Not really random:
N5##JB -N6##JB: A320 CLASSIC
(Aircraft that were sold to BlueWings and came back came as JL/JT)

N7##JB-N8##JB: A320 ENHANCED
These delivered with the enhanced interior and Recaro seats.

N9##J@: A321 CEOs

N2###J: A321NEO

N4###J: A321NEOLR

N1##JB-N3##JB: E190

N3###J: A220

It's not easy getting blocks of registration numbers when you purchase a large number of aircraft at a clip. Your airline is no different, trying to have fleet sub types with common ranges of tail numbers (-700s, -800s and MAX8s).

Umm… Isn’t an a320 enhanced known by its avionics change? CRT to LCD and change in hydraulic braking logic? If so, 590Jb-834jb are enhanced. The 700/800 had the recaro seats, but otherwise internally aren’t they identical to the 6xx series, with the obvious exception of the winglet equipped 8XX series?

Airbus also had an “enhanced interior” for the A320, that was available starting sometime in 2007. The changes to the interior were pretty subtle though (it wasn’t like original 737NG interior-> sky interior for example). Basically things like slightly different sidewalls/window surrounds.

What I mean is with our MAXs, they go in consecutive order, with a random letter.

N8730, N8731,N8732,etc

With B6 I noticed it’s

N903JB, N905JB, N913JB, N923JB. Are all the four digit registrations going to have a “J” at the end?

Just putting in random inquiries, it looks like the preferred "JB" was already taken and whoever makes the decision of what tail #s to accept different letters didn't take them (although some do have different letters...like N999JQ which I guess they went through with to avoid doing another tail number series to finish up the A321CEOs.). Based on the number of a/c on order compared to the number of tail numbers available in the range, they had wiggle room to get a lot of the registrations they wanted with the "JB". Here are a few examples:

N904JB: https://registry.faa.gov/AircraftInquir ... rTxt=904JB
N912JB: https://registry.faa.gov/AircraftInquir ... rTxt=912JB
N920JB: https://registry.faa.gov/AircraftInquir ... rTxt=920JB

Hell, in college I flew a C152 with tail N757AA...you would think that would be a B757 in American Airline's fleet but nope LOL. Looking at the registry it is still active, just not with the college anymore:

https://registry.faa.gov/AircraftInquir ... rTxt=757AA

N635JB is re-scheduled to depart SAL this afternoon with Phase 2 installed.
N657JB has started its modification and should release around 12/5 give-or-take.

We have a few aircraft that were released from the desert here (will not receive the modification) to go through HMVs before entering operations, once they leave we'll get back to ramping up the mod lines to finish the scheduled aircraft. N504JB, N505JB and N506JB are all here and will be on the ground here for quite some time. N821JB is expected to arrive here in a few days when we kick out N523JB (also came from the desert).

So, looking at the rest of the year it looks like the inbound planes will be:
N657JB
N821JB
N804JB
N633JB
N662JB

It'll be a busy holiday season here in SAL!

Amazing to see B6 in the home stretch of the 320 refurbish program!

Hopefully when the last 320 wraps up the refit program B6 will announce a new program for the 321CEOs and hopefully the 190s since they will be around longer. And also be in the financial position to freshen them up a bit since the first 321 was delivered in Oct of 2013 and is almost 10yrs old now.

Any idea how long before the first refurbished A320s retire? Just curious if this is giving any aircraft a service extension.

I Don't think they need to do that as the Phase 1 seats on those planes are still perfectly fine. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSvtx0rg36c
The e190's on the other hand (at least the ones they're keeping for now) do need the upgrade the worst. Maybe they will retrofit the mint class in the A321CEO's as there losing their competitive advantage as united rolls the same seats that are on jetblues A321NEO/LR's out on their MAX10's and A321NEO

Ummmm....not at JetBlue. There are technical enhancements made to aircraft all the time, lord knows how many SBs I have worked on and seen installed over the years, and I'm sure there there was some type of upgrade package from the factory, but in JetBlue an A320E was a 700/800 which contained the Enhanced Interior.

Yes, the 700/800’s had new interiors, and I know that airbus constantly upgrades the jet, but technically per airbus an “enhanced” a320 is the leap when they went from CRT->LCD and changed the hydraulic logic for nose wheel steering. I think 590JB was the first enhanced A320 jetblue received. It might be internal jetblue speak to refer to the recaro seated a320’s as enhanced, but there is actually an a320 enhanced. So 2 enhanced, a jetblue enhanced and an airbus enhanced.

Yes, I believe there were a few things with the nose wheel steering upgrades including the different ring in the NLG itself. When we did the re-pack with the new rings after N536JB had its incident in LAX, I think it was N503JB through N589JB so N590JB would make sense as the NLGs already came modified with the improved hardware to avoid another flight 292. Wow, that brings me WAY back! I want to say we did that modification in 2006? I know some folks that still have the plaque with the removed rings attached that were made/given out when that modification ended. My lord I'm getting old LOL!

So when I fly in April I have a STRONG probability of getting a phase 1 or 2 aircraft

If it’s a 320 they should all be complete by then, so it’s almost a cast iron certainty that you will barring any last minute delays on the few remaining.

8% are not being done, so I would say you have a 92% chance in April.

What’s the route? So long as a 190 or one of the 11 never-mod 320s gets put on it.

It's been the case for quite some time now considering the majority of our fleet has been completed for over a year. The last plane will be done in March leaving 11 aircraft non-modified which will start getting retired in 2023. The non-modified planes will probably (I don't know the full plan) operate some of the short haul, non-premium markets, and fill in for operational issues otherwise. So, depending on the route you are flying, yes you should probably be on a modified aircraft.

Anyone have an idea of how much life is left in the birds that are not scheduled to get the refit? There are other 320s out there that are approaching 30yrs of service. B6’s oldest 320 N503 is 22yrs old. I know B6 has always run a hot operation/fleet utilization so understandably their 320s might time out sooner then other examples. But B6 also seems to have a fleet shortage problem and they can’t seem to get planes fast enough for what they want to fly, would it make sense for them to revaluate these 11 320s and possible send all if not a just a few in for the refresh and keep them longer?

A few examples of 320s that are older then N503
DL N309US- 31.4yrs old (active)
UA N401UA-28.3yrs old (active)
AA N102UW- 23.6yrs old (active)
AC C-FKPT- 29.7yrs old (active)
GE (Global Aviation) ZS-GAL- 32.5yrs old (active) ex Braniff bird.

4 320s go back in 2023. Not sure about 2024-26, but I believe at this time only those 11 never mod aircraft, all leased iirc, go back to leasing companies between 23-26 (as well as the 30 leased 190s). From a broader fleet perspective, there are a lot of deliveries in 2023 and on, and there will be more orders, so the few that get retired are more than backfilled from a capacity standpoint (especially when you consider they are replacing 100 and 150 seaters with 140 and 200 seaters). And the 140 seaters will be a higher utilization fleet than the 100 seaters. So, capacity growth is still good even with the lease returns. For reference, 2023, the first year of lease returns, has a net gain of 19 aircraft, again all larger gauge than the planes they are replacing.

As for the fleet shortage…I agree, which is why they extended the 190’s lives (and the lives of the never mod aircraft that were sitting in the desert) until they could get more 220s/NEOs. But beyond 2023, it likely doesn’t make financial sense to extend/buy out those leases. I think they’d rather plop down the CapEx on more 223s/321s than pay the increasing mx costs/higher fuel costs for 162 seat 320s that likely have worse economics. If they were owned outright it’d likely be a different story. I could maybe see them sticking around as a low utilization flex/spare fleet in that case.

Just me with some wishful thinking here, but if money was no factor I’d like to see them just convert the mint 321CEOs to 200 seaters during a mid life cabin refresh and replace them with new delivery mint NEOs so that the domestic mint fleet was all standard, and all NEOs. Basically just take all future NEO deliveries as mint, then as the network allows and as mint CEOs hit heavy checks, convert them to 200 seaters. Not sure if the 321CEO mint galleys, mid cabin LAV, pantry, and extra ACT would be feasible to take out to standardize it to the other 321CEOs though. But assuming so, it could maybe be done in say 2024-27 sometime as some of those 321s get older and more NEOs get delivered. Perhaps they could order kits to mod all the 321CEOs up to the new meridian/AVANT/viasat 2/extra large overhead bin standard that the NEOs now have, that way they’d do all 63 CEOs. But, I doubt that happens…just wishful thinking on my part.
So, the 321 fleet would be:
321CEO: 63 200 seaters
321NEO: 43 mint, 16 200 seaters, plus the LR/XLRs
[/quote]
This is a great idea, especially since I heard that B6 is not taking anymore non-LR 321s till 2023. Would it be too late for B6 to have all A21N’s all LR & LD for 2023 and beyond? And since CAPEX wouldn’t be a prob then, wishfully they could renovate as many 9##J_s from MINT to Y200, but again, wishful.

I see that 223s are more economical, etc., but they should maybe replace the last 30 E90’s with 221s The 223’s can’t go to HYA and MVY and the only way for 221s to go there is to limit the weight.

In keeping with other airlines on the forum, JetBlue will now have both a Network and Fleet Thread. Since this thread has been open for a few years, it might be good for a fresh start with an annual fleet thread. Link below.
