UAL 871 Sunday Oct 7 SFO-TPE

Mon Oct 08, 2018 5:10 am

Hello Airliners Folks - just curious what happened to this flight:

https://www.flightradar24.com/UAL871/1e228767

Looks like it took off late, flew over the Pacific for a bit, then returned to SFO - now seems to be sitting on a taxiway at SFO. Any SFO folks have an inside scoop?

Is that aircraft N2135U? Is so, it was doing a demo flight for Fleet Week for Saturday and Sunday. There is video of it on YouTube. By the way, N2135U has the new Premium Economy seats.

Got it - hope that doesn't account for too much yelling at the counter when they get there.

I haven't arrived at work yet and this did a return to field after I left work yesterday so I don't know the exact reason UA871 did a return to field but the original delay was maintenance related.

No the two flights are not related UA47 FRA-IAH returned to the gate because the number 2 engine wouldn't start. The flight crew extended to max CCO however because of the extended delay then lengthy taxi out time afterwards they were only legal to fly to EWR. Instead of canceling UA elected to operate UA47 FRA-EWR-IAH. A full recrew took place in EWR.

Then there was also UA984 CDG-SFO which canceled because on somewhere on approach into CDG the aircraft was struck by lightening 16 times. Maintenance at CDG found damage when the aircraft arrived although the overall damage was relatively minor a full inspection and repairs had to be made before the aircraft could take to the skies again. In this case the flight crew agree to extend to max CCO but once maintenance revealed they had found 16 different strike points on the aircraft with some damage, the required inspection and repairs once finished meant the crew would not be legal to cross the Atlantic. Resulting in UA984 being canceled and an extra section operating today as UA2812. Even todays flight UA984 10/8 was delayed, the aircraft used for todays flight (nose number 2828) was the aircraft that was struck by lightening on yesterday.

Looking at the updated report the flight return for a 12,000 pound fuel imbalance which developed once in the air. According to the report the captain suspected a faulty read out and was patched in with dispatch and TOMC they all were troubleshooting the problem when it became clear they would not be able to rectify this in the air the only option was to return to SFO just in case the fuel readout was correct at which point you may be dealing with a fuel leak.

Great update Jay - thanks!

I suspect however, the a/c was only struck once, resulting in the tell tale "swept strike points" that you later alluded to.

Then there was also UA984 CDG-SFO which canceled because on somewhere on approach into CDG the aircraft was struck by lightening 16 times.
