FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: The data update was delayed for some unknown reason. So better late than never.

Wow, I’m shocked that UA is dropping DFW-LAX.

MAX’d out on MAX threads. If you are starting a thread, and it’s about the MAX - stop. There’s already a thread that covers it.

I don’t think B6 is building up, I think they are actually slashing service in some of these cities. It’s just that now the schedule is being extended or otherwise finalized and so it shows (for example) 0>2(4). That’s a decrease from 4 to 2 daily in the yoy comparison.

The flights are being shifted to IAD. As with many of the other regional flights moving to IAD, UA has decided they’d rather focus the EWR capacity on O&D, and run connections through IAD, since they have more room to do stuff at the latter.
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.
Airplanes don't have isles, they have aisles.

Yeah, that was a big surprise.

Thanks. Originally I was trying to stuff alll the UA route changes into the title, but I gave up and didn't add that back. FIXED.

Interesting... looks like WN found an extra 737 sitting around SAN not doing anything! I knew about SAN-ELP going daily but was wondering where the airplane for the flight had come from. Looks like a day of flying to the extended Bay area and back is the answer! Nice!

We were about to call the authorities for a wellness check on you!

Thanks for the update as always.

I’m very surprised UA is pulling out of LAX-DFW.

Wow, really surprised about this. CO/UA has flown AVL-EWR for almost 20 years, and it went mainline nearly 2 years ago. I'm guessing G4 will look at making AVL-EWR daily.

WN must realize Hawaii isn't going to happen as soon as they'd hoped and this is capacity they set aside for Hawaii that can be put to use elsewhere while they wait for FAA approval.

Ugh, with IAD-PHL ending, it's becoming even harder now for TATL flying out of PHL on Star Alliance. I think it's down to LH to FRA or AC via YUL/YYZ.

Interesting add for B6 non stop PHX FLL. It's a red eye turn. That makes WN and B6 the only carriers with NS to FLL from PHX. The B6 flight leaves at 11:59 PM and the WN flight leaves at 11:50 AM. I wonder if B6 sees an opportunity here? They have only had the BOS and JFK flight forever. Why this add?

Edit for clarity

Interesting... looks like WN found an extra 737 sitting around SAN not doing anything! I knew about SAN-ELP going daily but was wondering where the airplane for the flight had come from. Looks like a day of flying to the extended Bay area and back is the answer! Nice!

WN must realize Hawaii isn't going to happen as soon as they'd hoped and this is capacity they set aside for Hawaii that can be put to use elsewhere while they wait for FAA approval.

OTOH, I was thinking that, noting that these are new flights added between SAN and SJC & SMF in the dead of winter, as well as remembering that SAN, SJC & SMF are supposedly 3 of the 4 Hawaiian gateways, perhaps these new adds in those markets somehow will allow the etops airplanes to be moved around among the gateways. Since all aircraft flying between SAN, SJC and SMF are already 'spoken for' (read: sked with turns already) maybe WN needs some free-standing flights to use to move, say, an etops arrival from HNL at SJC down to SAN to make a return flight to OGG.

I don't know if anyone can follow my reasoning but it seems possible to me... That subfleet of etops 738s is going to have to have the ability to be fed into the network at some point for mx. So I can see that maybe WN wanted some flexibility to move them around on the coast a bit between the gateways. Just a theory...

Another thought regarding all those intra-CA adds by WN. We also need to remember that WN, like AS, has to be holding back airplanes for the expected PAE start-up, possibly in early '19. Maybe something has happened to those plans and WN now finds itself with a couple of planes available... and is pressing them into service.

WN has both Hawaii and Everett (PAE) routes hanging over their corporate head, waiting on the FAA for approval. It's got to be driving the network planners nuts to want to save the planes for all these new routes once they get approved, versus getting them in service NOW and generating revenue for the carrier...

AA has hubs at both DFW and LAX, and AA is also the dominant carrier at both DFW and LAX. LAX also already has nonstop service to Dallas on DL, WN, AS, and NK in addition to AA and UA.

WN also has focus cities at both DAL and LAX, with DAL also being the home base for WN and LAX being the largest WN West Coast focus city.

EWR is a bit away from PHL, although people do use it when the price/timing make sense vs PHL for flights. They have Amtrak via 30th Street, but it isn't the best for making connections and the UA codeshare know the trains don't work for other Star carriers.

I think this is an attempt to round out their western stations.

You are starting to see a lot of 1 daily FLL Western flying. That’s a good thing...if it works

EWR-PNS is an old CO route from the '80s and '90s, it operated with a stop at JAX.

Oh yea I live in Philly so I’m aware about the distance and all. I just wasn’t sure if you were a loyal FF for Star alliance figure Newark would make it easier in sense. Only good thing I can say is at least LH increase capacity starting end of March 19 with 747 being used. I agreed overall traveling to Newark and JFK is quite a distance and costly

With UA cutting many of the thinner routes to EWR and shifting them to IAD, I was surprised to see EWR-PNS get added. I guess UA would rather have the New York -PNS market to themselves versus flying IAD-PNS where they'd be competing against AA flying DCA-PNS. At least UA was smart and is using a E170 for EWR-PNS, not a ERJ.

I will say IAD-AVL should have been added a long time ago. Lots of people in DC area go to AVL, so the lack of service there was always odd. Slightly surprised they want to launch IAD-HHH, when they haven't even historically done IAD-MYR which is a bigger market.

Clearly you didn't read Enilria's disclaimer. He said that B6 hadn't loaded all their June flights yet, so the numbers for June are not accurate.

The way his template works is that it loads all the flights for the month and divides by the days of the month. They haven't loaded all the flights, but are still dividing by the same number of days, so it looks like there are way fewer flights this coming June than there were the past June.

There is no massive decrease.

Wow, really surprised about this. CO/UA has flown AVL-EWR for almost 20 years, and it went mainline nearly 2 years ago. I'm guessing G4 will look at making AVL-EWR daily.

In my opinion this is a win for AVL. The lack of a direct D.C. connection was a huge hole at AVL. They also appear to be focusing on IAD to the south as evidenced by recently changing CHA from EWR to IAD and the HHH add among others. The seat count will be about the same just to IAD and G4 might be better able to grow the AVL-EWR not having the competition. Curious what your thoughts are? I’m sure it stings a little losing the mainline flight though. Btw UA also dropped the mainline TYS-EWR. I guess they are no longer fearful of G4.
