Easyjet firms up more options for 320neo

BACK DELIVERIES
EasyJet firms more A320neos but pushes back deliveries

20 NOVEMBER, 2018 SOURCE: FLIGHT DASHBOARD BY: DAVID KAMINSKI-MORROW LONDON
UK budget carrier EasyJet has exercised purchase rights for another 17 Airbus A320neos, but is deferring the delivery of 18 of the type by up to two years.

The airline is also formally converting purchase rights for 25 A320neos into options – a switch which provides security on delivery slots in 2024.

EasyJet says the changes extend its fleet plans to 2023 while providing “more flexibility” in its capacity schedule.

The airline points out that Airbus has “limited availability” in its backlog, and that delivery slots – even those six years out – are “valuable”.

Its firmed orders are part of a broader agreement signed in 2013, which involved 135 Airbus jets and provides the airline with discounts.

EasyJet says the new deal with Airbus, unveiled during its full-year results presentation, gives it the flexibility to expand its fleet to 385 aircraft or reduce it to 316 by 2022.

Its fleet at the end of September stood at 315 aircraft – up from 279 at the end of the previous fiscal year – including the carrier’s first A321neos.

EasyJet took delivery of 49 aircraft over the financial year, and withdrew 13. The deliveries included 18 aircraft formerly operated by Air Berlin, which are being leased by the company, plus another 18 from Airbus.

Strange that there is no more 321 order conversions

I don’t think it’s strange that there are no further conversions from A320 to A321. easyJet only have 3 A321s at the moment, so their impact on the business will not yet be measured. There is plenty of time between now and the 27 remaining firm A321 deliveries to make decisions about more large aircraft. I suppose when you add Brexit uncertainty, it makes even more sense to wait before committing to more A321s.

The AIN article said 'The LCC also converted purchase rights for 25 A320neos into options to secure “valuable” delivery slots in 2024 “when the Airbus order book has limited availability.”' I thought it was interesting that there is already a scarcity of A320neo production slots in 2024 despite being 6 years away.

Hence the reason why Airbus is always keen on raising production rates.

Airbus must increase A321 production capability as typically the option to upgauge only requires about 30 months notice. So for 2024 production, they will tell Airbus in mid 2021. Note:. No source, just my opinion.

I would imagine Airbus is incentivising airlines to delay. Possibly discounted conversion of rights to options? Note:. I am speculating.

Ps also I see that emirates have joined worldwide by easyJet as well. If only they could upgrade this product to a proper connection would be so much better
