United takes delivery of first Boeing 787-10

Mon Nov 05, 2018 6:11 pm

United has become the world's first operator of all three variants in the 787 Dreamliner family today after taking delivery of the first 787-10.

According to the airline, it is the first of 14 Boeing 787-10s that will be joining United’s fleet in the next few years.

They're now the 3rd operator of the -10 after Etihad and Singapore.

First flights: EWR-LAX-EWR on JAN07.

Kudos to United.

Can't decide if United Twitter's 'It's a Boeing' tweet is corny and funny, but it's creative.

Congrats to UAL, can't wait to fly one of these TATL.

I believe they'll deploy it on European routes from EWR once these transcon proving flights are over.

Probably answered many times in other threads but is the transcon a permanent thing or just entry into service work? If the former UA might be the first to fly transcon with a 4 class offering? Pretty cool if so..something for everyone in that plane coast to coast.

I think UA said six TATL routes will be flown with the 787-10 by the start of the Summer 2019 schedule. I don't see the 787-10 becoming a mainstay of the LAX/SFO market from EWR other than 1 or 2 rotations.

In a quick glance it looks like a 764, which is fitting as they run on similar missions

That’s a great looking plane.

Some years down the line when the -10 gets the ‘ER’ treatment, I imagine this thing will be pretty enticing for fleet planners the world ‘round.

Technically no, Singapore Airlines Group was the first to operate all 3 variants of the 787.

Scoot Airways has the 787-8/9 and SQ itself has the 787-10

Looks like the entertainment system will be a new one
To me, it will always be:
- Bombardier CSeries
- Airbus A321neoLR and A321neoXLR
- EMBRACER ERJ-170, ERJ-175, ERJ-190, and ERJ-195
- MITSUBUSHI MRJ

Anti narrowbody-long range-twinjet gang. Long live the A380 and 747!

Singapore Airlines Group is, well, a group of airlines each with a different AOC. United is one airline with one AOC. So what UA states is correct. You are nit picking.

Actually, there are already better systems available (Thales I think ?). The large screen shows the movie while the small touchscreen 5" remote shows the moving map. Already have been available on multiple airlines :)

Sabby what you describe is not split screen...

From CALTECH on the fleet thread:

Seat count is -

44 Polaris / 21 Premium Plus / 54 Econ+ / 199 Economy

Polaris "All Aisle Access" seats are
manufactured by Zodiac Seats UK (ZSUK).

Premium Plus economy seats are MiQ series,
manufactured by BE Aerospace and are in 2-
3-2 layout.

Economy seats are Aspire series,
manufactured by BE Aerospace and are in 3-
3-3 layout.

787-10 radome supports both KU & KA band while the 787-8/-9
radome only supports KU band.

The 787-10 will have Gate-to-Gate Wi-Fi
functionality allowing connectivity access while
at the gate (based on geographic regulatory
requirements).

The 787-10 Onboard Media Loader (OML)
uses Solid State Drive (SSD) storage
compared to Hard Disk Drive (HDD) on the
787-8/-9.
All seat back monitors are 1080p resolution
displays and are larger than those of the 787-
8/-9.
The Premium Economy seats have different
sized monitors in the arm and seatback
locations.

For now I think entry, but wouldn't surprise me down the line (maybe late 2019/2020), if there is a transcon, or hub-to-hub B787-10 flight for rotation purposes, much like there's a daily B772 EWR-IAH, and prior to recent deliveries a daily EWR-SFO B77W service (of course there's many more I'm missing as well).

I do believe the initial hub for the B787-10 will be TATL out of EWR, with then Latam from IAH.

Congrats to United!

Why does UA need two months before this plane will enter service? They already have 12 788s and 25 789s, the 78J can't be that much different.

UA's comment is correct when saying they are the first to operate all 3 types of the 787 family.

SQ only operates the 78J.
Scoot operates the 788 and 789.

Although SQ owns scoot, its still 2 different airlines.

Business, Premium+, Economy+ and Economy. Are the Economy+ seats just having more pitch than regular Y. I wish more airlines have this.

Priority boarding (so you get first dibs on the overhead bins,) extra pitch and recline in Y+...it's the same Y+ product UA has on every mainline aircraft.

Premium Plus is UAs Premium Economy class. UA hasn't formally launched it yet and won't until it's on enough aircraft. For the moment if you book on an aircraft that has Premium Plus seats they are being sold as Economy Plus.

Proving/training/ familiarization flights... visits to all the hubs so employees can ooh and ah at all the new bells and whistles. Will likely do a number of substitutions on live flights before the ‘official’ start date. There will be three, perhaps four, delivered by then.

Technically no, Singapore Airlines Group was the first to operate all 3 variants of the 787.

Scoot Airways has the 787-8/9 and SQ itself has the 787-10

CEO of Boeing, Kevin McAllister said it at 5:50 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSsk58pSKCY

Talk about being picky!!! Let's just say, "UNDER THE SAME LIVERY."

Just stating credible facts

And it is also a fact that United is the first AIRLINE to operate all three. Singapore and Scoot are completely separate airlines.

At last! :D No more having to pause the movie in order to check the flight map!

Actually, there are already better systems available (Thales I think ?). The large screen shows the movie while the small touchscreen 5" remote shows the moving map. Already have been available on multiple airlines :)

Sabby what you describe is not split screen...

I know, that is why I said "Better systems" ;) (Personal preference of course!)
Anyway, on a serious note, thanks for giving us the technical specs, appreciate it.

Some years down the line when the -10 gets the ‘ER’ treatment, I imagine this thing will be pretty enticing for fleet planners the world ‘round.

There will be no "ER" treatment for -10. Boeing stated it multiple times. Any extra range will come only from weight savings or engine PIPs down the road.
777-8 is the "ER" frame to go to in the same capacity in Boeing's lineup.
Tarriffs are taxes. Taxation is theft. You are not entitled to anything.
If it's a Boeing, I'm not going.

Will their B787-10 have crew rest for both pilots and cabin crew?

If it’s on the 8/9, it will also the 10. In other words, yes it will.

Why United get 787-10... many pax, small weight = small fuel 787-10 MTOW 254,000 kg , A350-900 MTOW 265000
787-10 short routes (EWR and east coast- to Europe)
A350-900 long routes (trans pacific and west coast - europe)

From another thread it seems that they ordered more 787-10

I believe UA recently ordered more 787-9s, no additional 787-10s yet. I expect they will add more 787-10s though, some of the -10s initially ordered have been converted to 787-9s as UA needed the frames quicker.

I think KL is next, then BA and BR are supposed to get their first frame by mid 2019.

ANA is the next 787-10 customer, also operating all three 787 types.

There are internal documents that show 11 additional 787-10s, unfortunately employees who have seen these documents can not post them but at some point I don't know when you will hear of an additional 787-10 order.

Early this fall I as part of my job I did go to Boeings CHS facility for work related to the 787-10 and this aircraft does have a pilot crew rest (2 beds and 2 seats) upstairs above a portion of business class, and the FA's rest facility has 6 beds located above the last few rows in coach. The pilots rest facility is much better than the FA's in my opinion.
On one last note for passenger who will be traveling in business class on these 787-10 prepare yourself for an extremely narrow aisle, While the Polaris seats on the 787-10 are not as wide as the ones on the 77E/W they are still pretty wide and eat into the aisle quite a bit simply because the fuselage itself on the 787 isn't as wide as the 777. Unfortunately I can't post any interior pictures of the aircraft but trust me those aisles in business class are quite narrow.

All these UA 787s and ORD gets stuck with the old 767s and 77Es. Then again, AA isn’t exactly setting the world on fire at ORD except 788s.

Why is it ORD doesn’t see any UA 787’s?

As someone who flies out of ORD a lot both domestically and internationally I completely understand why this question continues to come up but your not going to find any answers on this thread to your 787 question. The only thing I can say is with the 77E reconfiguration underway ORD is seeing a higher number of "true" Polaris 77Es flying international routes to both Europe, Asia and GRU when compared to other hubs that operate the same equipment type. So although there are still no 787s at ORD and a Polaris 763 is hit or miss if your flying on a 77E out of ORD with each aircraft that is converted were are seeing more Polaris 77Es flying into and out of ORD.
