Shhhhhh. Can't you be a good sport and let the Whalejet fans enjoy their party for a wee bit longer?
Don't begrudge them an extended fantasy of 777X cancellations.
They need some temporary solace and relief from the recent spate of bad A news.

Probably!

All A380s are flying or have been flying for the past 2 days and considering it take at least 15 days for a whole repaint it's unlikely this.

According to https://sites.google.com/site/lhgroupfleet/lufthansa the first A380 will be repainted in october with 3 more until january. Even if the news is not A380s in the new livery, it most definitely is not an order to double the A380 fleet.

Doubt it.

I just checked, and all of LHs 380 are operational in last 7 days, and I dont think that you can repaint 380 overnight. Does someone actually know how long?

They also did a poor job of "hiding" the first examples of the new livery on actual aircraft.

I'm having a hard time seeing how they are keeping this one under wraps.

Maybe Carsten Spohr's birthday is next Monday?

No way they are cancelling the 777X. They have already made plans for it, including Business Class seats and some crew training and network plans. Since they are in no financial trouble it would make no sense.

That said, an A380plus order (or anything for that matter) would be great, but I doubt it'll happen.

Hoarding enough cash for 15*A380+ also would be hard to hide, no?

PolarRoute wrote:
I wish this doesn’t turn out to be just a rumour, but at the same time Airbus isn’t going to produce an actual A380plus only for 15 LH order. The A38P is only a proposal after all.

A380+ is a modest proposal:

The study includes aerodynamic improvements in particular new, large winglets and other wing refinements that allow for up to 4% fuel burn savings. Added to an optimised A380 maintenance programme and the enhanced cabin features first shown at Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in April, the overall benefit is a 13% cost per seat reduction versus today’s A380.

Ref: https://www.airbus.com/newsroom/press-r ... 0plus.html

Airbus would gladly do this for an unencumbered order of 15 frames, especially from such a blue chip customer.

These are big ticket items with lots of future profit potential for Airbus, not to mention the fact the program desperately needs a lifeline right now.

If it required other things such as a NEO or large credits on trade-ins, it probably will not happen.

Given how young LH's A380s are and the minimal value of the used market, it doesn't make much sense to do, but we live in interesting times.

I vote for updated livery. Tweet stokes the speculation fires, which generates publicity, yet doesn't cross securities law boundaries.

How much I would like to see an A380plus order, I reluctantly agree with you.

If we speculate and Lufthansa was to order the A380plus, I think Lufthansa group would order the B787 and trade the 748i in and maybe the 777X as well.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

New theory: LH is going to intro a new F class product? They could do that underwraps. They couldn't do the refit, sure, but they could do the design. I'm just throwing stuff out there, since right now nothing else fits.

Unless the announcement is simply that a new destination with receive their A380.

The big thing might be announcing the retirement and scrapping of their A380 fleet.

The image on the LH tweet is an A380 being towed away, so it fits.

That makes no sense, why would they make a big deal out of it? I mean these planes would not be retired due to old age as was the case with the B733. Retiring them now would be them admitting they made a mistake and it would also be bad publicity for Airbus and the A380.

I doubt that it will be the roll-out of the first A380 in the new livery. The introduction of the new livery including the second introduction of a revised livery has been done months ago and if I were LH I wouldn’t make a big fuss about it again.

At the same time I doubt LH will order additional A380s right now. So it has to be something else...

Hmmmm, but I cannot imagine that LH would describe a new A380 destination as „Big things are coming our way“ ... unless it’s Mallorca :duck: ... or Pjöngjang

Well, this is airliners.net and not philosophers.net but I would say that picture of the A380 is just a symbol the author used to stress his words „big things“. :old:

True.
It doesn't necessarily have to do with the a380 at all. It just happens to be their flagship.

So that leaves just about... anything and everything else. :scratchchin:

I find it really odd that a picture of a plane in the old livery is used. normally , after an identity/livery update, corporate/media departments will watch all ´external communication´ like a hawk to ensure that the new corporate identity is used. That very fact makes me wonder a little about all of this and what it is all about and as previously mentioned, you cannot repaint a whale over the W/E.

Interesting detail. I didn’t notice that. Either a bad mistake (... I agree, once you have introduced a new corporation identity you really should use it..) ... or

Well, it doesn’t matter and soon we will know but it’s fun speculating about what it might be...

Edit: I just thought about another version. The announcement WILL be about the A380 but the LH news journalist was desperate since they haven‘t a single airframe in new colors. So after screaming through the office for a while he accepted to take an old picture and left the office to have a beer... mystery solved.

LH News uses the old livery a lot. It is a bit similar to the post when 777F Foxtrot Echo got the special decals, so I guess either they re-paint the first A380 (which fits the schedule) or one A380 gets some decals.

Hey guys,
'big things are coming our way'....
- use of the plural... So may be more than one 'thing' or change?
- 'big' specified...
- 'coming our way' suggests something coming towards Lufthansa as an airline, or could that be its A380s?
Any speculation of a new interior or overhaul of a particular class or something, on the A380s specifically? Or perhaps a new base? I'm not too familiar with Lufthansa, as I live in Australia....and wish that they would return!
Cheers,

Look out for Boeing vultures coming out to any possible sign of life coming from A380. With that said, Lufthansa has a substantial a340 and 747 to retire and Frankfurt airport for one has been stalling in passenger numbers so they may need to grow.

Let's see. If lh will really make an order others will follow. I see AF and iag... Of course Airbus should throw some money to rewing and re-engine the whale. So a big risk with the incumbent economic crash ahead.

Just because nobody mentioned this earlier: the LH 3rd quarter results are due out on Tuesday. So either this tweet directly relates to good performance in the FS, or perhaps some sort of announcement made in conjunction with the FS. Hopefully that adds some fuel to the fire!

Naaa, decals or repaint in new livery wouldn’t be coming „our way“, they would indeed be coming „your way“, and really neither would be something to keep me „curious“ over a weekend.

Naaa, come on! It’s not being towed AWAY! It’s early dawn and it’s being towed to some gate for a glorious productive day. This is no picture of retirement of an entire and high-profile fleet that hasn’t even reached mid-life.

„Big things“ literally means something big - physically or in terms of impact - and „our way“ really sounds like it is happening for Lufthansa as an airline, as a whole.

It could very well be a new order for more A380s, despite the fact that Carsten Spohr is on on record for saying he wouldn’t order more A380s. There are several reasons - many of which already mentioned here - for which it would make sense.

In any case, the posts made here doubting that it could be a new A380 order come from contributors that either have 777 in their names or are known to be skeptical regarding the A380.

Another really big thing that could be coming Lufthansa‘s way would be an acquisition ... is Alitalia still for sale ?

There is no doubt the A380 will still have a future if peace holds in the majority of the world. Growing air traffic and higher fuel costs lend more towards larger aircraft for better effiency. Quite a few established airports have limited capacity to grow and that will become more common in the next 10-20 years. I can't for example see USA adding tonnes of more small aircraft with their growing population over the next 20years. Sydney airport in Australia will never get another runway. China/India eventually of course and the list goes on. I Would say the LH order is possible but not highly likely.

It’s hard to say for certain if that is actually 100% true. Remember the point of the plus program was to drum up interest in new A380s. Just offering all the improvements minus wingtwist/MTOW changes as a retrofit counters that goal, as operators would just improve their current planes rather than order new ones.

Now they may work better with the wing twist, but that doesn’t rule out an improvement over the wingtip fences with the current wing twist.

People tend grow up and from a certain age - around 40/50 I would say - basecaps tend to look silly if you aren´t a farmer. I have abolished these childish basecaps for real hats recently.

If they say, "#HappyFriday" and "Enjoy the weekend", you'd think there would be an announcement on Monday.

So what was it? (Given it's Monday evening CET).

Denied by LH.

Well, that just proves LH are just a bunch of Boeing fanboys. I’m surprised their airline name isn’t Lufthansa777, since those are supposedly the kind of folks (according to some on here, anyway) who would deny this is an A380 order.
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.
Airplanes don't have isles, they have aisles.

Well... why not? If they want more A380, why wait?

Maybe they will get rid of their A380's?

Lufthansa has plenty of new 777-9 and A350 on order plus options. It never made sense for them to now order even more very large aircraft. Especially as they plan to grow a tad slower.
Whoever is interested in Lufthansa could find out and verify if they have some logical need now to order more very big aircraft or not from public sources.
Their A380 fleet is still young so a fleet rollover with new A380 would only make sense in ten years from now or similar.

LH has 14 A380s in use. Not exactly 15, but absent of any further information, the best thing I can think of is that they are looking at updating/refurbishing their existing fleet and maybe retro-fitting them with those new winglets Airbus showed off some time ago.

Can't be done, the new wingtips only work with the changed wingtwist.

Interesting that both A350 and A380 both need such major changes to see the benefits of better wing tip treatments.

Denied by LH.

Interesting:

They have started to respond to the messages on Twitter, replying to users asking about a possible order.

We are currently not in the process of ordering A380s.
-- Lufthansa News (@lufthansaNews) October 30, 2018

The Lufthansa press office has also responded to the Daily Post, denying they are in the process of ordering A380s.

A spokeswoman said: "This particular tweet does not have a hidden meaning nor was it meant to be misinterpreted. As Lufthansa sends out a #HappyFriday tweet every week, this was simply a general post."

Yeah, but all press is good press, so they got a free "win" over the last several days.

Well they don't address the key sentence which was "Big things are coming our way". "Happy Friday" wouldn't get anyone riled up, except maybe sticklers for the English language. So my guess is the person who runs their Twitter page is one of our very own A.net forum members and a weapons-grade wind-up merchant. He was probably giggling into his stein all weekend watching the forum go apeshit.

But we had the confirmation of the friend of the friend of the original poster!

I'm confused.

Such sources are always a good basis for a multi-page thread, right?

By "something big" they might mean the new Currywurst stand at Frankfurt airport with extra-large German sausages.
