No idea, but my daughter Snapped me a pic this morning from South Seattle and it was pretty foggy.

Completely socked in for most of the morning. It's just now clearing.

Earlier this morning I was in a meeting on the 49th floor of a downtown building. We were above the fog, but it was dense enough that we couldn't see the ground. Felt a bit like we were cruising at altitude in a large building.

Fog was thick as stew this morning. I couldn't see two blocks away when I was out running errands, apparently it lasted quite a bit longer than usual. Will be checking on diversions for the day, but I know my dad's PSP-SEA flight (AS) had to make a pit stop in YKM.

Why not just divert to Paine Field instead of someplace like Moses Lake ? Perfectly clear there this morning.

Runway 16L/34R is closed and is being used as a taxiway due to repositioning of taxiway L to allow for sufficient clearance of taxiing aircraft once the North Satellite extension opens next year.

Do the other two runways not have CAT III ILS?

PSC/PDT/ALW have been socked in for days, so not surprised they didn’t get anything. My wife had a doctor appointment today in Walla Walla and it was terrible. Pendleton was reporting <500 RVR for the better part of the day. The fog came in over the weekend and isn’t supposed to lift until Thursday in Walla Walla.

16C and 16R do have CATIII but with the left side closed, things are a mess. They’re using 16R/34L for landing and the center for takeoff, so with the increased spacing required for CATIII it’s not surprising that things backed up and forced diversions in a hurry. Heck, even with all three runways open it’s still awful when the weather goes down at SEA. I’m so glad I get to fly in and out of SEA four times during my next work sequence.

Lack of room, crowded airspace. MWH has considerably more places to keep a 737 (or five) on ice for an hour compared to PAE. It's also not too far out of the way for anything that isn't coming from California or Alaska that needs a good runway.

Isn’t it pretty rare that SEA is socked in, but PAE is clear? I’ve seen a lot of fog at PAE lately and I’m not sure if SEA was as bad.

Yikes!

Seems all the ALW-SEA flights on Horizon's Dash-8's have been cancelled for days.

Has AS issued a travel waiver or anything of the sort?

It really depends, and it's not uncommon that the two airports have completely different weather. I drive past PAE every morning, but work near the water, which is a few hundred feet down in elevation (PAE is 608' MSL). There can be mornings when the fog is really low and PAE is clear, but it's socked in at my office. If the fog is a bit higher, my office can be clear. While SEA and PAE may have different weather patterns, it's also possible for the same weather to be in both places, in which case higher fog/clouds can sock in PAE but leave SEA clear (even if there's a low overcast, with good visibility below it), and low fog can sock in SEA, with PAE sticking out the top.

Bellingham was clear and sunny most of the day, clouded up a bit in the afternoon, but BLI seems underequipped to take a bunch of extra flights.

I live near PAE about halfway down between PAE and the water and often see the phenomenon you are referring to. The water is covered in fog, but it’s clear a few hundred feet up. You must work at the Mukilteo waterfront.

I’m surprised that BLI is used for diversions. I thought it was pretty small.

Where did AA divert to? In the interesting lists above, AA wasn’t mentioned.

Looks like GEG. 13 SEA-bound flights during the wx situation. PDX was surprisingly light on diversions from what I see.

According to flightaware, several planes did divert to PAE - here’s one:

Is this real ?

PAE did receive some diversions as well. Some AS customers were upset that there were no AS employees to help them onsite, but of course no one flies there just yet....

I’m surprised that BLI is used for diversions. I thought it was pretty small.

Where did AA divert to? In the interesting lists above, AA wasn’t mentioned.

The BLI diversions were all AS flights and BLI is an established AS station. I count 23 flights inbound to SEA that needed to land elsewhere today, it would make sense to spread them a across the PNW network if possible.

Didn't see any AA diversions today. I took a look at likely diversion airports for SEA and thought AA/UA would pop up, but they didn't. Might have been a gap in the weather, probably more likely that I overlooked something.

American Airlines had 3 diversions: 1 to PDX, 1 to PAE and 1 to RDM.

Looks like there's going to be rain at least the next three days as well. Might not affect air traffic, but traffic around the airport could turn into a mess, like it usually does this time of year.

Which PNW city received the most diverted flights?

Looks like GEG. 13 SEA-bound flights during the wx situation. PDX was surprisingly light on diversions from what I see.

PDX got the DL PEK flight DAL128
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /ZBAA/KPDX

Along with:
DAL2147 (LIH)
ASA860 (HNL)
DAL1768 (OGG)
DAL112 (KOA)
DAL3935 (RDM)
DAL3807 (SLC)

Pretty sure I missed some others, but Delta brought in 3 752's from Hawaii and the 763 from PEK.

The ILS is NA because 34R is closed.

It's odd there were no WN diversions shown. I wonder if there were higher mins for autoland, but the HGS CATIII wasn't impacted for some reason.

We landed there last week using just the HGS @ 700RVR.

Cargo diversions all went to PDX I believe. BFI was worse off than SEA and all UPS flights for the morning circled for a while and eventually went to PDX. FedEx 1885 from OAK also ended up at PDX, while other FX flights got in to SEA as the fog was clearing the first time - they just weren't able to leave as the fog settled back in after 0630 or so. Korean Air Cargo blocked out, got to the end of runway and had to return to blocks. Full ground stop for a couple of hours.

No NOTAMs for higher autoland mins that I’ve seen. I flew in and out of SEA a number of times last month and I never saw anything specifically reference it. I start a trip out of SEA tonight so I’ll see if anything has changed, but as far as I know autoland ops have been unaffected.

Marine forecast shows no fog today. Looking out on our inlet it is currently clear, but fog often does not start forming until 7 or 8AM - it has been ferocious these last several days.

No fog in central Seattle at the moment. The weather pattern has shifted and the inversion has cleared.
