China Eastern possibly adding Xian-Madrid flights starting this Winter 2018

Wed Oct 24, 2018 8:16 pm

China Eastern is looking to increase frequencies on its Shanghai- Madrid service by adding more frequencies , these additional flights will stop in Xian on their way to Madrid.
Being Xian a new destination served from Madrid.
Recently China Southern asked for permission to start a daily non-stop service Guangzhou-Madrid to begin March 2019. This flight is be operated on a330 or 777. Guangzhou is also a new destination served from Madrid.
With the additions of these two cities , there will be about 8 or 9 cities in China served out of Madrid.

00:10 UTC+8, 2018-10-24
"China Eastern Airlines will increase its transport capacity by 12 percent from Sunday to cater for the winter travel rush.
The Shanghai-based carrier will operate new international flights during the winter flight season between Pudong and London (Gatwick Airport) as well as Pudong and Madrid (stopping in Xi’an in northwest Shaanxi Province).
It will also reopen flights between Shanghai and Clark in Philippines as well as Shanghai and Cairns in Australia."

Interesting, probably a nice addition to MAD's network. I wonder if the China-MAD market is begginng to have overcapacity.

This would potentially be Madrid's 8th destination in Greater China!

Maybe it wont work, who knows, but saying Spain-China market has overcapacity with a population of more than 1200 million people, for me Its not the right word. There Is a big community ni Madrid and tourism in both ends Is getting bigger....so who knows.

From XIY alone the European destinations are:
MU: SVO, LED, PRG and now MAD
GS: LHR
HU: CDG, FCO
AY: HEL
Y8 (cargo): AMS

FRA, IST and AMS (passenger) should be next for XIY. Given that PRG (a smaller city) is there, BRU, OSL or ZRH might work.

PRG is a "smaller city" but it is a huge destination for Asian tourists.

If XIY and CAN are confirmed for MAD, I guess the next most probable destinations would be Chongqing, Nanjing or Xiamen.

Speaking of which, I wonder if TPE could see a link to Spain in the future?

How huge? In China there are only PEK, PVG, CTU and XIY served from PRG direct. Wouldn't there be more flights from the likes of CAN, CKG, SZX and HGH (flown by, say, GS/JD) if PRG were really that huge in China?

Of course, outside China, you have OK's only longhaul flight, PRG-ICN (which KE also flies), but how popular is it with Koreans? Is PRG also popular enough among Japanese tourists to sustain an NRT/HND-PRG in the future?

MAD is the largest airport in Europe without connection to TPE. So why not.

So interesting xian has this much international service. It’s not exactly booming town or have a lot of wealth.

Having the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor probably helps.

How do you count 9? I count eight. Btw I have put the start date of each route. Only 3 years ago there was only 1 link between Madrid and Greater China.

2007/03 - Beijing
2016/06 - Hong Kong
2016/10 (both IB and MU) - Shanghai
2016/11 - Chengdu
2016/11 - Hangzhou
2018/03 - Shenzhen
2018 (TBC) Xi'An
2019 (TBC) Guangzhou

Subsidies help :scratchchin: :scratchchin:

XIY is a nice hub for western China, though, along with the Zhongyuan region overall. It's the 3rd largest "hub" city (SHA/PVG being #1, KMG being #2) for MU, who has to split its western Chinese hub between KMG to the south and XIY to the north (CTU is the western hub for CA while CKG arguably is for CZ).

Xi'an itself also has some tourism draw. Overrated or not, Terracotta Warriors is still a draw for tourists, as is all the remnant of Xi'an being the ancient capital of China (i.e. the city walls, the two Goose Pagodas, etc.).

It makes sense to be a hub in China given its location. Still, it’s just such a dumpster of a place to go. Well I guess that part applies to much of western china.

As per MIDT 2017 data it's BKK by a very large margin (100K indirect passengers) and then around 20-30K pax you got SIN, SYD, KUL, HAN, CAN, IKA, MCO and LAS.

San Francisco is only seasonal and I think Houston is not served by anyone, so for me those are the largest unserved market, and I don't think we will see IB starting any of the ones mentioned, BKK, TPE, KUL, BOM, SIN... The one I think we could see IB starting one day is PEK, few years back IB decided to start PVG and NRT over PEK but I think PEK is the most reasonable of all.
Maybe we will see TG starting again BKK-MAD or SQ SIN-MAD one day.

SFO served seasonally and the rest of the year through one connection in the multiple Spain- USA flights its not totally underserved..on the contrary BKK which is a no brainer to me ( cant understand why IB or TG dont open the route) or BOM with no flights at all and a much bigger population is underserved.
