Delta’s new A220 narrowbody coming on sale for January debut

Fri Oct 12, 2018 1:46 pm

https://mailchi.mp/delta/rngf378qec?e=f4e0a3c226

The next era of air travel starts Saturday with Delta selling top domestic business routes on the new A220-100 aircraft, a state-of-the-art narrowbody jet with all the amenities and luxury of a widebody aircraft. Inaugural A220 flights are set to depart on Jan. 31, 2019, from Delta's hub at New York's LaGuardia airport to its growing operation at Boston Logan International, and from LaGuardia to top business destination Dallas/Ft. Worth.

Looks like first routes are:
January
New York-LGA to Boston
New York-LGA to Dallas/Ft. Worth (This route supposedly will be all A220)

March
Detroit to Dallas/Ft. Worth

April
New York-LGA to Houston-IAH (This route supposedly will be all A220)

May
Salt Lake City to Dallas/Ft. Worth

June
Minneapolis/St. Paul to Dallas/Ft. Worth

July
Houston-IAH to Detroit & Minneapolis/St. Paul
Houston-IAH to Salt Lake City (This route supposedly will be all A220)

August
New York-JFK to Dallas/Ft. Worth (This route supposedly will be all A220)

Looks like DFW is going to be the big test market for the A220.
Remind me to send a thank you note to Mr. Boeing.

LGA-BOS suprises me somewhat. Surely this route is extremely frequency sensitive.

The others however don't surprise me- lots of mid-range routes going into AA/UA fortresses. I'm also surprised there's no action in LA.

Fascinating to me that they are really focusing on DFW. Is that a TechOps station?
Look at sweatpants guy. This is a 90 million dollar aircraft, not a Tallahassee strip club

There is an actual article on Delta's website with a marketing video of amenities.

Yes, and really TX overall once Houston comes online by mid-year.

Guessing this is just the first round? Hoping to see these on LGA-MCI and LGA/JFK-ORD too.

The LGA-BOS add does seem different from the others, especially given the short airtime between the two cities. Very surprised also not to see ATL on the list.

Seems like DL is putting these on routes that use RJs, but face competition from AA or UA. It would become the defacto "best plane" on those routes, so maybe DL is able to capture a premium over their competitors.

I think it also highlights DL's inherent weakness in Texas.

So that means JFK/LGA-ORD will probably see them considering the heavy presence of AA/UA.

They ordered a bunch of them, so I am sure it will make it there eventually, but it seems like NYC-ORD has more mainline than NYC-Texas for DL.

From the deployment, it looks like DL is trying for a consistent product. They would need many more to cover NYC-ORD completely. Texas not so much.

Quite an interesting move here to use a220 to aa ua fortress hubs. I guess the economics of operating a220 must be so much better than regional jets on flights that long.

It shouldn't. The schedule won't change: still hourly Shuttle service. The A220 is a modest upgauge from the E175 and a modest downgauge from the 717 which are most frequently seen on LGA-BOS. Hopefully it won't go all-A220 since the peak hour flights could use larger equipment.

DL has a pretty heavy reliance on RJs to IAH & DFW (outside of ATL routes); this should help free up a fair amount of large RJ time for shorter markets as the 50-seaters continue to exit the system.

Fair point. However my fingers are crossed to see them on LGA-MCI too! They may not compete with AA/UA on that route since AA axed it, but they do have WN on that with them and they just upped their game to 2 737s per day except Saturdays.

These are some of the longest 2-class Rj routes in the system and as said eat up a lot of block time. For example a single turn requires 7+ hours of aircraft time. That frees up E70/E75/CR9 for other things.

Has anyone found them yet on the booking page? I just did some ghost bookings beginning on 31 January and everything still shows 717/319/320 (even into Feb).
Why fly with 2 engines when you can have 3?

I saw that too, but looking at the notes that’s only for the March DTW-DFW flights.

One other key note, is the percent of C+ and F seats on the E175 vs the A220.

Basically in making the change in aircraft type, the number of C+ and F seats isn’t really changing that much, especially when compared to the number of Y seats which basically doubles.

Point being, the A220 will obviously markets better for DL because of its new amenities and because it is not a RJ.... but in terms of actual seats on the route, there will be a lot more coach seats flying in these routes if frequencies stay equal. If frequencies drop, the number of C+ and F on the routes would then drop as well.

Right at the top of the chart in the article, it's stated that all routes will be for sale on 13Oct, except DTW-DFW, which opens on 20Oct.

BOS-LGA makes sense for providing a lot of people opportunities to get experience on the aircraft.

A lot of those routes are heavy corporate / business traveler routes; Delta seems to be making a play for those customers on competitive routes with AA/UA.
BOS-LGA-JFK | A:319/20/21, 332/3, 346 || B:717, 735, 737, 738, 739, 752, 753, 762, 763, 764, 787, 772, 744 || MD80, MD90

Given what people have said about Deltas goals in AUS, I am surprised to see DFW and IAH and no AUS. SLC-AUS sees alot of business traffic from tech companies.

jetBlue has, but they ordered the larger A220-300 with options to convert some to the A220-100. Delta basically has the opposite. They ordered the A220-100 with options to convert some to the A220-300.

JetBlue absolutely does not have a firm order placed as of September 30th, check Airbus’s official order book if you don’t believe me ;)

But B6 will no doubt firm it soonish.

Look at Delta's capacity LGA/DTW/MSP/SLC-DFW vs. what they have into AUS. Look at competitors' numbers. Put the new plane where the passengers are.

I think AUS is barely outside the LGA-perimeter rule, so it wouldn't make sense with LGA being the first base.

That said, I do hope we eventually see it on SLC-AUS (my most frequented route as of late) and maintain a solid 3x daily, instead of bouncing between 1x and 3x like it's been doing.

Very Texas-centric for the near future! Makes sense, and it's good to see that they'll be using the A220 on MSP/DTW-Texas flights since those are pretty heavily RJ for the moment.

I expect LGA-BOS is in the mix largely for utilization purposes between the various LGA-Texas rotations.

I suppose we'll continue to see the 717s on the West Coast for quite a while yet since the initial deployment of the A220s is skewed more East...
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

DL does 3x JFK-AUS due to the perimeter rule with 2x JFK-AUS on Saturdays and all are currently on the A320. So the market is rather well served despite not being able to fly LGA-AUS. I believe AUS is mostly mainline from all hubs with the odd RJ here and there. For instance, today's schedule has 3x JFK-AUS, 3x MSP-AUS, 3x DTW-AUS, 3x SLC-AUS, and 8x ATL-AUS with the only Delta Connection flight being the afternoon SLC-AUS flight which is on a CR9. Pretty impressive for a spoke city. If DL wanted to give LGA-AUS a try on Saturdays I'm sure they would, but their track record of Saturday only beyond perimeter flights from LGA is not that great.

My educated guess would be they can use IAH and DFW to rotate them between the hubs without busting whatever the range cap imposed upon DL was.

Exactly, the staffing snafus that came with the 350 could have been cured by doing the same thing with it. Domestic turns would have built up experience much quicker

The CR2s aren't leaving the Delta Connection fleet yet, but the total number in the fleet will decline.

Regarding AUS, since the a220 is getting assigned to routes normally flown by large RJs, RDU-AUS would make sense as it’s currently flown by CR7/9s and the route connects Silicon Hills to the Triangle.

Not for a while however.

Glory to the a220!

I understand that. But you seem to imply that it’s an imminent parking of airplanes, when in actuality there is zero short term plan for removal of any CR2s

That depends on what you mean by short term. There's a plan to reduce count by about 75 by 2023.
