FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

I think we all saw Condor dropping the Austin route at some point.

A lot of AA PHL cuts in January. Some just a carry over from last year, some not. Not all that surprising. But I still don't understand less than daily flights on PHL-DEN/SEA.

I feel bad for Condor. They are being used as R&D by the other carriers.

I think it will be more of a total shift in aircraft utilization, which is already starting to happen. PHL-DTW, BNA, RDU, PVD, PIT, STL, MSP, MCI, BDL all see more 319 and larger aircraft when a few years ago these were all 175 and smaller. Less flights with bigger aircraft creates slack with the CR7, CR9, 175 fleet to fund the new routes. I can't say where the 319/320s are coming from though.

Except those in AUS who stated that DE was not leaving and would operate the route along side of LH.

Kind of hate seeing the loss in frequency on DCA-CRW. It appears to be a permanent drop to daily service. I guess the route recently changed to CRJ-200 couldn’t sustain the frequency previously operated by the Dash.

I'm not a normal UA flier, but that's a decent frequency to probably the best positioned western hub that XNA has access to. (DL doesn't fly to SLC and AA doesn't fly to PHX) If only they'd get rid of the 50 seaters on the route... but that's for another thread.

I don’t blame them for thinking that way. But as I mentioned in another thread I had a feeling it would be San Diego all over again. Now I wonder if DE plans to create another USA route not served by LH.

The port (AUS) had announced that DE was returning in 2019, and the LH announcement didn’t include the news that DE would withdraw (and the airport’s usually hyperactive web team didn’t update the info), so there was a bit of confusion. This seems to clear it up!

Its probably something to do with Condor being scared of that new AUS Delta skyporch lol

Didn't DE re-add MSY? Not sure I see LH there in the future.

To me this was a big surprise. Particularly with other Caribbean islands still depleted from past hurricanes. I realize it will probably be seasonal, but amazing it can't support yearround into the biggest Latin hub...not even on weekends!

While some of those frequency drops are no doubt offset by aircraft upgauges, no doubt the cuts are nothing more than appeasing Wall Street who get paranoid whenever ASM growth exceeds 2% with any of the US3.

Thanks as always for enilria for appeasing our weekly Sunday addiction.

Condor stopped the short-lived MUC long-haul flying after the summer 2017 season.

It was my belief when both Condor and Edelweiss Air began service to SAN that this was the LH group's test run of service, seeing the level of premium demand to gauge whether Germany-San Diego flights could be operated profitably. Indeed they can, and against the draw of British Airways to LHR. Austin has apparently passed that same test; however, perhaps SJC has not.

I can picture BNA as a potential route. Especially since only BA serves it.

CLT-TUS going away next year is unfortunate, but not unexpected. I just don't think AA could get enough connecting traffic from TUS flowing to CLT when they have DFW and ORD to fill that void. So far AA has failed to make JFK and now CLT work from TUS. I'd love to see DL or B6 offer a seasonal JFK route, but it's just tough to make anything east of the Mississippi work for TUS that isn't ATL or CHI.

AA ATL-JFK FEB 0>0.3[0]

American starting ATLJFK hmm. They are already on the LGA route. Now JFK. Up against DL and B6. Should be interesting. ATL NYC is a large market though.

For UA at DEN, many of the flight times have changed too. Is this the launch of the DEN rebank that has been mentioned in many articles about UA? This article mentions a launch in February 2019. https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/f ... 796251002/

CLT-TUS started this year and is dropped now. Isn't the first time a new route for AA has lasted less than a year. JFK-DEN barely made it 3 months before being cut.

I'm not a normal UA flier, but that's a decent frequency to probably the best positioned western hub that XNA has access to. (DL doesn't fly to SLC and AA doesn't fly to PHX) If only they'd get rid of the 50 seaters on the route... but that's for another thread.

United already flies SFO/XNA

AA has XNA/LAX plus all the DFW connections.

So many people I know in NWA simply drive to Tulsa for O&D to DEN due to the low fares between United, Southwest and Frontier there.

Does United anticipate F9 coming into XNA?

Also there is this:

UA DEN-MEM MAR 2>3[2] APR 1.9>3[2] MAY 1.9>3[2] JUN 1.8>3[2] JUL 1.9>3[2]

Answer to Southwest?

If they had the A220 in house, I think SFO/MEM would be great for them.

DFW - HRL is a good add, surprised it took this long. They didn’t serve BRO either until the past few years and that’s up to CR7 service now. It’s probably come at the expense of MFE though used to be all mainline but now RJs

DL LSE-DTW a good add as well going east

Not only a lot of frequency reductions for AA at PHL, but quite a few capacity downgrades as well. Skimming through AA's site, quite a few routes that gained more mainline this past year (STL, PIT, DTW, MSP, PVD) are losing a lot of mainline capacity/flights in January and replaced with smaller equipment including CRJs.

This is actually the second time CLT-TUS has been cut. US tried the route when they first merged with HP with a similar schedule and it lasted for around the same duration.

CLT-ABQ also failed. I’m surprised that both routes failed, given the strength of AA in New Mexico and Arizona. ATL seems to support both flights but I guess DL doesnt really have DFW like AA does.

Unrelated, but I noticed that CLT-SJC has a longer season than last year, so I wonder if that route will eventually go year round.

TUS-CLT was also not helped by being a redeye. Probably a decent route for Eastbound connections but a much smaller market when you factor in the overnight aspect

Hardly "filling it" with a 69% LF. Aug stats from the MSY thread:
BA: 64.2% full outbound (MSY-LHR) 2883 pax/4494 seats
73.5% full inbound (LHR-MSY) 3305 pax/4494 seats
68.9% full combined 6188 pax/8988 seats

I would have guessed that SBA would have had this schedule and BFL would have had SBA's schedule (late morning departure, turning quickly and departing for an early evening arrival), but I guess this is what the numbers dictate.

The March start date will be after the Tule fog season, it is very rare to have dense fog days at BFL from March to late October (maybe only a couple of days during that time of year).

We will see if there is a winter schedule change to try to avoid fog during the November to late February season (December and January are usually the worse months).

Oh I realize SFO and LAX from UA and AA respectively. I just bucket SFO to serve any WM traffic since our dot-com office is out there. And LAX on AA is just once a day as well, and in the afternoon.
It appears UA is pulling up the first DEN flight of the day to 7:15, which means that could potentially be the fastest option to get to various cities out west other than SFO and LAX.

I think some of the PHL reductions may be temporary as January tends to be low month for travel and some routes get reduced due to low demand and aircraft maintenance schedules

I suspect they will. The ? is will they add before the permanent FIS is in place? If BA goes daily next summer, it might get a little tight in the temporary facility as TATL flights tend to arrive/depart within to be scheduled closely.

Correct. SJC-CLT started out June through mid August a few years ago. Now it starts in May and runs well into October.

Someone posted the PDEW numbers, and they dropped off a lot in the winter. Are we sure CLT - TUS isn't a seasonal drop only?

They've also informed their ground handler that they'll be returning 2Wk, and that was back in early August.

Again, this is typical DE.... they announced last year on Oct 10 that they were returning to MSY, but flights still weren't bookable for another two weeks, and only Sundays were bookable at first. No idea why they do that, but it seems to be the rule with them, not the exception.

DE’s MSY service for ‘19 is twice-weekly from June 6 through at least September 23.

Not sure why the PIT fans are so up in arms about a route that touches an airport almost 1,000 miles away. Strange...

Or why people keep assuming that MSY's nearly 3yr-old DE service has anything to do with AUS, other than perhaps seizing the opportunity for better timings.

I’m seeing a lot of AA reductions at ORD. Is this due to upgauging or what?

"Up in arms?" Whatever, as if MSY fans don't comment on air service in other cities. As for DE I'll trust their website over anything else for now.
