BA 747 cargo doors stuck shut

Tue Oct 16, 2018 6:58 am

I just landed in LHR on a British Airways 747 and our bags are delayed an hour or so because they can’t get the cargo door to the aircraft open. I overheard a customer service representative say this isn’t uncommon. Is this true? And if so, is there anything British Airways plans to do about it?
Next flight: October 17 DL2641 BWI-ATL B739

This is a B747 fault, not a British airways specific problem.

It’s been an issue since the B747-100 and it’s usually linked to particular meteorological conditions where moisture forms and then freezes in the door mechanisms and hinges. Sometimes they can be freed up but occasionally all that can be done is to wait for the ice to melt!
So long 701, it was nice knowing you.

Yes happens. Motors fail, locking mechanisms can have issues or cold soak can freeze things. The lower deck cargo doors can be manually cranked open though it can take ages for mechanics to do so.

I once flew a 767 back with the inbound load in one of the compartments since door could not be opened and the contract maintenance vendor could not get it open without incurring a delay which would have created a host of operational issues.

Thanks for the info. Any idea how long it takes to resolve it? It’s approaching 3 hours since my aircraft landed. The frame is G-CIVV and it’s next two flights BA49 and BA48 to and from SEA have been cancelled.

Well, better a stuck cargo door problem than a cargo door that can easily open in flight!

I'm surprised they didn't try heating the fuselage area to warm up the locks more quickly.

The BA website shows that flight 49 is departing on time guess they have a spare. Good luck with the luggage hope it turns up soon.

Got my luggage so they must’ve been able to find a solution. And that’s good to hear about BA49. Thanks y’all

This happened to us a on a Thomas Cook B757 operating for WestJet OGG-YEG a few years ago. I thought this was because of the cold winter we were coming back to from a very warm and humid Hawaii.

There could be a number of reasons. Most commonly it is ice where the door is frozen shut. There could be other failures such as a latch or hinge. There is a way to manually open the door if the motor fails.

Have there been any instances of the main cabin doors freezing shut locking the pax in unable to get off until the ice thaws?

The information about the next flights being cancelled was never going to be right, BA 49 doesn't depart until 15.25. this incident must have taken place around 07.00. if the plane had been on a 2 hour turn round maybe, but 8 hours !!!

I want to make a joke about leaving the locks open and taking up to about 10,000ft, but then thoughts of UA 811 come to mind and I think maybe not such a good idea.

Yes, but its nothing you can't fix with a hammer. (I know this sounds like a joke but its not)

I was going to say how this is better than the reputation of DC-10 cargo doors. But you're right, probably in poor taste.

Landed in Paris on a Northwest A330 and we were delayed 30 minutes getting off the plane because the pax door was frozen shut. One guy nearby said "A friend of mine had something similar happen to him and they were stuck in the plane for 7 hours". Not sure how true his story was... I'd think after a couple of hours ground staff would break out some hairdryers and ice picks.

Pretty much happens on all jets. I have flown 4 different types and it has happened at one time or another on all.

Sometimes there are quite long turnarounds for BA longhaul jets at Heathrow, particularly where a specific config is needed. You often see if on the JFKs, with the inbound early arrival going back to JFK in the afternoon.

For example. Todays 115 to JFK departs at 1425 - but arrived as the 212 from Boston at 0640. Todays JNB at 2125 is being operated by a jet which arrived at 1138 from Denver
