I don't think this is DL's first rodeo on this route. Hopefully it works out for them.

I actually did expect DL to add ATL-ONT nonstop service since ATL is one of the top destinations traveled to from ONT that isn't currently served nonstop from ONT.

ONT-ATL operated for many years stopping a few years ago. There were up to 3 flights daily, some with widebodies. I took the flights numerous times and they were always full or oversold. Never could figure out why Delta stopped this route. This is great news for ONT!!!

That’s great news for my neighborhood airport. I’m glad to see ONT getting new destinations, albeit slowly. I hope we get more.

Glad to see this since it was a while ONT had service to ATL. I hope we see more destinations added from the marquee airlines at ONT. However, its a start with JetBlue flying to JFK, and Frontier flying to MCO.

Certainly not going for INTL connections given that the first flight arrives at 6:30pm.

I flew ATL-ONT on DL back in 2006 on a 757....when was it dropped?

I don't remember exactly, and please correct me if I'm wrong, though it was after the economy collapsed in 2008 when they dropped ATL, and kept SLC.

I believe there were 3 or 4x daily 757 flights. Last time I took it was...2010ish? I don't remember exactly.

757s ~15 years ago. It was commonly cheaper than ATL-LAX. That's not the way they want it.

In my case, the second flight, will work for me. I regularly fly to SAL, though hate waking up in the morning to take their 8am flight back to LAX. I could do a multi-city booking with this flight now. I could take their afternoon flight from SAL, connect in ATL, and fly back to ONT which is 15 minutes from were I live at.

DL also flew BUR-ATL with a 757 for a short time. That would likely be a 737-800 for performance reasons, if they start it again.

Performance reasons? The 757 has better short runway and hot and high performance than the 737-800. See SNA-ATL.

The major SkyTeam hubs in Europe all have decent connections with this flight (CDG, AMS, FCO, LHR), as well as deep South America. However, it is later than the majority of DL's ATL-Europe flights.

This route was operated for many years as SAN-ONT-ATL. Since "tag-on" flights are no longer a real "thing" anymore, a city has to stand on its own to get a flight (or get a subsidy, such as BFL-DFW).

I agree with the board about the timing, though - what are the main destinations Delta sees ONT passengers connecting to? I'm sure they've done that kind of analysis already...

Maybe I wasn’t clear what I meant. I meant by comparison to the 737-900 used to ONT, BUR would likely need to be a -800. I wasn’t considering that they’d use a 757.

Well yes, the 739ER wouldn't work on BUR-ATL, but I don't think the 738 would either. They could either use the 73G or they'd have to use the 757 for ATL-BUR.

I also flew this back in the 2000s, ONT back to ATL on a 757.

We had a tremendous tailwind that flight, and would have arrived so early, there was no available gate.

So we did some sight-seeing figure-8s over the Grand Canyon for about 45 minutes.

Not a single person on-board complained. - the view was spectacular!

Good news, I remember Delta had 767-200 on ATL-ONT and SLC-ONT. Delta had nice a operation at ONT at the old terminal
ATL-ONT
DFW-ONT
SLC-ONT
CVG-ONT for a very short time

Why a 739 vs a 738 on this route? If low yields were an issue here when they ran it with a 757, I'm not sure why they'd start out with more capacity. Is this a part of the "beat WN by upgauging/lowering CASM" strategy they've been using with Wall Street?

Does DL use 738s on transcons anymore besides maybe ATL/JFK-SLC/DEN?

Used to use them on SJC-ATL, SFO/LAX-CVG (if that counts) but seems like they’ve switched to -900s there too. Anyone know why?

They do. BOS-SEA, BOS-LAX, BOS-LAS, JFK-SAN, SEA-RDU, etc. all see 738 service.

Good to see one more East Coast option for ONT! The only other options east of the Mississippi are MDW on WN, MCO on F9, and JFK on B6.

Why wouldn't the 800 work? JetBlue manages an A320 to JFK and BOS. Does the -800 need more runway?

DL actually does have A320's in its fleet that were inherited from the DL-NW merger, and DL does have the option of operating A320's on the BUR-ATL nonstop route if DL adds BUR-ATL nonstop service. DL also already operates A320's on some of its existing nonstop routes out of ATL.

I believe ONT airport had something to do with this route. When it was under LAX authority they raised fee’s. Many airlines pulled out left and right. Now that ONT is under the city of Ontario they are working get back routes they previously had. I remember flying thru ONT back in the early 90’s Delta had the only jetway.

I remember Delta first started ONT-ATL back in 1984 in time for the Summer Olympics (along with Eastern). Back then the flight originated in SAN, stopped in ONT then continued on to ATL (on a 767).

I remember taking the tag-on flight SAN-ONT-ATL in 1985. It was operated by a 762. Eastern did the same tag-on SAN-ONT-ATL with a 757 a little later. I think DL and EA were competing on the ONT-ATL route.

How do you figure?

Plenty of intercon (CDG, LHR, AMS, GRU, GIG, etc) and regional international flights depart ATL in the 7:30pm-11:30pm window.
That flight would connect to nearly every major DL partner hub in both Europe and S.America.

IIRC they also sent the -800 variant on the ATL-SEA route when I was dummy booking on Delta for any future options when I get a chance to head to Seattle in a year or two. Back on topic, really excited for the south to have more options! Ontario is really beautiful down there!

The the W/B flight from ATL connects with CI service to TPE, and the late departure from ONT allows connections from CI from TPE..

They do, but tech stops happen here and there, especially if they're forced to depart from Runway 8/26. You'll see the BUR-JFK flights stop in ABQ or something for fuel.
