Kuwait Airways to Order New Airbus Airplanes

Mon Oct 01, 2018 8:53 pm

Kuwait national flag carrier will be making new order from Airbus according to the company’s chairman.
He also mentioned that all leased airplanes will be out service.
Any guess on which planes will be ordered? I think the English version of the article has some mistranslation, total number of fleet will be 38 instead of new order of 38 planes.

Strange, most of there current fleet is young. And they already have 25 aircraft on order.

Replace the leased planes? This is the current KU fleet matrix:

1 Airbus A319 - VIP government use only
11 Airbus A320s---4 owned (1 VIP government use only, the other 3 are nearly 28 years old), 7 leased (5 from Macquarie Bank, 2 from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise)
5 Airbus A330-200s at 238t (all leased from IAFC, a joint venture between Airbus and GCC banks)
2 Airbus A340-500s at 372t (VIP government use only - third- and second-to-last A340s built)
1 Boeing 737-900ER(BBJ3) (VIP government use only)
1 Boeing 747-400 combi (VIP and airline use)
1 Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental (VIP government use only)
10 Boeing 777-300ER (6 owned directly, 4 leased from ALAFCO - itself majority-controlled by the Kuwait government, including a 10 percent stake by KU itself). ALAFCO was originally a division of KU.

I could see the leased A320s leaving and the owned ones would be nearing 30 years old by time of replacement.

I could see somewhere around 12 A321neo, 2 ACJ320neo (VIP), 8 A330-900neo at 251t, 7 A350-900XWB at 280t and 9 A350-1000XWB at 316t (2 for VIP use). The 77Ws titled to KU directly could have the titles transferred to ALAFCO with that fleet put up for lease. (The VIP fleet would then be the B748, 2 ACJ20N, 2 A345, 2 A35K, and 1 B739(BBJ3).) This would make KU an all-Airbus operator on the revenue side and have it with one of the newest fleets in the region---for a good while, it had the oldest fleet in the region not counting Iran.

The first aircraft featuring the new livery was their first 777-300ER in october 2016.

I say either more A350s or some A330NEOs.

The arabic version states that an order with Airbus will be made in 2 weeks. All leased frames will be phased out, and the total number of the new fleet will be 38 ( no distinction between narrow and wide was mentioned) .. All this is part of development plan by the year 2026

Actually stripping out the VIP fleet, KU fleet isn't really big, but they are known to run their fleet to the ground before replacement is considered. There 300/A310/B772/A343 are retired permanently or partially only recently.

A333/B77W to be retained- 15
Older A320 to be retired- 3
Newer A320 to be retained- 7
744 to be retired- 1
26 in fleet now.

Are they planning to get rid of all newer A320 since they are all leased (and 3 older A320ceo) and buy new ones? This seems bizarre.....

According to Alanba newspaper (Kuwaiti paper), they modified the previous order by dropping 5 A350's and adding 3 more A320Neo's. So the new order consists of 5 A350's and 23 A320Neo's. Link below (in Arabic):

In most airports in the region the hub airline controls a large market share. KU doesn’t as I think last I check KU is only 30 to 35% of the passenger market.

Last year 13.75 million passengers used Kuwait airport. Numbers are up every month this year with expectations airport will hit 15.5 million passengers.

Airlines keep using larger planes into Kuwait:

Qatar has 9 dailies using 777/787/350.
Emirates 6 dailies 777/380
Egypt 4 dailies to Cairo 320/777/330
Luftansa will use their 340 instead of the 330
BA will use the 747 again for winter

India market has added Jazeera and Indigo with Vistara looking to add Kuwait next year (which means India and Kuwait needs to update their capacity)

I'm assuming they will have deliveries to coincide with the opening of KWI T2.

If its true that the leased (and certainly the old) planes will be replaced, then 4 77Ws, 5 A330s and 7 A320s will have to leave the fleet (plus the single 744 and the 3 old A320s).

I am really surprised they are still using 3 old 320s. To have that old of a product gets me worried to fly KU regionally.

Kuwait airways swapped 5 A350-900 to 5 A330-900neos and orderd the 3 additional A320neo’s so the order is 5 A350-900 5A330-900neo 18 A320neos, As for the 3 Old A320’s they are well maintained and served! Will be retired first quarter of 2019 with A320neo’s

It’s not about maintaining the planes. KU does a great job buy the internal product.

Also, I think 18 320neo’s are too much. They will need more widebodies in my opinion.

For a small country, they sure have a lot of VIP/government aircraft!

Not sure of which one is accurate
Kuwait Airways defining with Airbus the models & quantities of a new Order.

#5 A350-1000 (+8 A330neo) instead of #10 A350-900.

Dec/2013 signed MoU:
•10 A350-900
•15 A320 neo family

Current (under negotiation)
•5 A350-1000
•8 A330neo
•10 A321neo
•5 A320neo
