Not in too much of a hurry for them, delivery over 7 years. Does this replace any other orders?

=============
Kuwait Airways expects the deliveries to take place between March 2019 and the end of 2026, the Gulf carrier said on its Twitter account.

G'day

The thing has not even flown yet and they want it delivered next March
I know it is just a derivative, but doesn't the paperwork alone take more time than this to complete? :rotfl:
Some tell me miracles happen, but in aviation? I take it the initial aircraft are the former Air Berlin units, and the -800 just a typo to keep A-nutters excited :stirthepot:

Surprising and with one frame per year a strange order.

Makes sense since KU already has A332s...would they take the A338 at 238t as well? They probably don’t need the full range.

As for slots, probably the former HA slots and probably exchanging A332s for A338s, as the A332s at KU are partially owned by Airbus. Might someone like DE be interested in trying out Airbus-owner 238t A332s as B763 replacements?

This probably paves the way for some other carriers' A332s to get replaced by A338s. I've always thought a big problem with the A338 is that the replacement cycle for most A332s is a good decade away still.

I believe the delivery schedule is for all the models from airbus not only the A338 ... the A330-800 was mentioned in multiple tweets from the official account.

Wow - unexpected order.

What's next lol? From having the oldest bunch of aircraft in the ME region a mere 5 years ago, they have quickly transitioned to having the latest planes.

It's no different that Boeing building a trickle of upcoming 7M7s on the same line as the larger 737 models.

Must be a mistake regarding deliveries? It hasn’t had first flight yet, and while the prototype is nearly finished, I don’t see how March 2019 is possible

It also seems like the 8 A338 are converted from 5 A350-900. Making the order for 10 A350-900 into 5 A350-900 and 8 A330-800

Confirmation from Airbus:
https://www.airbus.com/newsroom/press-r ... 30neo.html

The delivery of the order will start in 2019.:
"The national carrier of Kuwait also has A350 XWB and A320neo Family aircraft on order. The delivery of the new Airbus fleet will start in 2019."
So probably not the A330-800...

Airbus have an A338 already built for certification. This could be the 2019 delivery, with others later.

With Uganda, that makes 10 A338s ordered.

I thought the prototype -800 was already built due to HA's order, and they were just looking for a launch customer to make it worth doing the paperwork.

Nice to see that someone is buying the -800s.

Kuwait had 10 x A350s on order so presumably 5 are now cancelled, replaced by the A330s

This is huge. 5 mths of negotiations... I suppose KU is driving hard bargains for the A338.

Hopefully with a credible order and the plane actually in service, other orders will come in.

Correct. Per Bloomberg

Kuwait Air agreed to buy eight A330neos while paring a commitment for the larger A350 from 10 planes to five, according to a statement Monday.

It's built. Remember, >90% of the aircraft other than the engines is just an A330-200. The valves for the pneumatic system are new. The winglets are new. The engine pylons are new. Some of the interior fittings are new. The rest is just an A330-200. So the flight test program should not take too terribly long, an evacuation test doesn't need to be done, and really, even if these eight frames are the only A338s A sells (and I suspect there will be more), the additional costs of conducting the flight tests will probably pay for themselves within these frames.

There is no way that the A338 will be delivered next March. As far as I am aware the A338 doesn’t even have engines on it yet. There is no way they are going to get the engines on, all certification testing done, and the aircraft refurbished for KU by March. Even derivatives still have extensive testing. It took Boeing almost a year to get the 787-10 delivered from first flight, and that was with several 787-10 test planes.

Airbus specifically says “delivery of the new Airbus fleet will start in 2019” after mentioning KU also has the A359 and A320neo on order. It will be the A359 or (most likely) A320neo that gets delivered in March.

It is hard to imagine why 23 widebody frames deserve 3 different types. Will they keep their 772ER long term? Why not just go with A359 in two configurations or something like that...

For Christ's sake people...TAP has been flying this aircraft since mid-summer. The aircraft is not an orphan and airliners still have good life on the A333. Give it some time.

TAP has yet to take delivery of a A339neo. First delivery will be in a few weeks and EIS in December. That was Airbus doing route proving with a TAP liveried A330neo this past summer.

Also the quote was specifically referring to the A338, which indeed has not flown yet.

The aircraft that has yet to fly and that's been ordered by Kuwait Airways is the A330-800, not the A330-900 that TAP will use soon.

This explains why Airbus kept moving forward with the A330-800 prototype.

I wonder if the price of the 5 cancelled A350s is roughly equivalent to the 8 newly ordered A330neos

It is exciting there are 8 on order. This isn't a large order by any means. Congrats to Airbus.

Not much to worry about...
I predicted a high MTOW A338F would sell well. So this lays the ground work. Meh...

Airbus were waiting to take off the engines under one of the A330-900 test frames to hang them under the A330-800. I imagine, that this will happen soon and at the same time the work to convert the A330-900 test frame to sales condition would start.

I really don't understand why people keep calling the A330-800 an orphan frame. It has, what, 90+% commonality as far as parts versus the A330-900? It's not an orphan, it's the read-headed step child of the A330neo family.

It is like the 736 and A318. There will be no resale value other than as parts.

So yes, perhaps from a support standpoint orphan is wrong. It will have parts available. But there will be no financing available due to the expected lack of an aftermarket. In general, I expect the sale/leaseback to be poor on the A330NEO vs. A359 and 789. Meh. So be it.

Once the RR engine issue is addressed, I think we are entering an era of surplus widebodies.

With so many relatively new A332s flying around I see no reason to see the A338 as a failure, despite not having more orders. For airlines that do not want the hassle of introducing a brand new type the A338 and A339 if they want the capacity increase is still very much in the cards going forward.

Is the potential, to become good freighters after their PAX lives, as good for the 736/A318 as for the A338? I think not.

There are more then 600 A330-200s in service since 1998, so there will probably some more replacements.

Unlike other Gulf carriers, Kuwait Airways tends to keep its long-haul Airbus aircraft from the beginning to the end of their lives. It was the case for their A300-600 (post-Gulf War I) and A340-300, operated for more than 20 years. Therefore the possible absence of a resale market may not bother them.

Ridiculous statement, far from the truth. A330-800 is as much "orphan" as is the 787-8.
