Looks like tsunami warning cancelled - but still, 6.6+ earthquake right in/near Anchorage can't be good

I see. Could Anchorage not fit in the title I wonder? I don't think 'Earthquake Anchorage' would be too long.

Not an airline link, but the link to the USGS who monitor it 13km N of Anchorage, so basically right on top... no wonder the tower was evacuated, there's going to be some damage for sure.

That feeling when you sit at the end of a runway, brakes are released and the raw power takes over. Now that is a thing of beauty and it never gets old.

The intersection of Minnesota and Int'l Airport. This is the main intersection in to the airport.

Ground stop -- Seems that they are accepting inbound arrivals and a few departures, mostly cargo jets. All commercial flights are suspended at the moment. No update on Alaskaair.com

That's crazy because I have been on that road before.

Anyways at the moment arrivals are on 7R and departures on 33L.

So when tower is evacuated does the airport become uncontrolled or does the departures and arrivals take over for the airport?

Well the approach control is in the tower at ANC so the only one who could take over would be ANC center and they are in anchorage as well.

AS87 and AS131 both turned around and appear to be headed back to SEA and PDX, respectively.

FAA website does not give an expected reopen time for ANC:

"Due to EARTHQUAKE, the Anchorage International Airport (ANC) was closed as of Nov 30 at 09:30 AM AKST. The date/time when the airport is expected to reopen is not known."

I don't think AS87 is going to make it back to SEA. Looks more like Juneau.

Flightradar24.com isn't showing any flights to ANC when filtering is turned on. Am I doing it wrong, or are all flights inbound already diverting?

Recordings at liveatc of the tower. FDX49 was on final approach and told to go around. ATC although obviously trying to recover from the scare was very professional.

I'm here to tell you, it was a doozy.
The worst I've ever experienced here.
But so far, no loss of life, and that's the most important thing.

The airport had a water line break above the main land-side lobby, so there was water shooting down from the 50 foot ceiling.
But it sounds like things are about the be back up and running. We've had several aftershocks, but nothing too major.

I'm headed in to work... somebody's gotta catch those planes!

Good luck to you. I spent about six months in Anchorage when my sister was based at Elmendorf. I miss Alaska greatly.

Glad you made it through unscathed. Be careful out there on the damaged roads

I was on United 1104 the red eye from ANC to DEN last night after spending a week there for work. Many friends and colleagues have serious home damage. The quake was deep, about 25 miles, but was located pretty much under the Joint Base there. There were a number of significant aftershocks.

I initially wondered if an 'I' had been missed out, as panic doesn't seem like an unreasonable reaction in a severe earthquake.

VAS was up with ATC pretty quick - https://youtu.be/o80cNJ_XhX0 - sounds like the folks in the tower did a sterling job given the circumstances.
Time for a new viewing deck at AKL!

We felt it up here in FAI, our building at the FAI airport swayed for a good minute and a half. The only diversion we got was a Northern Air Cargo 737-200 that was enroute OTZ-ANC when the earthquake happened. It stayed on the ground for maybe 4 hours and then headed down to ANC. In other news the Port of Anchorage seems to be operational, which is good news because that's how Alaska gets most food/supplies. And the road between ANC and FAI is passable, so no runs on the grocery stores here.

To be clear, that was only AS. IIRC both Era and Pen Air cancelled all ANC flighst that afternoon. UPS had an MD-11 from PVG go to FAI. I'm sure there were others diversions and cancellations..

Quickly reviving this thread, but I want to quickly recognize the Air Traffic Controllers, and Operations Teams at ANC for their ability to recover operations quickly and using pickup trucks to continue operations as smoothly as they can.

I tip my hat to everyone.
