DFW-BUR comes back, that's good. I think it was only a matter of time based on what I heard on here. DFW-FLG was already Saturday only seasonal right? Guess it performed well enough to continue daily and year round!

JFK-SAT seems like a decent add for them too. They're going up against DL who flies it 1x daily right now.

Good to see BFL get some love. DFW-GNV is not a route I would have expected. Thought they flew DFW-BUR. LGA-TYS was there before. DCA-OKC was there before I thought. LAX-TUL was there before I'm pretty sure. JFK-SAT is odd.

I guess this opens the inevitable question...what is getting cut? I expect a significant number of balancing drops.

Nice adds for both LGA-TYS and JFK-SAT. After all, they need to fill those empty JFK slots with something..

According to old threads on here they flew it for 2-3 years in the very early 2000s on an MD80. Seems like an aggressive plane for that route, but different times 18 years ago. Can't find any more recent reference than that on this board at least. G4 flies it currently as well.

PMAA flew it with MD-80s and exited BUR completely a few years ago. After the merger AA was back in BUR with PHX-BUR flights, so DFW-BUR is more of a reinstatement than new service. DFW-GNV doesn't really surprise me that much given the large college town there and flights to MIA and CLT already happening and DL's sporadic upgauges to mainline on an ATL flight or two.

JFK-SAT isn't as odd as you think. DL flies it now 1x daily, and the both of them fly JFK-AUS already. It'll probably do rather well (FF Base in both TX and NY) and give DL some competition.

With DFW-BFL/SBA/MRY I think SBP would naturally be next. I’m kind of surprised MRY got it before SBP. Assuming these will be more Mesa CR9 routes.

DFW BUR is a good choice to Reopen, lots of people wanted AA to bring that route back... LGA AUA is an interesting addition AA is really taking advantage of those custom pre-clearance facilities JFK SAT, taking DFW out of the picture for people that want to fly to San Antonio from NYC

I’m surprised AA didn’t look at ORD-ONT. ONT has made a comeback this year.

My former home airport (it has been SAN since 1999 for me), and from its introduction in 1984 until its end, my family used this flight a LOT visiting family in Arkansas. It broke our hearts when they pulled out, but mom adapted to using United through Denver to XNA instead of the much closer FSM. Of course, when US and AA merged, I figured this would be a no-brainer and that a non-stop would return quickly, but better late than never. Welcome back DFW!!

Interestingly, as of this morning, October 2, 2018, the flights are not yet loaded. Any guesses as to the equipment and frequency?

So far, nobody's mentioned PHX. All these far western cities now being connected nonstop with DFW, overflying PHX -- is that an ominous sign for AA's Arizona hub?

Just wondering.

In the last few years DFW has reached a whole new level !! JFK-SAT is a bit surprising I would say and I had to read it twice to make sure that it wasn't DCA-SAT.

Yes, AA LGA-TYS was flown for exactly one year as part of the DCA slot divestiture after the AA-US merger in 2014. Route was flown once daily on an E-140. Timing was pretty poor. It’ll be interesting to see how this does. At that time DL was flying 2 CRJ-200 to LGA and now they are up to 2-3 CRJ-900 depending on the day of the week. Also United was flying one daily E-145 to EWR and now have mainline on the route and G4 flies it twice weekly. Will be interesting to see if it sticks.

Sure looks ominous for PHX. I’d imagine PHX loses a daily frequency to all of those cities at the least.

TUL-LAX was there before. I flew it back in Dec of 02 or 03 on MD80

The 3:10 to Yuma. Seriously, is there enough business to Yuma and Flagstaff to support year around service. Apparently someone in Fort Worth think so. Guess we have to wait until next Monday to find out what kind of equipment will operate the flights.

On second thought if a passenger is going beyond DFW, this service does make sense, now will it be profitable?

DCA-OKC has not been served by AA. WN just announced it a couple months ago and starts in November so it'll be interesting to see this route go from no non-stops to two different carriers in short time. Lots of traffic between the two though and of course gets added 6 months after I leave DC. I would've used this route at least once a month! I wouldn't be surprised to see OKC lose one of its PHL frequencies as it looks like those flights have been rather light just from following them on AA.com and my buddy that lives in Boston and non-revs back to OKC frequently always takes the PHL option because of how open he says it is. I bet they lose a DFW frequency or two as the S80's go away.

No gains for my new home, COS... I still can't believe we can't get at least one RJ to PHX yet places like LBB, AMA can...

With the mega hub at DFW, none of these new routes should have a problem with loads. While as a stand alone route it might not be profitable, it could still make sense to fly these routes when looking at it systemwide. DFW is really becoming impressive!

On a personal note, I am very happy that BUR is finally coming back. What took them so long?

Most of the new AA domestic nonstop routes out of DFW that overfly PHX are to destinations that are already served nonstop out of PHX on AA.

AA could add nonstop service to CVG, FLL, SDF, BNA, MSY, RDU, and TUL out of its PHX hub in order to better compete against WN in the PHX market. The PHX-CVG, PHX-SDF, PHX-BNA, PHX-MSY, and PHX-TUL nonstop routes are all within the range of regional jets, and AA also has the option of adding American Eagle nonstop service to CVG, SDF, BNA, MSY, and TUL.

Hardly.

PHX has four dailies to Yuma and three to Flagstaff. This has less to do with PHX and more to do with the strength of these cities. Yuma is a huge military town and Flagstaff is a large college town, has a ton of wealth in it and near it, and is a natural jumping off point for the south rim of the grand canyon and Sedona.

You guys have been erroneously predicting the death of PHX for years now, give it a rest, it's uneducated nonsense perpetuated by people who have no clue what they're talking about.

I bet the LAX-TUL flight is, for all intents and purposes, a ferry flight to send an aircraft in for maintenance. On ORD-TUL, there is a very late arrival at TUL with a 738 and a very early departure from TUL with a 738. According to a 738 captain I know, that R/T is a ferry flight to rotate 738s in and out of the maintenance hanger.

Because the inherent logic being applied is that aviation is a zero sum game. Add one, cut one - which is flawed.

PHX is not being dehubbed. DFW may outpace it's growth, but thats vastly different than the dehubbing panic that seems to pop up weekly. AA recently announced PHX-LHR.. I think that should put the hub status
discussion to rest.

With DFW gates bursting at the seams, I wonder how soon it will be until we see Terminal F plans. Or if AA will get creative and find ways to squeeze in more gates, spurs, sattelite terminals, or maybe a late night bank of arrivals and departures.

Also curious to see which seasonal international flights will go year round. AMS, FCO, DUB, MUC, and these new Latin America flights could be candidates. KEF, probably not due to the weather in Winter.

IAH and HOU are both within the LGA perimeter, and DL, UA, and WN also already have nonstop service to Houston out of LGA. I could see AA possibly adding LGA-IAH nonstop service, and AA is more likely to add LGA-IAH nonstop service than it is to add JFK-IAH nonstop service with IAH being within the LGA perimeter.

It doesn't even make logical sense. FLG and Yuma traffic is heavily PHX O&D biased, moreso than anywhere else. If AA were cutting PHX, those would be the last routes to get cut, not the first.

Absolutely. For once we see a route added out of JFK after seeing so much cut at that hub. Now let's see how long it will last.

I'm almost certain LAX-TUL would have been there to rotate aircraft into the giant maintenance base at TUL. Heck, if it ends up being mainline, that's probably still the point of the flight. Might as well sell tickets to make back some of the cost.

I think they probably will be looking at how these routes perform versus their PHX counterparts with an eye toward reducing the hub. There's not much in the way of connecting traffic which can't be handled via DFW or LAX instead, and WN is often the leading carrier in large O&D markets from PHX, so it is difficult for AA to leverage the hub for higher yields on local traffic.

Vctony wrote:

PHX isn't short on capacity, so there's no real need to move the RJ flying to DFW unless this is part of a longer-term plan.

This is interesting considering that they'll probably need to maintain a group of appropriately-trained pilots (for TGU's challenging terrain environment & short runway) at DFW for the 3x weekly service.

Was hoping to see DFW-PVD on that list.

These RJ adds give more one stop opportunities than PHX across the entire lower 48.

I like the TVC add a lot but was hoping for PHL or DCA seasonally.

They may have some PHL announcements later. I know the local folks at SBN were told to expect a PHL flight within 18 months.

With DFW-BFL/SBA/MRY I think SBP would naturally be next. I’m kind of surprised MRY got it before SBP. Assuming these will be more Mesa CR9 routes.

Not a chance. The runway length will prohibit it. Right now, even when raining its a struggle from PHX.

AA adds a few RJ routes from DFW, and suddenly people are talking about PHX getting dehubbed....huh? How does that make sense?

Because the inherent logic being applied is that aviation is a zero sum game. Add one, cut one - which is flawed.

PHX is not being dehubbed. DFW may outpace it's growth, but thats vastly different than the dehubbing panic that seems to pop up weekly. AA recently announced PHX-LHR.. I think that should put the hub status
discussion to rest.

It doesn't even make logical sense. FLG and Yuma traffic is heavily PHX O&D biased, moreso than anywhere else. If AA were cutting PHX, those would be the last routes to get cut, not the first.

The growth in PHX is a new market here, new market there. But to say FLG & YUM are O&D is crazy, there is hardly any O&D on these flights, its all connections.

Sure looks ominous for PHX. I’d imagine PHX loses a daily frequency to all of those cities at the least.

Given PHX-FLG was just loaded in one of last week's OAG filings as going from 3 to 4 frequencies for next summer, I'd say that would be an unlikely indication. Even when DFW-FLG ran last year, PHX was still the strongest performer. For YUM, the DFW service will be very beneficial in moving military bags and folks from back east (it will eliminate some double connects).

You mean like the recently announced AA PHX-LHR service?

And the A330 upgauge to HNL and CLT.

And the recently announced seasonal flights PHX-GRR/MSN

Even with G4 flying to IWA SBN can even support a seasonal E175 flight to PHX

One more thing to add to my comment above regarding BUR.

I think it is still weird to see BUR referred to as "Hollywood Burbank Airport". For me it will always be Bob Hope airport.
