Louisville International (SDF) announces LAX on AA

Thu Oct 25, 2018 1:41 pm

https://www.facebook.com/louisvilleinternationalairport/posts/1045671658947823

Per the SDF Facebook page, they will be announcing a new nonstop destination today at noon today. There has been a small amount of discussion of this in the Kentucky aviation thread, but it was suggested that a new thread be started.

What are your guesses for this new route?

SFO or LAX:

"route will improve access for businesspeople"
"The new flight will help Kentucky's existing industries grow while providing quicker access to the state from key international markets"

All these people are going to be there, so it must be important: Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and Louisville International Airport Executive Director Dan Mann

SFO would make sense on UA given their expansion into similar sized markets (MSN/OMA). If it were to be LAX, do you think AA or DL would be more likely? Hopefully not G4...

I think it'll either be B6 to Boston or Air Canada to YYZ.

The only thing about SFO on UA is those markets they can run on a E175. SDF is too far for that.

You joke, but whomever made the point about bourbon and equestrian tourism in KY in the BA to CHS thread just might be on to something. In the future, I could see 2x weekly flights LON-SDF during the spring and summer.

in 1990 , Air Toronto, serving as an Air Canada Connector operated YYZ-SDF, just for clarification

I think it will be DL to Boston. Would make sense for the business market description and DL's expansion in BOS. I could see it being an A220 flight in the future.

I joked on the FB post that it could be a CRJ200 flight to IND timed to connect with the CDG flight. They lol'd but I don't think they were too happy with that guess.

While WN adding SDF-LAX or SDF-OAK nonstop service is not out of the realm of possibility, WN is unlikely to announce these nonstop routes today since WN's next schedule extension is on November 15th.

A typical conversation I have on the SDF FB page:

Random: Why are we called Louisville International when we don't have any international flights? We need international flights or else change the name!

Me: Um....UPS has several international flights daily

Random: But they aren't a real airline, they are a cargo airline

Me: Um....An airline is an airline regardless of passenger or cargo and international is international regardless of passenger or cargo

Random: Whatever

I wouldn't think there would be a WN announcement when there isn't a schedule extension today. Also, with the international business market talk, that kind of rules WN, as well as all the ULCCs out.

DL SDF-BOS with CR7's 2x day, similar to the RIC-BOS schedule DL currently operates. That's my guess...

Maybe someday, but DL will need a lot more 220 frames first. Maybe in another year or two when DL has enough 220s operating we could see something creative like that. But that day is too far away for an announcement to be made today.

Since you don't need a full FIS, I would think it would be pretty easy to work out if this was it though. Agree with most that it sounds more domestic, or I think they might have said INTL in the tease.

I'm guessing that any customs presence at the airport should be enough for UPS - you don't need full immigration facilities for YYZ, just the ability to have customs meet the flight if they get a red flag while the plane is in air.

Did any of you read the full article I posted, and not just the headline?

They said they want to START with international service to Mexico or Central America

"Mann recently returned from a trip to Montreal where he spoke with representatives from Air Canada about service to Toronto. But to offer an international flight, the airport would need a new terminal to house a Federal Inspection Service, which includes secure checkpoints for U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to inspect passports and baggage coming into the Louisville International Airport."

Yes, I read it and the part you posted is what I was referring to. He spoke to AC about service to Toronto. But to offer an intl flight it needs and FIS. Which isn't true. It doesn't need and FIS for a flight to Toronto. It would need it to other countries but it was in the same paragraph and same quote talking about a Toronto flight.

I suspect that to be the case too. JetBlue's larger A320s and E190s are probably too large of planes for the route. Delta has smaller jets that fit the market better (CRJ-900 and/or ERJ-175 jets seem like good candidates for the route).

I fear that the upgauge announcement for CLT and DFW is getting swept under the rug. The LAX flight might not be the only mainline AA we see in SDF.

I was referring to the parts saying they wanted Mexico and Central America first, and that they have had conversations with Air Canada and the conversations didn't go anywhere.

Although if you notice all of YYZ's US flights are to airports with FIS facilities, regardless of preclearance
