If it's from a SkyTeam partner, then it certainly won't be NRT. ICN would be more likely.UA857 wrote:Why was the route cut? Will it be relaunched anytime soon?
I think they ended up replacing SLC-NRT with PDX-NRT; likely due to weight and distance restrictions with the 767.

SLC-NRT was a 332.
PDX-NRT came over from Northwest and had nothing to do with PDX-NRT.

NW started PDX-NRT about when they got their A330s, which was about 2005 IIRC. They started PDX-AMS a year or two later.
SLC-NRT came when DL took over NW later, as others noted.
I’m surprised that KE hasn’t started SLC given the JV and the apparent success of the SLC flights to Europe.

NW started PDX-NRT with a DC-10 in 2004 and then switched over to the A332 once NW received those. Delta then flew it with the A332 for a while and then switched it to the 763 which it has been for years.
I just don’t see the need for KE to start SLC with all of the connections available out of SEA, LAX in the west. But, I’m sure they will and it’ll work out great.

try this again. PDX-NRT came over from Northwest and had nothing to do with SLC-NRT.

I guess I already knew that PDX-NRT was started by NW, but the SLC route I didn't know about, which is where I got confused...

SLC-ICN maybe would be the most likely with Korean Air as Delta's relationship seems to be improving. Delta doesn't own the 787 so Asia doesn't seem a priority.

Field elevation over 4200 feet and summer daytime temperatures that are often near or above 100F/40C mean the 332 was restricted. IIRC, SLC also had issues with power lines near the runway that put extra demands on climb performance. Can anyone confirm that?
DL's more capable aircraft at the time (77E, 77L, 744) were too big, or at least they were better deployed on other routes.
I'm curious how the 338 would do on SLC-ICN. That is one potential future route where DL might see value in converting a few of their 339 orders down to the 338.
