Zurich increases slots; LX opposes move

Thu Oct 04, 2018 4:57 pm

The Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) is increasing the number of slots at Zurich Airport starting summer of 2019.

Additional slots will be available on weekdays between 0545-0700 and 2100-2200.

This slight expansion of capacity is made possible by technical measures on the ground, which improve the safety and efficiency of operation.

Swiss has publicly criticized the capacity expansion at its home airport fearing the additional slots could increase the number of delays. Carrier says morning delays have a significant impact on the rest of the day. That's why only two years ago, the airline had thinned out its timetable during that time, and at the same time agreed with the airport that the number of slots in the morning should not be increased any further.

About 70 percent of slots at the airport is controlled by LH Group airlines.

Are they really concerned about delays, or more about competition if slots are utilized by competitors?

Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Wow, 70% of all slots at such a high yield airport. LX/LH-group must be raking it in at ZRH.

Question: What is the status of the curfew over German airspace on the approaches to Runways 14 & 16? The Germans are notoriously protective of their curfews (the crash of Crossair 3597 began with the last-minute change of runways into ZRH with the non-negotiable curfew), which would mean during curfew hours there could be only departures on 14 & 16, or only landings on 32 & 34, depending on the wind, with runway 10/26 picking up the slack.

If this is the case, I could see Swiss making the case that delays from over-scheduling in the conflicting runway scenario are contrary to their agreement with Zurich airport.

This is Lufthansa's newest tactic to limit competition and improve yields. They have also tried to have slots in Frankfurt cut by 2 per hour and as there is a Green government up for reelection next month, they actually have a good shot at this in Hesse.

What would be interesting would be to see if this new strategy has changed LH's position on a third runway in Munich, which Lufthansa was always a proponent of.

When you have a monopoly on flights at a high yielding airport/market like ZRH, you do what you can to hold on to it. You can’t blame LX.

How does the number of movements per hour 0545-700 and 2100-2200 compare to the peak hour of the day? There's your answer wrt limiting competition.

Question

While I haven't been through Zurich this year, I spent a good chunk of time there last year, it never seemed overly busy, compared to say LHR, I took 20 flights through there and no delays, are the Swiss being overly conservative with the number of slots or did I just get lucky ?

I'd say both.
It is their hub so delays are more of a problem for them than anyone else. If things get bad they will be the most impacted and the fact that they have already trimmed their operations during that time tells me that delays are a real issue for them. So it would suck if someone else were to come in and make things worse for them, using the slots that they gave up specifically to prevent delays.

Depends whether your arriving or departing and how the weather is. I'd say delays occur between 8.00 and 11.00 when landing. Then the heavies departing between 12.00 and 14.00 can clog up the airport. Finally there are a lot of departures and landings between 16.00 and 18.00. The bad layout (crossing runways) coupled with change in winds can bungle up operations.

The points of these additional slots is to increase capacity outside of peak times.

Just curious, but how many slots are there now and how many are they increasing to?

On average there were 5245 slots per week in summer 2018. They now want to add 4 departure slots in the morning, but only on weekdays, so plus 20 slots per week. The also want to add slots in the evening, but I don't know if they are departure or arrival slots and I don't know how many.

Here a quick overview over the situation in summer 2018:

ZRH has a complex layout. In my experience, there are a lot of slot delays when there are easterly winds. In normal cases (westerly winds, I think like 90% or so of the times) it has a good on time performance.

Thanks! I didn't know ZRH was capped at around 70 movements an hour. What's the general capacity of the airport?

Swiss was battling a lot of delays this summer, so they fears are rational.

Strange, how the EU was fixated on BA's % of slots at LHR, but 70% for LX/LH at ZRH doesn't.

Switzerland and so on ZRH isn't part of the EU.

Well, good thing then that the UK is leaving the EU.

Why is it a good thing is beyond me. LH controls similar percentages of movements in both FRA and MUC, not to mention KL in AMS, all in EU.

As mentioned, ZRH does have an increasing delay problem. LX seems to be justified in their concerns. https://bazonline.ch/zuerich/region/Swi ... y/26429766
