Jetblue A320 refurbish thread

Thu Oct 25, 2018 12:23 am

With the A320 refurbishment going on now at B6 I thought it would be a nice place to have a thread to be able to track what tails have gone through the mod and what ones are in it. The modification brings the total seats to 162 on the 320 up from 150 while completely gutting the interiors to match the 321s. Starting sometime in 2019 a phase 2 will start with the 320s by receiving a new seat, new TV system and WiFi. Jetblue expects to have about 20 320s done by years end completed with the phase 1 restyling before going to phase 2.

Current tails;

Are these refurbishments happening at Mobile (BFM)? There seem to be a lot of A320 JetBlue Ferry Flights happening, unless they are actually just Revenue flights.

I honestly don’t know where the modification is done. Some might be done in BFM, others I think get done in GSO and with the case of 621 it might of been done in SAL as that plane came back into service on 10/22

What is included in phase 1 other than more seats? Lavs, carpet, walls/ceilings, bins?

Everything! New bins, window shades, mood lights, PSU, galley, carpet, in-seat power. They are literally taking everything out and replacing it. They look like brand new planes on the inside.

They are all done with the GSO work. HAECO moved the retrofits down to the facility in LCQ. I think the BFM flights are paint, unrelated to the cabin retrofits.

Last I heard these 20 phase 1 planes are not planned to get the viasat2 flyfi, and therefore won’t ever get coverage in the Caribbean, as the phase 2 planes will. I sure hope the 321s and phase 1 planes end up getting it, or get used on lower 48 flights only...but I’m not optimistic. It’s a long flight as a passenger over the water with no WiFi. Also, while I like the look and durability of the 321’s and phase 1 seats, I don’t like the rubber feel and lack of breathability the faux leather offers. Transcons in those seats are brutal. The old beat up leather is a lot more comfortable. Maybe the phase 2 material will be nicer. Just my unsolicited $.02 on the restyling.

No, BFM is where a paint line is. VT-MAE is not being used for this mod. HAECO LCQ and AEROMAN SAL are performing the mods

Changing Weber or Recaro seats to B/E seats, installation of Spaceflex lav/galley in aft, new galley and service station in the forward section, refresh forward lav, all new ceiling panels, sidewall panels, overhead bins, cabin lighting, PSUs, upgrade from LiveTV 2 to LiveTV 4 (and soon the Avant system instead), basically we bring it down to a beer can on the inside and redo everything. We just released N621JB a few days ago from SAL, N580JB just came in last night, will be there for about a month. I should be down there to see her leave too. I'm on the mod team down there.

Will tail 503 be getting the mod done at some point?

N503JB just had an HMV without the mod, N504JB and N505JB are in HMV now also without the mod so I'm really not sure. I doubt it though.

Any pics out there? Or is it effectively the same interior as the current 321s?

Great going B6, this is WAY too complicated. So it sounds like there will be A320's/A321's flying around in with the old product, Phase 1, and Phase 2 all at the same time? Why not just wait for "Phase 2"?

I hope they get to N709JB fast, I flew on it last Nov. ('17) and it was is horrible shape: the seat had tears, the tray table arm was broken, and the arm rest could be moved an inch+ in either direction! Plus had the original card swipes which did not fit witht ht ehigh tech image of it's scheme.

it looks like waiting for Phase 2 would have meant a 9-month delay without the revenue from the extra seats.

Unfortunately the 7 series A320s (I believe tails 703 and up) will be among the last batch to get the modification.

They had to do something. The phase 2 seat apparently wasn’t ready for rollout and they wanted to get cracking according to the COO. And, the current 321 fleet is outfitted with the same seat/IFE as the PH1 planes, so it’s not like the phase 1 seat is a unique/rare/inconsistent product for the fleet going forward. The 20 or so phase 1 320s (out of 130 total) will essentially match the current 321CEO fleet with regards to seats and IFE. The 321NEO fleet will match the 110 or so phase 2 fleet once completed (unless some of the older planes get parked/returned and never refurbished). So effectively at the end of this in a couple years there will be a very similar and refreshed interior amongst all the 320/321 fleet. Would have been nice if they decided to change out all the seats/IFE to the latest stuff, especially with the viasat 2 and WiFi out over the Caribbean. But the cost probably isn’t worth it with as similar as the two products are. Hopefully they try to keep Viasat2/phase2 planes on the Caribbean flights and ph1/viasat1 planes on domestic routes once there are enough PH2/NEOs in the system, until they decide to update the 321CEO (and 20 PH1 320s) with whatever IFE replaces this stuff when it gets outdated in a few years. But that’s probably wishful thinking with the B6 operation as it is. And we are talking about B6...not like there’s a real 5 year plan anyway.

The a220 seat and IFE is TBD supposedly, and I’ve heard they are looking at the tablet style modular IFE similar or the same as what DL was looking at for their 220s.

Product consistency? Who needs that. I’ll settle for “close enough” and be glad the POS 190s are going away. And I hope to see some of the older N5XX series planes added to the refresh list. Management has said the whole fleet is going to get refreshed, but the fact that the older planes haven’t been sent in for refresh leads me to think they are keeping an eye on the economy/business until they make the decision to dump money into them.

I would imagine by the end of this, everyone will be dreading going on those E90s. Which is sad, since E90s by space and comfort wise is in a class of its own. Too bad the cabin will continue to deteriorate.

I'm going to have to keep an eye on which one is refurbished for my future bookings.

As I look at the A320s with the new cabins, they seem to all be in BOS. Is this their plan? To start them all in BOS and then eventually filter to JFK?

I believe so, although I don't think they are exclusive to BOS (for example I think one rotates BOS-ATL-FLL-ATL-BOS). From what I can see B6 is mostly operating these on flights from BOS to ATL, MSP, TPA, BUR, and BDA. Not sure if this is intentional or just based on how the planes are rotated through the system.

Interesting, putting them on some of their more challenging routes in the system.

The plan with the new 320s is to route them mostly through BOS/FLL due to those being some of the most competive markets.

Tail 627JB will now be returned to service as of Dec.7 it is excepted to operate the redeye turn on BOS-SDQ-BOS.

This now gives jetblue 9 320s with the new look with probably room for 1 more to be completed before years end. Starting in 2019 phase 2 of the restyling will start with a new improved IFE/WiFi and different seat. Their 321NEO is expected to also be delivered sometime in the spring of 2019.
