Great Story Behind the Famous Photo of the Concorde in it's Final Flight

Sun Nov 25, 2018 7:12 pm

The article includes the famous photo, and the story behind what the photographer had to do to get that iconic shot.

Article snip:

"High in the sky, dangling out of a helicopter and buffeted by icy winds, photographer Lewis Whyld managed to capture it on camera -- an image that has become the defining shot of the golden age of faster-than-the-speed-of-sound travel.
Whyld, who now works as an aerial cameraman for CNN, reveals how he took one of the coolest airplane photos ever taken."

I was not aware of any of this until seeing this posting. It's a wonderful backstory to the closing of a great chapter in commercial aviation. Thanks, 'bob75013' for finding this and posting it!

Had not seen it either and it's a cracker, as some would say.
Concorde would always make me look up while letting down into JFK as it flew over my house when I lived on Long Island's north shore. You knew by the noise, of course, but what a beauty!

Great story, though I've also never seen this photo before.

Would have been awesome to have flown it! Dare to dream
As of Dec 2018 I've flown 417,862 miles on 250 flights on 51 airplane types with 55 airlines traveling thru 97 airports in 43 countries. I've visited 59 countries. 2019 is looking like a pretty decent year for me.

Remember seeing this photo as a huge poster in a stairwell in one of the Airbus office buildings years ago - always thought it was a good one. Didn't realise it was the last picture of it flying! Now I've got more connections with the locality it means a bit more to me - I should probably save a copy...

As soon as I saw the photo I thought, "Ahh, that one!" - that's a really famous photo of Concorde and it was everywhere in 2003. A really excellent picture.

Great article too, it's actually far more detailed than I thought it would be. Thanks for posting about it!
I do enjoy a spot of flying, especially when it's not in economy!

A privileged lot we are to see Concorde like this

Mon Nov 26, 2018 3:17 pm

Because we are part of this hobby we get the privilege of seeing this picture over and over. A great moment in aviation. Shared all over the Earth. All those hours along fences, at open days, and other events with friends, whether we know them by name or not.

Yes, on both questions.

I was there at Filton that day, 26th November 2003. Miserable skies in one direction, blue skies in the other direction. I remember taking two photos and running out of film, I was at Cribbs Causeway so ran inside to buy some more and came out just as Alpha Fox was approaching the point at which the photo was taken. She flew abeam the airfield, out to the East and turn for her final approach. A sad day for what was a wonderful, pioneering aircraft in so many ways.

It's the cover shot on the Brian Trubshaw Concorde history book I bought shortly after the last flight. 15 years ago already, jeez oh !

I have long thought that the greatest picture of the Concorde was at IAD in the '70's when the AF and BA aircraft were nose to nose.

I think they re created that at JFK when flights were re-launched in 2001.

Although in my opinion, it has to be the photo of all 7 BA concordes lined up in formation.

Yes, I have seen this pic before. I think it was taken over Bristol or nearby... stunning pic.
