AS Announces long awaited PAE flights on sale now, WN transfers slots to AS

Thu Nov 15, 2018 11:12 am

The tickets start at $39 each way, the article says AS will get 5 slots from WN & offer 18 departures a day in 2019, enjoy the details inside:

https://newsroom.alaskaair.com/2018-11- ... ld-flights

Good luck to AAG & all others that fly to PAE.

"The wait is over! And Alaska Airlines is ready to celebrate. The Seattle area's hometown airline announced today tickets are now on sale for 18 daily nonstop flights between Paine Field-Snohomish County Airport in Everett, Washington, and eight West Coast cities. The first day of scheduled service is Feb. 11, 2019, subject to government approval."

The bigger news is that apparently WN won’t fly to PAE

No kidding. Very curious to learn more about this, particularly since WN was the last carrier to announce PAE flights.

Good news. Would be even better if they flew to SEA and YVR as well.

So I picked Monday, March 4th to see flight schedules. I only found 14 departing flights, and none to SNA (maybe waiting on approval?). It is going to be a busy ramp if there needs to be some United flights mixed in here somewhere

4x LAX
3x PDX
2x SFO
2x SAN
1x PHX, SCJ, LAS

6:30 a PDX
7:00 a LAX
8:30 a SFO
9:20 a LAX
10:40 a SAN
11:25 a LAX
12:00 n PHX
2:00 p SJC
3:00 p SFO
4:00 p LAX
6:00 p PDX
7:10 p LAX
7:45 p SAN
9:05 p PDX

The airline recently acquired five additional gate times from Southwest Airlines at Paine Field, which would allow Alaska to offer up to 18 daily nonstop departures in early 2019 upon receipt of required government approvals.

That really is gross negligence on the part of competition authorities - allowing a single carrier to dominate service in a new airport. It's heading in the direction of Love Field, a 20-gate airport with 18 gates controlled by Southwest.

Mostly because of where I live and then there would be how much easier check in would be compared to SEA. Check in at a small airport like PAE fly to SEA for your connecting flight. PAE would be just a much better point to drop into the air travel system at for me compared to SEA or Vancouver BC.

You've got to wonder if that was WN's long game in announcing service to PAE to begin with. I don't think AS will surrender any gates at DAL, but rather they'll agree to accommodate DL's five daily flights to ATL on one of their gates.

But are you willing to pay the extra cost of that leg in each direction? Most non-av-geeks are going to just want a non-stop due to all the potential issues from delayed flights.

No one...applications to serve PAE were open to all carriers. I think WN realized they didn't have the right equipment for serving PAE and were going to lose their shirt. The speculation about DAL is interesting...time will tell if there was a quid pro quo.

What? Possibly 2 gates at PAE is some kind of gross negligence? Maybe Southwest just plain old took a pass on flying out of PAE. What are "competition authorities"? Did we go back to regulating the airlines industry while I was napping or something?

The DL/DAL thing might be ultimately related. It'd clean things up for everyone involved, though I was looking forward to seeing WN at PAE.

The better comparison would be if DAL was newly opening for passenger service today with no incumbents and giving AA 90% of the slots.

From Southwest Airlines press release today:
Southwest also today announced it has entered into an agreement with Alaska Airlines to transfer the carrier's slot access to an under-construction passenger terminal at Paine Field (PAE). The decision is based on business considerations and terms of the agreement are confidential. The carrier has since notified airport developers and Snohomish County leaders of its decision.

A "confidential" agreement with AS will definitely fuel rumors about what was exchanged.

WN traded AS 5 PAE slots for 1 Extra gate at DAL. This will both help accommodate DL and give WN the ability to add 11 more New markets out of their DAL stronghold. It's a virtual Win for both airlines because AS is getting killed at DAL and AS would have probably killed WN 5 flights in PAE.

But I'm gonna honestly say I'm disappointed in now PAE service for WN.

Most PAE flights start between 2/11 and 2/20/2019 but 4 more start on 3/11 and 3/12/2019. The single r/t to SNA is the last one to be added (on 3/12.) Perhaps this is due to slot rearrangement at John Wayne Airport.

Counts by destination are
PAE - 18 flts/day
PDX - 4 flts/day
LAX - 4 flts/day
LAS - 2 flts/day
SAN - 2 flts/day
SJC - 2 flts/day
SFO - 2 flts/day
PHX - 1 flt/day and
SNA - 1 flt/day.

Disappointing that WN won't be flying to PAE in the near future. It places further limits on who has access to PAE. May be a help to UA though. They can snag the connecting traffic WN is giving up.

Perhaps instead of wild conspiracy theories Southwest simply decided expanding into a second airport in a market they’ve never been super strong in wasn’t the best utilization of their aircraft.

Exactly. It's not like these two airlines haven't exchanged assets before. WN picked up the AS slots at DCA and LGA when AS dropped those flights to DAL. I suppose there may have been some wild conspiracy theories after that deal, but I missed them.

“...the terms of the agreement between Alaska and Southwest regarding Paine Field are confidential, but we can say this – it has absolutely no connection to Dallas Love Field. We’re aware of rumors that gates at Love were somehow involved, but they are unfounded and inaccurate.”

The above is from an internal AS site.

As of March 12, when all routes are op'ing (according to the currently released skeds), 6 EMJs will spend the night at PAE! Therefore, a third of AAG's flights from Paine Field will originate in the morning prior to 9am (9:05 actually.) Those 6 flights depart every :30 beginning at 6:30.

That is what I thought too, but I think blog has an error in it. The Blog shows a 9:05 am departure to PDX, but the website shows a 9:05 pm Departure to PDX

I believe you are totally correct, kbmi'! Very good catch.

With the way the flight number nomenclature is set up for the PAE service, the 9:05 departure from PAE (#2884) would be an evening departure, following the 6pm departure, named flight 2882. This sked makes much more sense -- PAE-PDX sees an early morning r/t, and a late evening one.

So you're right - 5 RONS at Paine, with morning departures every 30 minutes beginning at 6:30.

I wonder if in G4's mind, the process took too long. They did have the chance, but let it lapse. Now AS has a near-monopoly on the potential markets. You snooze, you potentially lose.

Well in the end, there's an agreement of some sort between AS and WN, which I think is interesting because you'd think that if WN didn't want to use their gate times that they'd just have walked away. Therefore, there is some sort of financial deal between the two, but according to AS (insider) it has nothing to do with DAL. Can WN lease out it's times at PAE? Guess the McGee services deal makes even more sense.

4:00 p LAX
5:30 p LAS
6:00 p PDX
7:10 p LAX
7:45 p SAN

There is an extra LAX and missing LAS on the schedule if LAX is to get 4 and LAS to get 2.

There is no 9:20a departure to LAX. It's to LAS.

MAX’d out on MAX threads. If you are starting a thread, and it’s about the MAX - stop. There’s already a thread that covers it.

I'd like to have seen GEG 2X, PSP 1X, and perhaps a second PHX, but there's only so much room.

Good news. Would be even better if they flew to SEA and YVR as well.
Fly from PAE to SEA and YVR?

Just a pipe dream. Flying from PAE to SEA would probably be a money loosing proposition. We can always hope though. I certainly would be down for it though. Taking the airporter bus from Marysville north has got to be one of the worst options possible.

G4 had aspirations to fly to PAE. But apparently they are no longer interested.

Well they are up at BLI, so maybe they were convinced to stay up there.

I think honestly that PAE-PDX-XXX is meant to be the connecting route, though obviously connecting itineraries are much less numerous than in SEA.

Sidenote, but can AS and AA codeshare on routes out of PAE?

Perhaps instead of wild conspiracy theories Southwest simply decided expanding into a second airport in a market they’ve never been super strong in wasn’t the best utilization of their aircraft.

Maybe WN needed the assets more for Hawaii routes?

Well in the end, there's an agreement of some sort between AS and WN, which I think is interesting because you'd think that if WN didn't want to use their gate times that they'd just have walked away. Therefore, there is some sort of financial deal between the two, but according to AS (insider) it has nothing to do with DAL. Can WN lease out it's times at PAE? Guess the McGee services deal makes even more sense.

I’m guessing it was pretty simple. Alaska is big in Seattle, Southwest isn’t. Alaska has a huge competitor in Seattle, Southwest is small potatoes compared to both in SEA. Alaska probably saw an opportunity to retain and attract FFs north of Seattle. Southwest was there just to be there and now both airlines win. Alaska will get a larger physical footprint than Delta in the Seattle Metro and Southwest gets some type of incentive while being able to send their aircraft to places they can better compete (which isn’t the Northwest).

With the AS having a vast majority stake in PAE, it could happen. Even if it was a way to move RON's around with just a Q400, they could benefit with connections.
