

Come on, AA - you can do better than this! Your employees deserve better. How about trebling the budget, for starters?

They look cheap and outdated. IT reminds me of the 1990s. United and Delta definitely look more modern and professional for this era. IT resembles the recent service I have received on American. As awful as the CO globe looks on United aircraft, United does a much better job of branding even if their service does not live up to it all the time. American branding is really boring and uninspiring. Hopefully they can get someone new in charge of this airline to turn it around. Hopefully this is not the final, approved uniform.

Either way, very late 80s potato sack navy blue. Not remotely good.

It cracks me up ... In other threads people rant about corporate greed and go on and on about mismanagement and how they clearly can run an airline better.

Here the employees chose and it's still managements fault .... How dare they get to choose? They should be over ruled.

The employees chose the most functional and brand representative option. I think they chose well.

I am Platinum Pro so I fly frequently with AA. I previously had status with AA and with US before the merger. I actually liked US. But now, I'm beginning to agree with those who think that Parker is counting his beans a bit too hard. This smells like treating their people badly, and treating their customers badly, Very sorry to see this race to the bottom continue.

How exactly does that uniform represent the AA brand? Nothing about it says AA.

Given that this was chosen by FAs who think 80s permed bed hair is an acceptable standard of personal grooming, I am not surprised in the slightest that this is what they came up with.

It was not all employees who voted, it was a committee made up of "85 employees" and apparently those 85 chosen for the committee have no sense of style. This is awful.... looks cheap, outdated, and just badly designed. It's just poor design plain and simple. Hopefully AA has time to fix this and come up with a new concept. This is embarrassing.

From article:
In a dramatic real-time vote, some 85 American employees who are part of the Frontline Uniform Advisory Team (FUAT) chose between two sets of uniforms dubbed “Skybound” and “Modern Voyage”

If there’s one thing that’s consistent, it’s that the industry has to have a whipping boy. It used to be UA, and now it’s AA. I have no idea what changed, but I knew it was coming. I think the media (along with casual industry observers) tends to echo each other, so there must be some point out there where the percent positive press crosses the percent negative press, and there’s always some correlation with the same for competitors. Not sure how much of it really is substantive at the end of the day.

I like that it’s employee driven(or supposedly) but AA crews now look like every other airline in North America and Europe that isn’t VS. AA for all intents and purposes owned silver/grey, even incorporating them into their highest FF tiers, premium branding, first, business , and premium economy seat covers. In that context, these uniforms don’t match much of anything. Surely there’s a grey or charcoal dye that doesn’t itch or give people respiratory problems?
The shirts and scarves/ties can be whatever, by ditiching the grey suiting, unless there was no safe color available, is a mistake.

The current uniform, when worn correctly, actually looks good and fits the AA visual identity. Knowing AA’s senior crews though, what’s presented here will be augmented by a whole array of “accessories.”

No.. its a mix. Left 2 and maybe 3 are inflight and the right are customer service. They just dont have their blazers on. Many FAs where their uniform w/o the jacket. And all the scarfs can be mixed within the employees.

I wish someone would actually give DL a run for its money as the premium carrier. DL has some significant areas where it needs to improve, from its weak frequent flyer program to the lack of a true business class lounge product to some significant holes in non-stop Asia service. But when the competitors roll out a product like this, Delta just stays miles ahead. I recognize that not everyone likes the Posen uniforms, but still, they are a highly original, designer-led investment in the brand that makes DL just feel so much more premium. American has very good J seats on its new aircraft, but when pair the seats with a weak investment in employee uniforms, the whole thing feels second rate. Why have highly competitive lie-flats on the 77Ws when you spend a bunch of money on TWA-1984-minus-Ralph-Lauren uniforms? It makes no sense.

Aren't AA FAs currently wearing a mix of three (?) uniforms? I saw one in Miami the other day with the old uniform on. I believe there was a grey uniform and then a darker second uniform that everyone was allergic to, is this correct?

The "checks" are definitely the most (maybe the only?) unique thing about the uniforms. The "checked" blouses look good by themselves, but the look gets very "busy" when the scarves are added. Are the FA's allowed to omit the scarves during every-day wear?
