As much as I would have liked WOW Air to be reincarnated I have to wonder what this is a front for. So far we have a café and a freight warehouse certainly not indicative of an airlines that is trying to get back in the air but of someone grasping at straws trying to keep a brand relevant. I think PLAY has a better chance of success but it's a bit iffy as well being there is o real plan to move forward towards starting operations. Time will tell but the environment is good for a low cost TATL start up as those who are most willing to chance overseas travel are young people that need decent airfares to make their dreams a reality. Not to mention that all the majors international route structures are very vulnerable at the moment.

Great to see they didn’t forget the step that seemingly every pax oriented low cost carrier does...opening a cargo warehouse in the middle of nowhere, in a different country. I've always thought Frontier would do better if only they had a warehouse in Poland.

None of this adds up to WOW being an airline again. Even the massive cargo carriers don't set up warehouses 60+ miles from the nearest major airport. This all seems like WOW preparing to become a freight forwarder, or a trucking operation. Even looking beyond all this, I've found that most successful airlines tend to own, or at least lease, an airplane or two.

So basically WOW is a paper airline with no planes, trying to be a real airline again??

Interesting development:

https://www.visir.is/g/20202013487d/skr ... icelandair

In English:

A spokeswoman for businesswoman Michele Roosevelt Edwards Ballarin, says she has made a binding offer in Icelandair's share offering. According to sources in the news agency, the offer amounts to ISK 7 billion.

Ballarin is no stranger to the Icelandic aviation world, but she aimed to establish an airline in Iceland and eventually bought WOW air from the company's bankruptcy estate.

Ballarin arrived in Iceland on Tuesday on the occasion of Icelandair's share offering, which began yesterday and ended at four o'clock today.

According to sources in the news agency, Ballarin today made an offer of almost forty million US dollars or about seven billion Icelandic kronas. This is half the amount that is being raised through the share offering in addition to the promises from the banks. Ballarin would then be the largest single shareholder, but news agency sources estimate that it hopes to hold a 25% share in Icelandair after the purchase.

"I do not think it is right now that I am confirming a certain number, but she did not come here to have a minor participation, so there is certainly talk of large sums that she is predicting and maybe it has already been pursue, "says Gunnar Steinn Pálsson, a public relations officer who has assisted Ballarin in this country.

It has long been interested in Iceland as a transport hub due to the geographical location of the country and already owns the WOW air brand.

"Now that Icelandair is also in trouble and it has the financial means to take part in solving such a problem, it is natural for it to think about whether it can in some way combine this," says Gunnar Steinn.

Just to be clear, since I haven’t been following Icelandair during this pandemic and things may have been lost in translation, the US people who bought WOW’s brand (not the former WOW executives trying to start PLAY) are planning/trying to buy into Icelandair?

That’s right. Apparently she is trying to buy roughly a quarter of the company (Icelandair) with the idea to somehow blend the brands together.

Can somebody explain the value in the WOW assets that she has bought ? WOW went bust 18 months ago, so I'm struggling to see the value in the WOW brand compared to Icelandair

WOW Air is a pretty recognizable brand and that alone has value.

The latest development is this weird story is that Ballarin's offer for Icelandair shares was rejected, supposedly on the grounds of doubt about her ability to finance the purchase.
