Rio de Janeiro GIG plans for Terminal 1

Sun Oct 07, 2018 6:51 am

What are the current usage and plans for Terminal 1 at GIG? I had the impression that Terminal 1 was not being used anymore at all, but then different sources on the web indicate something different. Some say that Avianca Brazil boards its flights there. Other sources say that Terminal 1 is used for a number of domestic companies.

Can anybody share more details?

What is T1 used for these days? Will it be renovated?
How is the setup in Terminal 2? Pier Sul is only for international flights, and the "legacy" building is only for domestic flights?

Terminal 1 has become sort of a pier to Terminal 2. Even though all of its terminal facilities are still intact, it has become a mere domestic concourse. You could even call it Pier North, since it’s usage is equivalent to the new Pier South.
Pier South has a convertible section, since international departures and arrivals are fairly concentrated. Most departures take place in the evening, while arrivals take place in the morning.
The main section of Terminal 2 only handles domestic flights since the inauguration of the new pier.
There are currently no plans for the renovation of Terminal 1, since the airport is currently at overcapacity and would be able to function without the gates at T1.
