Oman Air applies for US authority

Mon Oct 29, 2018 9:25 pm

No route specifics supplied, but Oman Air has applied with the DOT and seeks authority and foreign air carrier permit to connect Oman and or intermediate points the U.S.

Carrier also seeks DOT authority in the interim to commence codeshare or wet-lease flying with duly authorized US or foreign carrier while its own permits are pending. The airline states they are still in the process of negotiating possible codeshare agreements

OST-2018-0173

A little tidbit in the application says the carrier (which is government owned) will receive $182mil in government funds for 2018.

I would guess that their first route would be JFK, with ORD and IAD as far-fetched possibilities...

The second part of that is interesting, I wonder who they would codeshare with? As far as I know, they're not in any alliance...

Oman Air (WY) are code share with number of airlines.
(In fact earlier this year Air France booked me on WY when AF flight was cancelled.)
So for US flights, code share with some alliance that has one of DL/UA/AA makes sense.
Also their long range equipments are A330 and B789.
My guess will be direct flights from Muscat (MCT) to some place where 789 can make it.
(JFK/EWR/BOS makes most sense looking at 789 range) or some US East coast or midwest destination for connecting with partner ?

Let's see, a major US carrier at the likely first route of JFK that's not in an alliance that has a lot of connection possibilities for codeshares.

Got to think this is right up B6's street....

WY currently has a broad based SPA and code share with LH via FRA.

If WY has an afternoon 1400-1500 departure out of MCT to USA (as that is when all their EU flights depart from Muscat except FRA) then it can only operate the B789 up to JFK. In the peak hot summer months though ie 01May-15sep it will face a small payload restriction departing MCT.

The flying time is 14 hours nonstop MCT JFK which means if it’s a 1400 departure from MCT it shall land into JFK at 2000, overnight there to depart back at 1000 in order to land back into MCT at 0700 so that it connects with its prime 0900-1000 hub wave bank to ISC GCC BKK KUL.

Main target markets would be India Pakistan DXB and BKK KUL as MCT p2p is quite small.

With the conservative nature of WY expending their network we will probably see codeshare agreements when/if the US gov't approves the application. If things work well then maybe a nonstop to IAD, NYC airport.

I can image they'd like a slice of the NYC-South Asia market. So NYC would be a good start for them.

Finally! Hope the route will be MCT-JFK. Been waiting for WY to start JFK service; Oman has been on my list for years but I keep bypassing it to visit counties I can get to non-stop from my hometown airports (JFK/EWR/LGA)

WY has an outstanding J product, and great J fares. Savvy move by WY ... if a bit late to the scissor hub strategy.

Codeshare does not need to be with a US carrier. The application also states foreign.
So yes B6 might make sense if there is a JFK flight one day, but initially could very well be a foreign carrier that connects to WY flight from Muscat for onward service to the US.

I could see WY add codeshare to USA with someone like LH or KLM first as they already have existing codeshare relations with these carriers. Also would not be shocked to see if this partner turns out to be EY or QR as they codeshare to Europe, Australia and Asia with these two also already.

Another prestige route by a government-owned carrier that doesn't need to be and shouldn't be flown.

Well it's basically a lock that the first US route will be JFK. After that (if there's more than 1 route), I'm not really sure. Probably IAD or maybe BOS.

They should join One World, since they are working with QR alot. Star Alliance would also be nice.

Why would OneWorld or Star (or SkyTeam for that matter) want them? ...what does WY bring to the table that they don't already have plenty of?

What if the carrier and route stimulates economic and social development? Not always about profit, why do carriers, and governments have to adhere to a certain model of business?

I am not sure any alliance would have open arms for them considering how anti ME3 the US carriers are.

Oman Air is the antithesis of the ME3. They can be considered a boutique airline compared to the others. Oman is far and away a better place to visit than Qatar or UAE - I've lived and worked in Qatar and UAE and Oman would get my vote every time.
