Dub makes perfect sense , Westjet’s first destination in The EU with amazing self connecting opportunities to every major town and city in Europe , no airport taxes , ease of access to NI and the U.K. islands ... great choice. Westjet really know their stuff . Impressive

Seeing as these routes are summer seasonal, what are the plans for them after October next year I wonder?

YYC-LGW is not seasonal, and I don't see anything yet confirming the others are not seasonal. Wouldn't be surprised if one operates YYZ-LGW next winter.

Summer 19 schedule ends in October, LGW could potentially revert to a 767. Best not to advertise beyond then until you see how the product performs and see if adjustments need to be made.

I would guess that YYC-LGW would remain as a 787 route year round. With the 767s going to YYZ, maybe they’ll make YVR-LGW year round as well?

The problem with western Canada to Europe is that it’s highly seasonal.

WS are way over their skis w/ these 789s. Flying expensive, tourist-filled jets to CDG/LGW is not a recipe for success IMO. And some of these highly anticipated 789 introductory routes are seasonal?? Holy.
Westjet are going in every possible direction of late ....... jack of all trades, master of none. CASM going up and niche staying in markets that dont support it.
I'd short WJA if it weren't already near 52wk lows.

Unless they're giving those frames back, they have to be going somewhere... and I doubt it'll be CUN or OGG.

Westjet's recent 787 announcement hasn't impacted the LGW, CDG and GLA out of Halifax... for summer season 2019 atleast.

YUL/CDG would be a hot mess, it's already chockablock with multiple competitors, lots of seats, and low fares. I think at the peak of the summer, it has 3 airlines serving the route with up to 6 flights per day (AC, AF, TS). That's not even including the two operators that offer seasonal service to YUL out of ORY.

Plus, WestJet's presence in YUL is weak, especially compared to AC. Not to mention that Quebecors have far more brand awareness for the homegrown Air Transat product, which has a very strong base here.

Also of note is that the summer schedule is never finalized this early. We'll let WS recover from their website crashing every 5 minutes today then see what changes come next.

And to think, just 6 months ago, everyone was harping on how the 787s will be YYZ based and not YYC based

Yet you decided to "waste" more of your time and actually formulating and posting a pointless response.

As for the LGW/LHR debate. Why wouldn't they one day decide to try the LHR game? A year ago, WS had no business class, now they do. WS's business model has changed and there's no reason why they one day won't be trying for LHR.

This strategy is not about strictly tourist flow, this about building YYC into a Western Canadian international hub, ties into the Delta JV, and allows for the creation of a business focus incrementaly. YYZ is overserved when it comes to for European departures and there is a lot of network flow from the West. YYZ has serious connectivity challenges during peak travel with CBSA, gates and baggage processing. Why would you go head to head with your competitor in their own back yard when you can do the same thing comfortably from your own yard. With the introduction of a proper Business class, WS is simply building its core network, and moving a portion of its flow through its Western hub.

In due course I also suspect those 767s will start to turn their focus to more southern leisure oriented routes.

I find the people who are forecasting announcements of routes to Asia, especially China, to be confusing. How many times do we have to say it? There's no money, either in the low- or high-end, in flying to China. *Especially* given the fact that China is relaxing their 'one route, one airline' policy. WS would be stupid to do it. Just because the 789s have the legs, doesn't mean they have to fly the route.

Any chance WestJet will fly a widebody into RSW?? I love seeing their smart-looking 737's on the ramp there; a 767 or 787 would look fantastic!!

The new route announcement is super exciting. I wish I could be on one of the inaugurals. It'll be nice to see some more use of the new ITB at YYC too as it can look pretty dead at times. I just hope the CAA will continue to work on the mess that is international connections. The link vehicle is pretty inadequate. Some more moving walkways in the ITB wouldn't hurt either!

The issue being that this route is a pretty low yielding (mostly tourists, I'd think) and is already served by Rouge and TS. I think WS' goal with the 787 is to try to find a route with a small but willing J crowd to make it profitable. This wouldn't be it, although maybe their 767s would be more suited.
