wow E190 CMN - VIE seems pretty long for E190, as they also have weight issues.

I hope they join Oneworld and enter in the IAG / QR / AA orbit. Royal Air Maroc could provide the connections to Western Africa to IAG lacks.

With RAM in OW I could even see routes like PHL-CMN on AA.

That is a serious zero-dark-thirty arrival / departure in Abuja. I find it hard to believe it'll be popular.

That gap or lack of connections should and could be covered by IB if IAG had some testosterone...

It's not really, distance between CMN-VIE is just 1400 nmi whilst the E190 range lies somewhere around the 2,200 nmi. RAM even flies their E190's to CPH which stands at 1,580 nm (2,927 km).

It's all about the connections into CMN. With an arrival of 10:30 AM this allows for ideal connections to the UK/major EU points and the Americas.

Curious, what is the plan for the remaining 3 passenger B763s at AT? Are they being returned to AerCap and GECAS, or will they be bought off lease, and if bought off lease, will they remain passenger frames?? (A fourth was previously leased, but was purchased and then converted to a freighter.) I ask because in Africa, CMN-JNB seems to be a gap in their network (where if AT is keen on joining oneworld, they could get a BA (Commercial) codeshare). At 4110 nmi, plus a hot-and-high airport, which could be a wide-body route. This considers that RAM does fly to other economic centers in sub-Saharan Africa like Douala and Kinshasa, both on a mix of 737-700 and 737-800. This might require leasing in or buying 2 more B789s or B788s (AT owns all of its current Dreamliner stock, including the 4 B789s coming in).

Not with PHL squashed between Dulles and JFK, not to mention Montreal. I imagine maybe Chicago could be next.

Montréal is purely VFR (a lot of Maghrébins in Québec). IAD I imagine is more of a diplomatic route, and JFK and MIA to feed CMN's European network.

I could see Casablanca as a seasonal destination for AA if RAM ever joins Oneworld.

I wouldn't discount the increasing popularity of Morocco for American tourists. For a reason China Southern also is interested to fly to CMN; it is also very popular for Chinese. If AA flies to Dubrovnik, Prague or Budapest, I can't see why they couldn't fly to Casablanca with RAM (OW) connectivity to Marrakech or Fes. Marrakech is an absolutely booming tourist destination right now.

Interesting putting Marrakech and booming in Google gets this NYT article: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/28/busi ... state.html

Maybe PHL-RAK would make more sense since CMN has already two connections to the US.

Last year, more than 254,000 Americans visited the North African country, a rise of 29 percent over 2016 and 81 percent over 2012.

Any news on the ATH schedule and launch date? CMN-AMM seems to be pushing it a bit, no? That's close to six hours?

Iberia already flies to Casablanca, Tangier and Marrakech. They tried Rabat and dropped it. I could only see Fes being added, which is only served by TAP Portugal from LIS for connections. Agadir is purely beach destination for Northern Europeans, so it wouldn't make any sense for Iberia. For secondary VFR destinations there is Ryanair or Air Arabia.

MAD-RAK is quite a busy route with Iberia, Air Europa, Ryanair and Norwegian. And Casablanca/Rabat (if considered the same market) has Iberia, RAM and Ryanair.

DFW, LAX and ORD seem most likely for AT. I don’t see AA going there. Sorry CLT, PHL, and PHX.

Well, sure, but ABV is served by multiple European carriers (and EK, and ET, and TK) that arrive & leave at reasonable times and give you all those connections. Possibly the market exists, but the yields have got to be atrocious.

Btw PHL-RAK is only 3,732 mi. It is comparable to Portugal, Spain or the UK. So I imagine East Coast - RAK is in the range of narrow bodies? Or EWR/JFK-RAK.

I mean the gap to Africa in general not only Marocco from MAD and the 321neos they could cover a Lot with a single aisle plane...

Irrelevant to BOS, but looking at RAM's website CMN-ATH is 4h35m westbound on an E190. I assume that has to be among the longest flights for the type. Will they need to place restrictions, especially during summer?

They also fly the E190 to Munich and 3hs on a E190 is not that uncommon for European flights.

What convenience do EK, ET & TK provide to Europe? Non nada 0...

RAM is not after high yielding customers who will prefer BA, LH or AF. It’s after middle of the ground customers that are willing to save the equivalent of 200-300 dollars. Besides look at RAM plane utilisation. What it loses in revenue, it wins through high airplane utilisation! Yields can be lower if you are operating costs are lower as well...

I live in Abuja and can tell you the zero-dark-thirty arrival time is no issue at all.

BA from LHR arrive about 90 mins later and have done so for donkey years now, typically being the airport's first operation for the day.

The departure time however might be an issue as the present first departure is a 7 AM shuttle to LOS.

BA's 777 is typically AOG for about 4 hours before departing to LHR at 9 AM.

Summary: This flight should work OK but departure time ex-ABV may be an in-built inhibition

There's a difference between a 3:55 am arrival and a 5:50 am arrival (in the BA case, by the time you've cleared all formalities and gotten your luggage, it will be daytime). A pre-6-am departure means you're leaving central Abuja at, what, 3:30-4 am? Yes, Abuja is *safer* than other parts of Nigeria, but still.

You're right about the timings but I dunno if security is their reason seeing as their LOS rotations operate similarly.

Which is why I said the flight might struggle ex ABV, and RAM seemingly agree hence the above notice of cancellation

Yup, we had this discussion on the Boston thread ;)
BOS joined the 5 continent club last summer when LATAM started flying GRU-BOS. TACV has had service to BOS since 1985 with few interruptions.

Royal Air Maroc will launch 1x weekly flight between Rabat (RBA) to London Gatwick (LGW) flight starting 31 October 2019 with E190 aircraft. This new route will complement the 2x weekly Rabat to London Heathrow (LHR) flights:
