emirates downsizing DXB-BKK-HKG

Sun Dec 02, 2018 5:28 pm

While it isn't huge news, the BKK-HKG leg of the route was one of the shortest and cheapest ways to fly Business or First on an A380.

Emirates from mid-January 2019 is reducing capacity on Dubai – Bangkok – Hong Kong route, currently served by 2-class A380 aircraft (selected dates served by 3-class). From 15JAN19, 2-class 777-300ER will operate this route on daily basis, replacing A380.

EK384 DXB0305 – 1205BKK1345 – 1740HKG 77W D
EK385 HKG2100 – 2315BKK0105+1 – 0500+1DXB 77W D

From 31MAR19, service will be operated by 3-class 777-300ER aircraft, however the 2-class A380 will temporary operate this route once again from 16APR19 to 30MAY19, DXB departure.

Smart move...cargo agents would welcome this the most and for pax the 427 seater dual class B77W is more than enough to operate this year round.

The incremental cargo revenue for this route can be quite big even on the 5th freedom bkk HKG bkk sector.

It would sure be nice if BOS got that plane. But for a whole host of reasons, they probably won’t.

How would this be a smart move? Does the 77W have a larger capacity for cargo than the A380?

Yes, it's a bit longer, and only has one decks' worth of passenger bags on board.

In fact, as per Emirates (http://www.skycargo.com/english/about-u ... t/?plane=1), the 77W can take almost three times the Cargo as well as a full Pax Load than a fully loaded 388 (23 tons in 132m3 versus 8 tons cargo capacity in 50m3)

Glad I took advantage while I could! It was my first time ever in business. The Lamb Biryani was fabulous, and I recall finding a half full bottle of champagne in the rest room. I was like, wow, they really spare no expense. lol

I’m honestly unsure why EK even flies the route. It’s great for lower yielding pax, but there are several nonstops between HKG and DXB including one that leaves HKG later and arrives in DXB fifteen minutes after EK385 that would attract higher yields.

Probably an utilization issue. EK doesn't want to have its planes sit on the ground for too long at BKK.

This is a good point. Interestingly, the aircraft sits in HKG for awhile assuming it isn’t switched out. I’ve flown EK385 from HKG to DXB and it makes sense as a BKK-DXB flight that arrives in DXB in the morning rush. They might make a fortune on HKG-BK: I think the ground agent told me that only a small fraction of pax, me included, were flying the entire route. Unlike the dreamers here on a.net, I was seated in Y.

Although HKGBKK is a bit low-yield, there are plenty of people flying between BKK and DXB.
I flow the route for several time and most of the passengers end their trip at BKK from both HKG and DXB.

Moreover, it help EK to direct most of their low yield HKGDXB ticket to EK385 and save more seats on the director HKGDXB flight for high yield traffic.

Correct. A 380 can carry max 4xPMCs of cargo, whereas a 77W can take as much as 14!! In fact it was r3cently reported that a 9W 77W into LHR carried 45ton on it. 23 ton is usually standard but with dense cargo the 77W really is like a freighter

I am pleasantly surprised :). You guys know your stuff. So the big A380 mama has her limits. Who would have guessed.

Plenty of room for freight on that sector with the 380 , pax loads dropping and crew restrictions driving the change

Haha yeah I work in industry. I know on the ME-AUS routes the 380s struggle to carry more than a 3ton on the flight!!!

This is Airliners Fatty, information in the form of facts never stands in the way of ignorance and flight-sim expertise, sadly it appears that many on here refuse to accept that EK is drowning in a mess of its own making.
