WestJet B787-9 Routes

Tue Oct 09, 2018 6:34 pm

As some may know, WestJet is to announce its first B787-9 routes tomorrow. Any guesses?

My thoughts:
1. YYC-CDG
2. YYC-ICN or YYC-LHR

I doubt it will be LHR, LGW is more likely.

Why do you suggest YYC - LHR when they don't fly to Lhr? What is the obsession with all routes must lead to Lhr? Do you not know they use Lgw, did you not do any research?

I would imagine there will be at least one brand-new 787 route tomorrow that isn't just a 763 replacement...how long are the 763s planned to stick around?

Without that, things would be rather over-hyped. YYC-CDG makes sense, given they already fly there. YYC-ICN seems like a a mighty big stretch. AC have cut NRT to seasonal. Can YYC really handle three (or more) Asian destinations at this point?

Wouldn't surprise me to see YYC-CDG, YYC-LGW or YYC-NRT, and something from YYZ, YYZ-AMS is a possibility. I don't think they will concentrate on one Canadian airport in specific, they will have 3 on line, so enough for 3-4 routes.

If the DL-WS ties get closer, I could see DL and G3 helping WS in Brazil, and a YYZ-GRU or YYZ-GIG route as likely.

I’m fairly certain the 789s for WJ will be mainly based out of YYZ in the long run. To start, youll probably see YYC/YYZ-LGW as well as YYC-YYZ turns for crews. As more join the fleet you’ll probably still see it on YYC-YYZ turns to rotate the plane, but expect to see YYZ-CDG for sure and probably YYZ-NRT. Would also expect to see AMS depending on how strong the partnership with DL will be.

I think not initially concentrating on one Canadian airport would be a surprise. Three aircraft is a very small fleet, especially when the aircraft is new to the airline. AOG and crew resources can be stretched awfully thin at first if it’s seeing a bunch of bases.
Have WS announced more than one pilot base for the 787?

To start I see them doing some proving runs within Canada on some of their more popular routes (YYC-YVR, YYZ-YVR, etc) to get crews used to the aircraft. Or maybe even YYZ-LAX as AC has done in the past.

YYC based crews. 767 crew base moves from YYC to YYZ next summer as well.

They have 2 main bases, YYC and YYZ, I can't see one getting all of the action over the other, YYC they dominate the market, YYZ is where they make their money, higher yield. Hence my thoughts on having both.

WS needs to be careful by not expanding too rapidly into China because currently, the North American-Chinese marketplace is undergoing a fare blood bath. It would be best initially for WS to focus on replacing their B763 operated flights into EU/UK with the B789s and once that is completed to focus on routes that are not only Sky Team hub cities but also those that can be sustained year round.

I wrote Sky Team because of the very close relationship that WS has with DL AF KL so if this continues, KE would be the next big logical partner.

The 787s will be based in YYC, at least for now. While the 767s will be moved over to YYZ.. As for routes, while I'm not certain, I've been hearing China, Japan, Amsterdam & Germany. So we'll see.

I would expect that the B789s will first replace existing B763 services before we start talking about expansion into new markets. WS has room to solidify its existing service to LGW with premium service to compete with AC and BA and maybe improve on yields there.

I could see WS doing YYZ-NRT/HND with the 787 cause JAL being a partner or YYZ-CDG/AMS due to the WS and DL joint venture with Sky Team.

Based on the Press Release "WestJet CEO to make special announcement about WestJet's global future in Alberta" we can surmise the routes will all be ex-YYC, maybe one out of YEG.

YYC-HKG would be interesting. Maybe 3-4x per week it might work if the fares are low enough and it hits the right banks in YYC in both directions. It's been rumored here in HK as a future CX destination but they recently dropped their cargo route there. All that said, I highly doubt it. But there must be about 500k dual national HK/Canadians here in HK and a large number in my office who can't even tell me when Canada Day is or when Canadian Thanksgiving is, so the travel ties may be nil.

If the 763s are moving to YYZ, then everything you said except YYC-NRT makes sense. If WS are getting 3 789s in time for summer 2019, then I’d imagine YVR-LGW replaces the NRT prediction.

As for the 763s, it might look something like this:
YYZ-LGW daily
YYZ-CDG daily
YOW-LGW 4x weekly - I know probably wishful thinking...YOW is more likely to see a MAX someday to Europe...if anything.
YWG-LGW increases to 3x weekly
YYZ-YYC daily...leaves a bit of slack in the 763 fleet.

There's no money to be made in HKG. DL has left HKG for that reason. YYC-HKG may have appeal as a unique route, but WS needs to make good profits with these planes in order to prove their value and stem the losses related to the increased complexity of this, not do cool things. I'd stay away from China in general. If they want to go to Asia, I would think they would either aim for somewhere other than China where there's a connecting Skyteam possibility - in case that comes through - or go for wherever the profits are good (Tokyo).

Honestly, I would think their value is in connecting to more parts of Europe from Calgary (and Toronto, eventually) and perhaps running a flagship route to Oceania like SYD or AKL. If they were brave, maybe an agreement with VA might help them. Either way, I would think the routes would be quite conservative choices.

Nice that DUB is one of their first 787 routes announced as well as a new route from here to YYC. Call me selfish but I’d love to see WS expand more from here, maybe a MAX from YHZ, a 787 direct to YYZ or much less likely a new YOW or YEG route!

Interesting! I figured LGW was a sure thing, but I would have guessed Asia before CDG and especially DUB! Good luck to WS with the YYC-DUB route, very interesting.

All three of the above make sense given they already fly to all 3 of those places.

Are you seeing whether any or all of YVR/YEG/YWG-LGW also get 789’d?

Any new 763 or MAX to Europe loads out of YYZ or YOW or YUL yet?

Westjet is going to have two very different long haul products with the 787s and the 767s. How long will the 767s be around and will they always be deployed on lower yielding markets?

I think it boils down to a matter of financial sense vs. prestige. Asia fares quite frankly suck at the moment. Why bother? Also, ZERO brand recognition in Asia.

Exciting announcement for Calgarians though. Finally some new international routes out of YYC on the Canadian side. The oil rout has been tough on Alberta, that’s for sure.

I Completely and utterly agree.

It was a red herring and anyone who's followed WJ over the years knew it.

WJ is always about connecting dots and selectively adding new destinations.

I doubt any of the the first 10 787's will go anywhere but Europe. Yields and demand are far stronger.

BTW, WS' changes must be generating a lot of buzz as their website keeps crashing at the moment.
