Hawaiian Flight 37 (A-321) from SAN to OGG made an emergency landing at OAK today.
Anybody have info on whats going on?

It's a brand new A321 so wouldn't surprise me if there was an issue there.

Just my speculation. Correct me if I am wrong. The aircraft was FULLY loaded and encountered STRONG head winds and did not have the fuel reserves to complete the trip.

OAK routing is ~200 miles shorter.

Based on the statement of the flight not being able to make the crossing, there is a good chance that there was an ETOPS system failure. Instead of flying circles for hours burning of gas and further limiting crew daily flying time, declaring an emergency so you can land overweight is often a better way to get the plane on the ground quicker so maintenance can look at it or an equipment swap made even if the actual problem isnt a pressing emergency. The overweight landing inspections are not usually that intensive or restrictive.

So they diverted to OAK for the OAK-OGG segment length and not because OAK was closer than SAN at the time of diversion? In other words, not an emergency.

KOAK has HA maint and HA would have, of course, conferred with DD and MM before a point of landing decision was made.
