AA213/214 MIA-BSB going from 752 to MAX8

Tue Nov 20, 2018 12:41 am

If you search for flights at AAs website for May 2019, you will notice they are changing the acft that flies from Mia to Brasília (Brazil), from Boeing 752 to MAX8.

The MAX is proving to be a very capable plane which is good for these kinds of routes, it increases their viability. Definitely expect more changes like this as more MAX and neo planes come online.
When wasn't America great?

Very, very, very bad...from a customer experience perspective! why would anyone choose AA over a LCC like GOL? it'll be a very similar LCC product! sad! :/

Really the only difference between AA's 7M8 and GOL is that AA has an additional literature pocket at the top of the seat xD
To me, it will always be:
- Bombardier CSeries
- Airbus A321neoLR and A321neoXLR
- EMBRACER ERJ-170, ERJ-175, ERJ-190, and ERJ-195
- MITSUBUSHI MRJ

Anti narrowbody-long range-twinjet gang. Long live the A380 and 747!

Do they have any plans to send the MAX across the pond?

wonder what modifications will be made to the cabin since the 75Ls have (2) economy class rows curtained off for cabin crew rest and the Pilots get 1 Biz Class seat but the one next to it is also vacant. interesting! :O

This is such a strange move. I know the 757’s are going away but this just doesn’t cut it. They’re restricting it to 139 passengers too. Max hold 172 at AA. No idea what’s behind this decision.

Well, clearly when the only competition on the route is GOL, it makes no sense for AA to deploy a 757 when a MAX 8 will do just fine.

They will use only one acft. Both flights will be during the day.

AA213 MIA 15:50 BSB 00:30
AA214 BSB 07:00 MIA 13:50

The only big difference from G3 now will be price...

Does someone now G3s pitch in Y? AA is 30” right?

That's the AA exec mentality. Dumb down the product to the lowest common denominator instead of chasing yields by making AA the carrier of choice.

I doubt AA's crew would even want to sit in the seats of the torture machine dreamed up by Doug Parker. AA employees absolutely hate the 737 MAX config.

What yields are they losing? If they are matching the competition on the route, what is going to drive the higher yielding traffic? AA still has the business traveler, the FF base, the MIA hub. Now they are flying a more efficient plane on the route. They didn’t eliminate the premium cabin, so still are “chasing yield.”

The one drawback from changing equipment from a 757 to the MAX 8 is that while total seat count remains almost identical (176 to 172) and the premium cabins have the same exact # of seats, the 757 used on the route have the lie flat beds. Not the case with the MAX 8. Again, AA is looking at the comp set. Nothing wrong in that.

Wow, 3127 nautical miles and two competing airlines using the 737-8

I think this tells us business class demand or yields isn’t that high to justify lie flat seats, but there are some decent economy class yields.

The business traveler in my opinion is the most affected. Today they departure both ways at night around 11pm. You are able to fly from Miami, work during the day and return in the same day. Now, with the 3pm and 7am departures and no true business class, I dont see this business traveler advantage. And remember DL and G3 are partners.

Dont think so, MAX8 has a range of 6500km, more than enough for MIA-BSB. G3 operates with 176pax.

I'm seeing 31-32 inches of pitch on Gol's 737's. Unless AA is significantly cheaper there is actually worse choosing them.

That is odd. AR operates the MAX 8 between EZE and PUJ everyday, a similar distance to MIA-BSB and without any pax load restrictions. For instance, today's PUJ-EZE flight had 166 out of 170 seats occupied, a 97.65% LF

I just fueled this flight last night. Fuel tanks all the way full.

I’m impressed that the 737 MAX 8 is capable of flying a route that’s at the limit of the 757’s capabilities, but in terms of onboard product this is a massive downgrade.

dcajet wrote:

How does it make sense to respond to the new entrant by deploying a worse product?

You can hardly call the F cabin on the 737 MAX “premium”. They’re literally the same premium economy seats from the widebodies and there are rows in economy with greater seat pitch. Don’t forget the half-bulkhead separating the two cabins.

I can see them blocking two F seats for the pilots and six Y seats for the flight attendants if it’s like the current setup on the 757.

It is a premium cabin and they will price it as premium. As the naysayers have even said, the competition on the route is GOL, they aren't flying against lie-flat competitors.

What are these business travelers going to do? Fly to ATL to connect? The premium passengers are always going take the nonstop. GOL offers nothing AA doesn't.

Because that is the way the airline business works, AA sees no competitive advantage with a 757 here. Why send a premium-configured 757 when the MAX 8 will do just fine and there is no competitive reason for AA to deploy a lie flat premium cabin on this route? It may also point to the fact that there is little demand for the premium lie flat seat on this route, as evidenced by the new daytime flights on both directions. Leveling downwards.

I have an inclination that this will revert back to the 757. AA did this last year, schedule early on showed DFW-ANC on the 737MAX then once the summer schedule was finalized it reverted back to the 757.

I wonder if AA will give ASU another shot with the MAX. Vasu has mentioned in the past that the MAX has the performance metrics to operate longer thin routes to the region so not surprised BSB is seeing the MAX, but to me the config of this aircraft is not as suitable to these long segments.

At 3,824 miles, a MIA-ASU would push the MAX 8 to the edge of its performance - and passenger comfort, with those Barbie-sized lavs. Currently the longest MAX 8 route is MCO-BSB at 3,777 miles. Maybe with some penalties?

Is the AA MAX8 really as bad as everyone here make it out to be? Have flown on all other AA airplane types they have in the fleet, so what is the difference between the MAX8 and all other types?

Yes. I flew If from LGA to MIA and it makes the 329 seem like a widebody with soft seats.

Glad they are not in DFW or ORD. I’ve moved to DL from DFW, but when I do go to ORD I try for the 788 or 32B on AA.

I flew an AA 737 Oasis plane the other day. Didn’t check out the head but I found the Y seats comfortable. The bulkhead arrangement is better (more legroom). Not sure why the slimline seats are getting a bad rap. The overall cabin looks better. m2c

IF AA intends to do this with a 737 Max they need to get lie flat seats like other Max airlines are doing.

The Oasis 737s are getting the small lavs too.

I agree it’s really not bad at all. The Y seats are more comfortable than the old seats and it has space for everyone’s carry on bag plus lightning fast WiFi. Also both DL and UA have the same lavs so it’s not like that’s just AA installing them.

AA has no interest in being a "premium" airline anymore. They would rather go for the ULCC customer.

But in an all-Y configuration. American flies in a 3-class configuration (W, Y+, Y). Those front seats are likely a bit heavier. That said, if this is being restricted to just 139 passengers, it would make more sense to fly an A319 (with 128 seats) on MIA-BSB instead of a B38M.

Re: AA213/214 MIA-BSB going from 752 to MAX8

An A321ULR would be a much better plane for this type of route. Perhaps laid out like the A321T's minus the First Class section. I accept the A321ULR as a potential intercontinental craft, but refuse to accept the 737MAX as one. Icelandair recently converted our MSP-KEF to a 737MAX. I'd rather just not......

I never flew BSB-MIA, but did take the 752 on ASU-MIA. A comfortable plane, all daylight trip. On the other hand, I rode on TAM (before LATAM) in a tightly configured A320 from GRU to BOG and it was possibly the most miserable flight of my life.....and that was only 2700 miles..

Is the AA MAX8 really as bad as everyone here make it out to be? Have flown on all other AA airplane types they have in the fleet, so what is the difference between the MAX8 and all other types?

Dramatics mostly, nothing new from the whiners who have taken over this site.
The lav sink is indeed small but no option on that for AA as we can see UA and DL also have that same lav. The seats are fine and the holder for your phone/tablet is actually pretty neat. I’m 6’2 and my knees didn’t touch the seat in front of me plus the overhead bins had a lot more space. The WiFi is supposedly top notch but all I did was stream the free online movies. Upgrades all around as far as I see it. Haven’t sat up front yet though.

I flew MIA-BSB about two years ago on the 757. The seats were comfortable but it was not one of the more pleasant flights I’ve ever taken. Let’s face it, economy is economy and you can’t stretch out and lie down for restful sleep. More still, the 757 at the time did NOT have any personal IFE, which for me makes overnights a challenge because I have difficultly sleeping upright and the IFE helps as a distraction—the 77W on the return GRU-DFW was more enjoyable despite its immovable arm rests. So from that perspective the 738MAX may be a measure of improvement.

As for a lesser premium product, that may be the result of G3 lowering yields, or AA “right-sizing” this markets. Though obviously the Brazilian capital, I’m willing to bet local high rollers take a short hop to GRU and take a LATAM or AA flight with it’s far superior premium offerings to wherever they’re going.

This is such a strange move. I know the 757’s are going away but this just doesn’t cut it. They’re restricting it to 139 passengers too. Max hold 172 at AA. No idea what’s behind this decision.

Really? What about a 25% trip cost savings?

I’m impressed that the 737 MAX 8 is capable of flying a route that’s at the limit of the 757’s capabilities, but in terms of onboard product this is a massive downgrade.

People on this forum made the 752 to be a lot more than it actually is. When it was replaced by a more capable A321NEO there was a lot of whining from the Boeing fans. It's no surprise that the MAX 8 is also more capable. anyone who ignored the 757 cheer squad already knew that. It was a beautiful bird in its day but it's the wrong tool for today's world.

AA has no interest in being a "premium" airline anymore. They would rather go for the ULCC customer.

You just described US Airways. Nothing has changed except for the livery on the outside.

AA213 lies close to my heart since it was my first trip to Brazil and personally I had always wanted to visit Brasília to see the unique Oscar Niemeyer architecture.
I've now done the trip four times, all 4 times in J and it felt interesting taking such a long trip in a narrow-body. Three times that I took the flight there were announcements at the gate regarding weight restrictions and that standby passengers may not have been allowed to board, although ultimately I believe that they were accommodated each time thanks to no shows.

The first three time I took the flight it was on the older angle-lie flat seats and on my last trip I was able to try out the new lie flat product which despite being a bit narrow, was definitely an improvement. Unfortunately the loads in J were never particularly high, hence why it's not a surprise that this is being downgraded.

Many of my friends in the Federal District are quite disappointed with the schedule change, particularly the 7AM departure. They are more receptive however to the arrival time in BSB which despite being later than ideal (midnight) allows people traveling to the capital to sleep in actual bed upon their arrival.

The new schedule is atrocious, but I guess I'm not surprised since there will be no more lie-flat seats.
